Exercise as an RPG!

Archive: 7 posts

ok, so mayhaps this isn't completely a game....a meta game perhaps?

oh screw it. anyways....apparently some nerdy fitness buffs have made a website called fitocracy.com.

What is it? well, its basically a social site that gives exp for exercising. (i'm level 4! which means i'm a weakling, but i already knew that...)

it also helps you schedule workouts, has a quest system, friends lists, leaderboards, ect.

it has a smartphone site that allows you to log your workout from any iOS or Android device, and all kinds of other things i'm finding out.

Finally, an xp grind that isn't completely pointless!

so yea. i don't really know if this could be considered a game, but it is a game-esque excuse to better ones self!

Is anyone else here a member? or has heard of it?

Though it'd PROBABLY get me fit, it sounds a little... cheesy?

My parents are already sucked into an app that gives points for going to the store...

...I think at the very least I'll look at it.

it is surprisingly not all that cheesy. Kinda like exercise with a bit o Facebook and a hint of Warcraft.

also, my computer knows the correct capitalization/spelling for both of those names. This kind of scares me.

So basically, people who are too lazy to workout themselves get to use this site as a means of motivation?

....

Well, at least they're finally working out, so there's not too much to complain about.

well, the main point is to try and give motivation (having a couple of my friends and co-workers on there is more of a motivation than the xp system, honestly.), but also its kind of a social networking thing.

Oddly enough, it seems one of my more fitness oriented friends, as opposed to a hardcore gamer, has really taken to the quest system. after he does his normal daily workout routine (i think he does like 4-5 days a week) he goes and tries to knock out a quest each day.

the quests are something like do 5 pull ups in a single set, or do a set of overhead barbell shoulder presses using .55x your body weight.

what it seems to be missing is a bit more direction as to basic workout routines, be they split day, circuit, or the like. Bodyspace.com is a good resource for that, but it's more of a hardcore bodybuilder kind of deal and is much less....entertaining?
