Metal Gear Solid VR Challenge
Archive: 36 posts
Metal Gear Solid VR Challenge is a level I've been working on for a while now. It's heavily based on the official Metal Gear Solid Act 2: VR Training level, and that was done purposefully. I fell in love with that level's design, so I recreated it based solely on playthroughs and screenshots. I think you'll find it's fairly accurate. It's simple and short in terms of gameplay, but I worked hard on refining it and making sure each piece worked well and was accurate. Not only that, if you complete a challenge I propose in the level (play it to find out), you'll receive a LBPCentral logo that you can slap on at the start (much like the actual VR Training level) which will enable Race Mode. In this mode, you will be able to collect each piece that I recreated (Level Start, Codec Room, Basic Training Room, Wooshing Door, etc) so you can use them down in your own levels. Each piece functions as you'd expect (the door will open when sackboy gets close, the codec will ring followed by text from a hidden magic mouth at the appropriate point, etc). If that weren't enough, you'll also earn access to a copyable version of my level, so you can pick it apart, take parts that you want without the normal limitations, and better learn how to mimic the design. And, before you ask, yes, each piece was made from scratch. Here's some screenshots: http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/7676/aphotozy8.jpg http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/7826/aphoto1lt6.jpg http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/4823/aphoto2of4.jpg http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/3531/aphoto3hh4.jpg http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/2208/aphoto4iz1.jpg http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2566/aphoto5rv0.jpg Now go play it! | 2008-12-30 09:55:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
A lot of VR levels these days. I'll have a look later, it looks pretty good. | 2008-12-30 10:04:00 Author: Killian Posts: 2575 |
Looks pretty cool from what I can see. I'll have a nosey. | 2008-12-30 11:43:00 Author: Dynashock Posts: 69 |
Tried it earlier. It was actually pretty good. The 'Red Panel' hint was well done, too, though you could've done with a double-life checkpoint before that part. | 2008-12-30 13:07:00 Author: LFF Posts: 434 |

I went ahead and added that in. Anyone else try it? What did you think? | 2008-12-30 19:07:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
I gave it a try earlier today. The looks of the level were very well done, and as for the gameplay; can't complain about it. The moving red panels was the only hard part but very do-able. I also like the fact that you have a reason to come back to the level. Getting the required sticker for that was slightly annoying though, I barely got it, but I don't think you should change it, as you can get it done, if you just try hard enough. The only point of complaint is the length! I'd love to see more. | 2008-12-30 19:19:00 Author: Dynashock Posts: 69 |
I'll try it soon - would be good to see how you did it so I could finally make something half decent . Looks great though from the screenshots, fell in love with the MGS textures as soon as I found them! | 2008-12-30 19:29:00 Author: gripper92 Posts: 38 |

I'll do a more proper level in the future, I think, but this was just to display the different possibilities with the stuff I give out in the level. | 2008-12-30 19:50:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
Yea, finally managed to get that sticker Me and my bro are #1 on leaderboards. Nice level, maybe make it a bit longer and add a level aced gift? | 2008-12-30 19:50:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |
I just got the Share trophy playing this. Oh, and the #1 score. Nice job with it. It looks just like the MM levels and plays well. | 2008-12-30 21:01:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
I've played it and i can tell you that its alot better than most of the higher played levels. Good job man | 2008-12-30 21:07:00 Author: lordflash11 Posts: 194 |

Yeah well done CC. Simple and fun and really went well with the MSG pack. Apparently we got some snipers here on lbpc cause I thought I did decent and promptly got 4th or 5th hah! Good job promoting the site as well! | 2008-12-30 21:23:00 Author: Neverynnal Posts: 374 |
The challenges you made out of the theme were really quite fun, especially the red block room. A little bit short, wish you'd have done more. I don't necessarily enjoy seeing a straight rip of Act 2, but I definitely admire how close you came to recreating it. That shows a definite level of skill. I'd go far enough to say that the red block room should be in the official Act 2 because of how unique an application of paintinator control it is. | 2008-12-30 22:05:00 Author: Unknown User |

