Theories on Arkham 3?

Archive: 10 posts

With the success of Arkham Asylum and the recent Arkham City, it’s obvious that Rocksteady isn’t gonna end this fantastic franchise. There are many loose ends at the end of Arkham City, which I would like to touch on. I may be a little fuzzy on some of the details, because I don’t have access right now, and it’s been a while since I finished the side missions, stories, etc.

As revealed by either an Arkham City Story or character bio, Thomas Elliot, Aka Hush was a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. But Elliot wanted independence and wealth. So he cut the brakes on his parent’s car. The crash killed his father, and almost his mother too. But Bruce’s father Thomas Wayne performed an emergency surgery, saving her. This enraged Elliot, who plotted for revenge against Bruce.
In Arkham City, he’s been killing people, and cutting off their faces. At the end of the mission, it is revealed he is doing this to make his face look like Bruce Wayne, in an attempt to exact revenge by ruining Bruce’s reputation. Batman has Oracle switch over all the info, and tells her that he’s leaving Arkham City(or was it Gotham itself?), and will catch up to Hush later. This means, I think, that at some point, Batman is leaving Arkham City or Gotham.

A mysterious figure, named Azrael, who is with the Sacred court of St Dumas has been watching Batman for a while
*Easter Egg- You can see Azrael watching you from the rooftops as you are entering Arkham City.*
Azrael claims that Batman can close the gates to hell, but in doing so, Gotham will burn, and events will happen that he cannot stop. Who knows what this could be, but one thing is for certain...it can’t be good.
As a side note, in the comics, Azrael filled in as Batman when Bruce had his back broken by Bane. This turned sour when Azrael’s training influenced him to let villains die. Could this happen in Arkham 3? Batman falls to Bane(again) like in the comics, and Azrael fills in?

That’s all I have to say on side missions. Feel free to add anything.

Easter Eggs:

I’ll start with the shorter text easter egg

At any point in the game, in Harley’s office (the place you break into with the crane hook) to the left of her outfit from Arkham Asylum, on the floor, is the Fruitful Endeavors Pregnancy Test. And the test. Is. Positive. Now, Harley loves her Mr. J. She wouldn’t cheat. So it must be her and Joker’s baby. How far along she is is unknown. But she is.

At first, you might think Scarecrow isn’t in the game. That’s reasonable enough, he got dragged away by Killer Croc in the first game. (More on Croc later on) But there’s a Riddler Riddle which you have to solve by finding Scarecrow’s mask (on top of that tall platform in Amusement Mile, close to the Industrial District.) You think, oh, maybe it surfaced, and someone put it there, the wind caught it, whatever.
But then there is the boat. The Falcone Shipping boat near where you enter the warehouse to find Nora. It doesn’t give you a prompt that you can hack it, but if you stand near the crate, and use your Cryptographic Sequencer, you will begin the hacking sequence. There are many possibilities that you can use, but only one worked for me. The password? CITYOFTERROR. A hatch will open, and you can climb down a ladder. You then go into that haunting first person mode, when you’re in the boat. You’ll see a thug at the end, and on the sides..........containers of cockroaches. Near the thug, you’ll see a shipping order to Johnathan Crane (The Scarecrow) about the cockroaches, and a quip that the other (I wanna say 15) shipments are expected soon. If you get close enough to the thug, he freaks out, and dies. Or seems to die. I don’t think you can use detective mode to check.
If you aren’t hacking a console with the Cryptographic Sequencer, you can tune radio frequencies. This is used to listen in on Penguin, Tyger, the Riddler, etc. But if you move around randomly, you’ll find some stations you can’t tune, just saying random numbers. But when decoded using god knows what ciphers, you’ll get messages like “You’ll pay for what you have done to me!” etc. Now, some of these can be heard only after the main story is completed. Maybe some of these are Joker? But some are available before Joker dies. I feel that all these point to Scarecrow still being alive. Still not convinced? How about this. While Protocol 10 is being carried out, near Maxie Zeus’ Olympian or whatever, there is a building with two levels, a staircase linking the levels. On the upper is a single Joker thug. On the lower level, there’s two thugs. It’s varied with me, but at least one of them is dressed up as what seems to be a Scarecrow thug. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r50/Mach_9/crow2.jpg
There are more of these thugs in various areas there in Amusement Mile, and I think I found one in Park Row or the Bowery.
Could Scarecrow have hired or threatened people into working for him while he’s recuperating from the Croc attack? What’s he planning? Could he be responsible for Gotham burning?

