Getting frustrated with lbp2?
Archive: 13 posts
When i first started playing lbp2 i made an abandoned house level, i hardly knew how to use any of the new tools coming from lbp1, but i was eager to make a level. So i published it and i got over 1,500 views in the first day, and thats when i got hooked on lbp2. Looking back, i dont think i should have been on cool pages, because the level was terrible, now that i know all the tools i can see that it wasnt as great as i thought it was. My next couple of levels all got over 2,000 plays or got the amount that they deserved. Unfortunatley now that i feel that I know all the tools, and that my levels are actually good enough to be on cool levels, they hardly get plays at all. I try lucky dipping, and asking ppl to play my levels but its really time consuming. I think it would be amazing if there was a cool pages moderator, someone that could handpick levels, like an mm pick. Im not a poor sport, but you know if im putting in hours, into making levels only to get a few plays I might as well stop playing. Right now on cool pages, theres about 3 mortal kombat lvls with stupid bots that some guy copied, probably took him an hour to make and is now getting over 15k plays for. http://lbp.me/search?q=beefpatty22 -> if you care | 2012-01-31 03:47:00 Author: lilballer22 Posts: 63 |
Hey there, Unfortunatlly the same story isn't just for yourself, but for numourous creators out there, many being some friends of mine. There are several reasons for this, some may or may not appeal to you, but there's also some ways to get onto the cool pages easier too: Firstly, getting plays now is harder than ever, even some of the most experienced and well known creators are struggling to push 500 plays, like Alley_Cat_8633 and L1ghtmare. Fact is, there used to be 30'000 - 40'000 people online when this game came out, now there's barely 10'000, and the majority of them are the ones filling the cool pages with all the copied levels and H4H levels. The majority of the community are kids, alot of kids enjoy this game, and have a much differ taste to the creators who spend months on a platformer, some may prefer "funny" fart joke movies or hide and seek houses, few appreciate platformers nowa'days. You can get plays a bit easier, few tips how to: -There's a trick Christiandadrum taught me to remain high on the newest levels and bring in some extra plays. If you copy your level to a second slot on your moon, having two, then editing on slightly different, say place a peice of dark matter somewhere, save and change the description a little, if you publish one, then the second, your publishing the same level, but your always highest on the newest levels page. Recomended to do this for about an hour, to make sure you get some plays. -Dive in is a good idea, sure, though asking some of your favourite creators on their profile is often more effective. Obviously don't go around spamming everyone to play, i don't go around asking people like Steve-big-guns or Muddledmuppet because i don't value their opinions, i ask friends like Legoloco, Jocko99, Felkroth etc.. People's who's opinions matter to me, bare that in mind. -Asking your friends. Yeah, a simple message to all your friends on your list, simply asking them to spend 5minutes of their time to play your level is harmless. Most should play it if their free, if they don't, are they really your friends? hm.. Give it a shot -Publish on Friday-Saturday's, about 6pm GMT +0. People come home from work, kids are off school and people will be on LBP most at this time. Main thing is to have fun, sure you want your work to be appreciated, and it will be, in time. The more you publish, the better known you'll become. This won't happen over night, just don't get down about it. You have the support of your friends and hearters, keep improving and enjoy yourself. It's not the amount of plays you get, it's the amount of people of the people who played your level that Yay'ed your level that matters, and the reviews. Read reviews and improve from them! Hope this helps, Good luck! RC | 2012-01-31 11:59:00 Author: Unknown User |
but you know if im putting in hours, into making levels Hours? Try months. Most good levels take weeks to months to make. My 2 best levels took several months to make, and I've not gotten more than 40 plays on any one level. EDIT: My mistake...VR Shooting Gallery now has 41 =) | 2012-01-31 12:04:00 Author: Brannayen Posts: 438 |
He's right, should have picked up on that myself actually. An average level from any creator will take at least 100 hours, other a period of a month or so, where as some can take up to 300 hours other months and months. Generally, the thing i say is don't aim to please anyone else, aim to please yourself. If your happy with your level, then chances are others will be too. Have fun, it's a game | 2012-01-31 12:13:00 Author: Unknown User |

EDIT: My mistake...VR Shooting Gallery now has 41 =) Same here! The level I'm currently doing was only supposed to be a mini side-task. How wrong I was! I thought I could get it done in a couple of weeks...... I overestimate my ability! | 2012-01-31 12:13:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Thanks for the feedback I really liked all your points, but i meant to say that my levels took weeks, though my levels are normally made up of sackbots that i have been working on since i started lbp2. I keep them and tweak them towards the level that I am making. And you would be surprised what I can do in a couple of hours. Im pretty sure i would have gotten that achievement for 1440 minutes in create mode more than twice, I create alot. But i do applaud you, as I would probably never spend more than a month on a level. But I dont publish crap, I try not to waste people's time. I've seen many levels where I think to myself, "wtf is this crap?" My levels all have a good like to dislike ratio and have a good amount of time put into them. | 2012-01-31 18:14:00 Author: lilballer22 Posts: 63 |
1000 plays sounds quite nice. | 2012-01-31 18:23:00 Author: Darkcloudrepeat Posts: 606 |
here's also some advice. Look at the avatar area of each person who posted here. What do you see? LBP.me information. Edit your profile to display your LBP.me info, I believe you need to set your privacy settings ingame as well, to display information on the web. I'm constantly clicking on someones LBP.me info. If you don't have it displayed, I'm not going to LBP.me and doing a search. Also, consider making a cool level signature that links to your LBP.me page. Here's another thing. Networking. You've been here since September of 2011, yet made only 46 post. Over the last 2 or 3 days, I probably posted that many times. Jump into discussions, get to know people, use the F4F system in the showcase area. It takes a lot of work to get plays now, because as Racing creed said, there just isn't that many people playing anymore. | 2012-01-31 19:30:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
Thats a very good point ill try to set that up now. I mainly just made posts when i had trouble making levels but as time went on i stopped using the site because i kept solving my own problems, and now i dont really need help as much cause i know all the tools. But i've just recently started using f4f, though that guy im F4Fing hasnt played my level yet -_- | 2012-02-01 02:33:00 Author: lilballer22 Posts: 63 |
sometimes you have to gently remind people to F4F it. I'm especially bad about that. I'll forget to come back to the thread and say what I thought of it. When I first got on here, that's basically all I did too, was troll for levels and ask for help. Then as I got to know people and found that there are some really cool, kind and helpful people here. I've made a lot of friends here and it's easier just to PM one of my friends with "hey, do you know how to do such and such" and a lot of times it's, "yeah, I'll come to your moon the next time we're on and show you" or "I don't know, but I bet so and so knows how." like I said, it just takes some time. | 2012-02-01 02:49:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
i seem to understand now what's going on and why is it that when i (i'm new to LBP) search for the most popular levels, i always find garbage since it's difficult to find well made and fun levels, can you guys help pointing me some to play with my friends? i like mostly versus levels. Shooters, vehicles, grabinators, creatinators are nice sometimes =) | 2012-02-02 16:04:00 Author: yodavid Posts: 50 |