Ah, well, even though I ripped the design, it really taught me a lot about how Media Molecule designs levels. They pick a palette of materials, and they stick with those materials. They also seem to work their hardest to simplify how different events play out, so it weighs less on the thermometer. There's about 2/3rds free space in the thermometer in my level, and it's mainly due to the way Mm designs theirs. It was really quite interesting. Glad to see you guys like it, and I hope I'll be able to see some levels made with this as well. If not, that's alright; I still learned a ton from this. | 2008-12-31 01:25:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
amazing level EDIT: Ok here's some real feedback. Two things are really great in this level, the first being the design (although not original) and the second is the red block room. Besides that, if you strip down what is actually happen, all this could fit in the first 5 seconds of a normal level. Perhaps you could make the rooms bigger and include more obstacles inside? Expand on the MGS level design. You are obviously incredibly talented, it's a shame the levels fill so fast. I'm not sure how I feel about your level, on one hand it recreates one of the best LBP experiences... but on the other hand there just isn't much to do and I feel like you had to cut it short...and that takes away from the epicness. Gameplay: 7/10 Polished but easy, without the red block room there really isn't much in way of expanding the MGS gameplay. Design: 10/10 Flawless Overall 8/10. Awesome looking, polished, too short, and not as satisfying as it should be. I'm really excited to see your next level with this level-set though. | 2008-12-31 02:41:00 Author: Snowspot Posts: 265 |
Hey CC. I tried this las night and it was pretty fun. I have to agree with pretty much everything Ninja wrote and that includes praise for the red platforms puzzle, very cool and very clever. One of the things MM was was making a point of was how you would be able to recreate any of the story levels using the in-game tools. You are the first person I have actually seen do it so kudos for that. A fun but short level, everyone should check it out | 2008-12-31 06:19:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
I am posting to update the Feedback for Feedback addition. As you can see, it's a bright color right before the actual thread title, to make it more prominent. It is an actual offering of F4F, so go ahead and trade feedback with me if you'd like. | 2008-12-31 20:05:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
So if i give REAL and USEFUL feedback, then you give me feedback (according to the F4F system) | 2008-12-31 21:55:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
This was a really good VR training level. It felt like a sequel to the official level, because the challenges were harder. I am amazed by how you got it to look exactly like the official one, it looks really good. The only things I think that could be improved are two small problems. The first being that the score board at the end could be decorated to look like the ones in the MGS pack, they looked really neat I think. The other problem is that it is too short, I was enjoying the harder challenges, and then it was over. So, it could definitely use one more challenge, maybe something similar spinning turret creature from the official level where you have to shoot its brains. | 2008-12-31 21:58:00 Author: Walter-Kovacs Posts: 542 |
I'm willing to do 5 F4Fs. Walter provided the first, so I'll do 4 more. This was a really good VR training level. It felt like a sequel to the official level, because the challenges were harder. I'm also aware of the short length, but I don't plan on lengthening it at the moment because it was meant as an example level more than anything. I'm pretty happy with it, I guess. Which level would you like me to provide feedback for? | 2008-12-31 22:45:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
You can leave feed back on either level in my sig, I guess Keep Up! is the newer one so, do that one. I linked my sig to the threads so you don't have to dig them up. Edit: oh no, you quoted my bad grammar before I fixed it | 2008-12-31 22:47:00 Author: Walter-Kovacs Posts: 542 |

I've got an idea for a level with this design; it'll be a proper level with a story and more. It took me a week to get this level done, so expect a week or two's wait time before I am ready to show it. I'll go leave feedback on one of your levels. | 2009-01-01 01:14:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
Hey CC, I played this level a couple of days ago and never got to leave feedback on it. This was the first level I played with the Paintinator and the MGS materials (I just got my PS3 back two days ago), so maybe everything was a bit overwhelming, but I thought it was a great and fun level. Then I played the actual VR Training level from MM... Wow. It was almost exactly like your one, so props to you for that. It must of taken a long time. Overall, a fun level that puts the MGS materials and objects to great use. 5 stars and hearted | 2009-01-01 10:25:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hmm.. I'm kind of shocked that it took 1/3 of the thermometer, because, as was already said, it is quite short. Your design really looks almost exactly like MM's, I just felt that something was missing in the rooms, though I don't know what. It was fun to play, but it ended right when I thought it would get bigger. Seeing as it was kind of a "test level", you probably didn't intend to make it longer anyway, so I'll look forward to your next one. The red block room was nice, but I feel you should have 2 or 3 "chances" hitting a red block before getting vaporized. I'm wondering how you did that vaporizing, but I'm guessing it's gas to piston, or is it an emitter? Because I used that with piston in my level too, but can't test it yet until the 1.07 bug is fixed and it's feels quite nice to just disappear on the spot like in your level xD. You might want to fix one little thing in that room: You can hit the first blocks from outside the room and you won't die if you hit the red blocks. Maybe expand the gas to the sides a little (if you used gas that is)? Also I found getting the sticker pretty easy by "vibrating" a finger on R1, but maybe it's just me. ____ If you feel like this was useful feedback and want to return it; the only level I have up to give feedback to right now is a switch level, so I hope it's not a hassle to go through all the explanations. It seems like you can use switches pretty well anyway. But who knows maybe you'll find something new. I'd still like to play your Switch Library, but it's never been accessible. | 2009-01-01 14:27:00 Author: Shiwayari Posts: 167 |

Yeah, I had a pretty awesome switch level, but I had to give up creating it because nobody could load the level. I still have them up for anyone to grab, but they aren't explained and could be pretty difficult to figure out otherwise. In any case, I'd be glad to check out your level. I love logic switches, and I'm curious to see what you've done. | 2009-01-01 20:23:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

Thanks guys for the replies. Just to let you know, I'm at work on a new VR level with a storyline and more. It's much more expansive and detailed, but still true to the design of all of the MGS levels it is related to (hint). I can't say when it will be ready, but I spend a few hours a day building. Hopefully in a couple of weeks. | 2009-01-09 00:40:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

Hopefully in a couple of weeks. Just finished playing, will have to agree with most of the previous posts. It is very close to MM levels look and feel and that is impressive... I enjoyed it as much as if not more than their training level... mainly because of the part with the red panels and avoiding shooting those, thought that was great. Also have to agree it was pretty short... but its good to hear you're making more. I look forward to playing the next one. | 2009-01-09 00:54:00 Author: Doctor Ramatool Posts: 189 |

Wow, talk about raising the dead! I'm going to go ahead and lock this - as for the other "in-progress" level, it's still on My Moon, but I haven't had any time to work on it. | 2009-06-02 04:33:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
