Breaking (Sort of) new ground here, Need some opinions. :)

Hey guys, due to the recent great feedback I've gotten on Vinewood Swamp, I've started a bit of a project on my moon this morning.
Basically, it's still a platformer at heart, but it encourages the player to look around their surroundings and explore to find a way to the next area. No obvious rope swings, no large buttons, no bounce pads, no power ups, nothing but pure evaluation of the surrounding environment and platforming, this type of level also lets me zero in on my visual skills and go as overboard as I'd like.

SO, what I suppose I'm getting at here is, I'd like all of your opinions on the concept/visual style of the level so far. I've only started on the beginning checkpoint are and this is the bare bones of the project, but it's still something.

This is the first time I've tried to PURPOSELY make things less obvious, so if any at all, tips on how to do this properly would be great.

So... opinions?

It's a bit hard to comment on this without pictures... :S
Anyway, I'm not really a big fan of flashy levels, I like nice simple designs. Neither do I like confusing levels that involve you staying in one place forever trying to figure out how to advance to the next stage.
But these are only my personal opinions so take them as a pinch of salt, many people are bound to like the sort of level you're going for.

My tip is to get lots of friends to play it before you publish it; have them give you their honest opinions and tweak it based on them.

One more thing, visuals are nothing without gameplay. It might look beautiful, but if it's not fun, all you'll get is .

Yeah, I'm well aware of that as well. I'll be sure to add tons of gameplay in there, but it just wont be as obvious as say, a sponge on a rope or a bounce pad. I'll get some pictures up now 2012-02-05 22:56:00

Looking fabulous. The design looks great, and if you could apply the idea of player instinct into the level, that would be fantastic. It's basically making the player give something into a level, and it's a more rewarding experience overall. The only thing that springs to mind is, how obscure will the solutions be? Is there a difficulty spike with the obviousness of the correct path? Which leads to, if finding the correct solution is too difficult, will there be hints? I mean, personally, I love finding things out for myself. I just know a lot of people who give up easily when the answers aren't given to them on a silver platter, haha.

Despite that, this looks really good and I can't wait to hear of any more progress on it. Keep up the good work!

I plan on including a hint sticker or something for a fee of score bubbles if needed. And the level of difficulty gets a slight bit more difficult, but also increases the amount of obstacles players will need to overcome as the level continues.
(Currently, the storyline is that miners have been trapped in the ice cave without food and water, and you need to rescue them with minimal equipment) *So the further you delve into the cave, the thicker the obstacle areas become*
I'm also thinking of adding my own scoring grade system based on how well you complete the level and how many bubbles you collect.Thank you both for the opinons

This level looks stunning to say the least. I quite like the idea of walking around trying to find out how to advance through the level. I can't wait to play this as it looks like a very interesting idea.2012-02-06 21:10:00