Killer Croc himself very briefly appears throughout the entire game. The one encounter is after you defeat Ra’s Al Ghul. If you go towards the room with the waterfalls, and grapple up, you’ll be in a three way intersection. Remote Control Batarang through the bars in front of you, and hit the button. You’ll be treated with a short cutscene. Croc says you smell of death, and he needs not to fight you (which is why he doesn’t just break through the bars?) and that he will feed on your corpse. He swims away. There is also the Riddle for you to solve, in which you find Croc’s hideaway. Pictures of him, a bed, and HIS COLLAR are in this room. If he can’t be shocked like in Asylum, how will he be stopped if he returns in Arkham 3? He can’t just be shocked into submission...

He fell into the Lazarus Pit! I thought he was a great boss(2nd favorite only to Mr. Freeze), and would love to see him back in Arkham 3.

Wouldn’t his assassins go and get him and take him to the Lazarus Pit? If you go back to the place he landed when the tower blew, he’s not there. What if they didn’t get him back there until after the Clayface battle? How is Clayface going to affect the Pit? Will he emerge and be immortal? (Is he immortal anyway?) Or will Clayface dissolve into the Lazarus Pit and give the users his powers ?
Is Ra's going to be responsible for “Making Gotham burn?”

I LOVED Strange. His voice actor was perfect. I would love to see his voice used again in Arkham 3, maybe in Scarecrow hallucinations?

After you retrieve her loot, says she isn’t going to leave Arkham City. “Where’s the fun in that?” SO I can see her as a playable character in Arkham 3. Alongside Robin (probably. Also, I’d love to see more of him if he can’t be played as in Arkham 3.) And Nightwing. With the DLC for Arkham City, I think it’s a sign that they might be playable in Arkham 3.

Well, that’s all I have to say. Please enlighten me if I’ve forgotten anything, or give me updates on details, and your own opinions. Thank you for reading!

Anyone who missed any easter eggs should read this thread. I knew most of them already but really didn't notice the scarecrow thugs. This series has great easter eggs, especially Sharp's hidden room in Arkham Asylum (which is referenced in one of Catwoman's Arkham City Stories) and Falcone's boat in Arkham City. The riddles could themselves be a huge selection of easter eggs sprinkled thoughout the map, if they weren't part of the experience. I really love them, they make this series come alive and as close as the Batman universe as possible.

What I didn't like was Robin's appearance. He should have had more relevance. They went through the trouble of modeling him, giving him a voice actor, making him 1000 more awesome than in the comics, and he appears in just 1 cutscene? It was basically fan service.

About the main antagonists in the next game, my bets are on Hush and Black Mask.
I think the Joker's really dead. At least I hope so. I don't think they'd want this game series to be like most superhero comics in which the heroes save the day and instead of just killing the villains to ensure no more people get murdered they lock them up again, so they can escape the next week. It's just stupid how comics writers can't decide when enough is enough and move on to new characters. I don't think Rocksteady wants to mirror that aspect of the comics. They'd lose much of the respect I have for them if they come up with something as low as "j/k Bats, I'm actually alive"

Besides, the game subtly touches on a point that I'd like them to develop in the next Batman game (if they make one). During one of his calls, the Joker says Batman needs him as much as he needs Batman. They were locked in an eternal struggle. Just as wrecking chaos was Joker's life, crime-fighting is Batman's, he can't live without it. The Joker knew that, that's why he claimed he truly understood Batman better than anyone else. That's why Batman (pretty obviously) felt guilty about Joker dying, and that's a plot point we never get to see in the comics because the writers just refuse to let go of the Joker.

Also you forgot a curious little detail. When you first play as Catwoman and go steal the stuff in that vault, the painting covering the vault shows Cain carrying his dead brother Abel. Notice how closely it resembles Batman carrying Joker in the ending cutscene.

The next installment of the series is going to be:

That's right! I forgot about Black Mask! I would love to see the Falcones and/or Black Mask. I think if you were to take down a Falcone, then it would be a cutscene boss, like Strange.
Also, yes, I forgot about the Cain and Abel reference.

I think I'll agree with SnipySev in that I believe Joker's gone for good, at least if Paul Dini and the rest of the developers really want to take this portrayal of Batman in the ambitious direction I think they are.

