I'm trying to make a bunch of short notes, but for some reason it doesn't let me create one, and instead a random huge note appears, formed out of an earlier note. Is this a known bug?

Yeah, I've had this happen to me too. No idea what the cause is. It seems to happen when I'm creating a block of more than one or two columns in length... if you know what I mean. I've started chopping up long fiddly musical phrases into single blocks. Annoying, but, it seems, necessary.

There are some hard limits. As of patch 1.06 (which was the last time I checked) you can have no more than 256 events per part, and no more than 64 discrete event times per part. Given that there are only 64 possible event times (in 4/4 mode) for the shortest part size (4 bars), then you shouldn't have the latter problem if you always use the shortest part size. Of course, this may have changed since then.

So it's basically a change like in the BETA: limit the zoom out in create mode; suddenly limit music length for no reason. Well, i'm sure it's to reduce game-breaking glitches, but I'm pretty sure that such a limit isn't that necessary. Plus, sometimes people need to have slightly longer pieces for extended sustained notes. Was I around when 1.06 was released?

There's no reason you can't use the longest possible part length if you need really long notes - you just have to limit the number of notes you put in it. You can have a huge number of simultaneous parts, so there's plenty of ways to work around the limitations. Bear in mind, this is just a computer game, not Cubase.
