Suggested game "research" for LBP enemies

Archive: 11 posts

Hey gang,

So I'm working on a group of levels that's basically an homage (i.e. not exact copies but alluding) to several different games that I've played when I was younger... but I have one problem.

I forgot what those games were.

So here I am, approaching to ask the aid of some of the brightest and most talented people in these parts ... what 2D games of yore had some of the most creative and crazy 2D enemies? If you can cite their exact game or even a screen shot like what their attack patterns, etc that would be wonderful too.

An alternative suggestion would be good LBP levels that have had some great enemy creatures as well.

Before I draw much ire from the community, I'm trying to find these mainly because I'm curious if I can make them in LBP (and of course get an excuse to play some old games)!

Thanks in advance!

I'll go ahead and suggest Metroid.

Ahh, I didn't play too many 2D games but one that comes to my mind would be Dr. Eggman from Sonic The Hedgehog 1&2 2008-12-30 16:43:00

Try the Castelvania series. There were many interesting elements in those games, and most of the bosses were based on being able to cleverly time your movement while looking out for visual cues of what might happen next.2008-12-31 20:08:00

I don't understand this thread. Do you already own all these games, or can get access to them legally?

If you already own them, why are you asking us? I just don't understand...

It's more of a question of what kind of enemies people remember that were reasonably challenging back in the golden days of gaming that would work well as LBP enemies or derivatives thereof.

My NES is at my parents' house and considering that there's about 7295 miles of water in between, I can safely say that I won't be able to access my NES anytime soon.

Therefore, I'm relying on people's memories to suggest what kind of memorable and creative enemies they've seen in the NES era and somehow figure out how to make them "work" and what was its purpose (i.e. to push the player back, to give them damage, to force them to take an alternate path, etc).

Ah, that makes more sense... but if I could clarify, are you trying to get people to remember famous generic guys, boss fights, or entire themes and games?

For me, and I have been gaming for a long time, memorable mobs are not necessarily because of a certain game mechanic, but rather because of the influence they have on the overall story. If there is something that needs to be killed by stomping on it's head, I'll do that and then forget about the entire thing.

But it's the ones that impact the overall story that are the ones that are memorable to me. Why is it here? Why am I fighting it? What difference does it make? Something with a back story is always far more interesting and ultimately satisfying to me.

It could very well be the bosses and/or the generic bad guys. Let me give you an example:

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Bowser jumps up in the air and drops down and spits fireballs. Everytime he jumps up and drops down, he deforms the environment. What this does is that it makes it a little bit more difficult for Mario to traverse the terrain and makes him jump a lot more in order to reach safer ground. Also, Bowser's fireballs have a set path, so Mario will have to be careful to jump and dodge these. Bowser's weakness is what makes Mario's job difficult - the terrain. If Bowser keeps breaking the terrain down, he'll eventually have a hole that he'll fall through, thus making Mario win the fight.

So I'm really more interested in these kind of mechanical type battles as opposed to storyline elements - though story always helps people enjoy the level .