Given that they flew in the face of Joker's usual expected contractual immunity to reprecusions it might be interesting to play around with expectations and give other villains alternative portrayals as well. I'd like to see Scarecrow return as well, though not if he's just going to serve the same boogie man role as in the first which might feel too much like more of the same. The developers could raise the stakes and have him hatch some plot to spread a city-wide dose of fear toxin a la "Batman Begins" though it might be more interesting if he went on a reign of terror using purely psychological means (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/3273059.html?#cutid1).

In regards to Ra's al Ghul, there are Lazarus Pits scattered throughout the world so even if the one in Gotham has been rendered unusable the League of Assassins could easily spirit his body away to another one though Ra's himself said that the Pits only temporarily extend one's life but can't grant true immortality and he himself is reaching the limit of how much the Pits can delay his own inevitable death. Although in the comics and animated series he did get around this by having his mind transferred into someone else's body with blood relatives being the ideal candidates. Just what did happen to Talia's body by the end of the game anyway, hm? On the other hand, if he did use the Lazarus Pit that Clayface fell into it might be interesting if Ra's was transformed into some freakish clay monster hybrid.

Personally, I'm not sure Hush will be the main villain of the next game partially because Dini himself tends to portray Hush in the comics as someone who despite his close personal connection to and deep grudge with Batman is someone so completely consumed by envy and who always bites off more then he can chew as a result. He may have Bruce's face now and he'll likely use that to his advantage like he did in the comics, but even in that case it ended up very badly for him. At best, I think he's better serving a role similar to Strange, being someone who seems like the main villain but is ultimately falls short and is overshadowed by others.

As for who I'd like to see as the main villain(s) of the next game I've got four words: The Court of Owls (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/3445102.html?#cutid1). They're relatively new to the comics but they've been really interesting so far and could make great villains in the third game for a number of reasons. Their backstory stretches into the annuls of Gotham's history which from a gameplay standpoint could continue the theme of Batman uncovering the history of the games' settings a la "The Spirit of Arkham" and "Arkham City Stories" of the previous game. Their assassin, the Talon would also make an interesting antagonist in that he could invert Batman's "Invisible Predator" role and be someone who stalks and preys on him instead, and the Court's labyrinth (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/3561766.html?#cutid1) could serve as a successor to the psychological horror-themed segments of the previous games. Also, consider that by the end of the second game Arkham City is getting ready to be shut down but both Arkham Asylum and Blackgate are still in ruins, the major gangs of Gotham have either fled the city or have been decimated by their turf wars between each other, Batman himself and Protocol 10, add to that the Mayor being in all likelihood removed from office and his administration being disgraced and you've got a Gotham that will likely be in a very unstable state with a huge power vacuum just ready for someone to step in, and who better then those who have been watching and waiting in secret all along under everyone's nose?

I'd also like to see the Batcave return, or rather the one under Wayne Manor and maybe the Manor itself as a real area and not just a DLC map. Not only that but have Alfred and Oracle to make actual physical appearances and not just be voices over a radio, for Robin and Nightwing to have genuinely meaningful roles, and having either the Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown versions of Batgirl show up would draw fans in like iron dust to an electromagnet. Would also be nice for Catwoman to return as well if they'd be willing to expand her relationship with Batman but personally I'd tone down the fanservice and not just with her but in general because as good as Arkham Asylum and City were, the fanservice in regards to the female characters felt really gratuitous.

And the female characters could do with a little less oversexualization. Either that or the zipper on Catwoman's suit just got stuck

If they're going for a mature version of the Batman universe they should choose less objectifying outfits for the ladies. Nothing wrong with portraying them as sexy but come on, it's freaking snowing in Arkham City. Harley, Ivy and Catwoman would have caught a hell of a cold going around dressed like that even if it wasn't snowing. If they toned it down a bit we wouldn't feel like we're playing something aimed at 14 year old boys.

But then again, they drew inspiration from DC and those guys aren't very good at setting mature examples. The hole in Power Girl's suit that serves no other purpose beyond showing cleavage (and goes against all basic rules of aerodynamics ) is a constant reminder of the demografic they want to appeal to.

These are all great theories and ideas everyone! That Scarecrow link scared the crap out of me! I think that could fit in well. Remember, the password for the boat IS City of Terror. I think that's a great tie in. I can really see Crane doing that. Keep the ideas and theories coming!
