False Idols 0: Lost In Limbo

Archive: 20 posts

I'm not sure how this level will be received as it has no real goal, no points, and no traditional gameplay. It's simply an interactive experience.

You can enjoy the ride, yes, but the main purpose of this prequel to False Idols I & II is to set the stage for the character as he as lost in oblivion in what is basically a mini episode. The story gets quite expansive throughout the series, but is still very subtle and cryptic.

There is a brief story, but it is written in poetry and passes quickly, and as usual is a layered narrative that acts both as storytelling and as metaphor for different philosophies and ideas... as well as a clue.

I'm just going to refer to it as interactive poetry, since other's have done interactive novels.

I am adrift and eternal, yet still mortal and frail
I hunger for naught in dark day and still I avail
my heart has been halted all thoughts I have pale
with neither an ear nor an eye to tell of my tale
tormented by torrent, and tossed to the gale
perhaps, should I, ought not thought to set sail
it seems that at sea no soul shall prevail
the tide of sorrow is nigh, and I must fathom to fail

A good piece on it's own, but when presented in context with the tools provided in LBP I think it's much more poignant and profound. What an amazing medium this game can be...
You, the character, are in limbo and adrift in time - sinking into madness and nothingness is what leads to the journey that begins in False Idols I. Anybody who's seen the Japanese movie IZO might get what I'm going for here...

Aside from the unconventional approach to design, the thermometer is completely maxed out with effects and I'm confident enough to guarantee you this is the most atmospheric and gorgeous single set piece you will see in LBP for a good little while.

Much thanks to OCK for a little inspiration from Legion.

P.S. you will also win a rainmaker... it will emit the smallest paintballs you can get, tinted to a blue green hue at just the right settings to be functional from any height. Be wary though, they eat up space like nothing else.

Played this earlier today. Your boat was amazing, the weather effects were incredible and I appreciate that you are trying to create a well fleshed out story with this level as your prologue. There isn't much more to say since the level only lasts a minute but it serves it's purpose and was beautiful to look at. 5 stars and hearted!2008-12-29 14:03:00

I might as well up this with a reply and a thank you. Glad you got what I was going for OCK. I originally intended the boat ride to merely be an entry point to the main level itself, but I realized that I wanted the character to die at the end, and after adding the weather effects (which maxed the thermometer to 99) I realized it wasn't going to happen. I kept wanting to do a short, story-only prelude to the series and this seemed to fit the bill just right...2009-01-02 00:21:00

Yeah I checked this out 3-4 days back and was in shock. I think you really managed to convey what you wanted to Ninja and I gave it 5 stars and a heart. I really didn't think it was possible to make LBP look like that :O2009-01-02 00:27:00

Yeah it's really beautiful bro, especially the way it is presented with the cutscenes in LBP. I hope more people have a look at this prologue, it deserves some attention (as do all your levels).

I'm upping this because I made some substantial changes to the level.

I lowered the lifetime of the emitters to increase the prominence of the rain, I added tattered sails to the ship, and an anchor to the back. I also detailed the mast to have a more narwhal-spire sort of look to the horn on the front end.

I tightened up the ship's movement a little, I added some more sound effects, and I went completely ballistic with the lighting to highlight the stormy aura and make everything feel more isolated, disorienting, and futile. It looks more like limbo, and a storm of the century now IMO.

I also changed the lighting at the scoreboard/heaven area to make it more visible and pleasent.

I'm much happier with it, so check it out if you're interested. I have a bit more thermometer room now after messing with the emitters a little, so I may eventually added more effects or something else to this down the line.

wow. I almost wish you hadn't done such amazing weather effects... almost overshadows the amazing work you did on the ship. This level sort of reminds me of the PSN downloadable game Linger in Shadows. There's not necessarily a big adventure waiting... Instead, you used your creative talent to express yourself and put and extra layer on your False Idols levels. The afterlife checkpoint was beautifully done.

Totally radical.

Thanks, man... that's all I was really going for. Some backstory and some self expression... I haven't gotten to purchase Linger In Shadows yet, but I know enough about to get the gist of it, and it's definitely what I'm going for - interactive art. LBP can be anything you want it to.2009-01-13 02:34:00

This is creativity and innovation at its best ^^"

And yeah this truly illustrates that LBP can be anything you want it to.

This sounds amazing, Ninja, consider it added to my 'next to play' list. Sounds so beautiful!

(May I just ask, have you already made False Idols I & II or are they yet to come?)

I added some prizes to the level in tough to reach places... various ship pieces and aspects of the level and they each have their own name as a facet of the story. Sort of like a character.

...and I decided to give the ship itself as a gift for collecting all the prizes. It's non-shareable so I'm semi-comfortable with giving it away. It comes free of all the effects and mouths and whatnot. You can see it in full color, and full light in create mode and see all the detail that isn't visible while playing.

Played this a while back, but I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It's great to see people trying things a little out of the ordinary. Nice work.2009-01-26 16:00:00

This is a really well fleshed out idea. It's cool cause that's what it is an idea. It's a non level, more of a cross between interactive art and story. Great stuff!2009-01-26 16:42:00

Thanks, guys. I've gotten a few crappy comments on some levels lately on LBP, so that's nice to hear. I know it probably comes off as weird or "wtf?" to alot of players, but I really am proud of the look and effect that I achieved with this. I don't think there's anything else like it.

I recently changed some of the emitter stuff up, namely the lifetime of the paintballs, and it free'd about half the thermometer. This would allow me to do alot more like I originally intended when I started building the ship - but I like it as is now, and would probably only ever add more effects or detail to what's already there. I can't see the message coming across at all, or the piece still being the same if I added a generic platforming segment to the mix.

I thought about making a second version of this level and replacing the paintballs with points and calling it a survival mini-game lol - maybe ramp up the boat movement as time goes on.

That was simply stunning. @_@ The boat, the weather effects, the lighting, the poetry... awesome work!

Making another version and making it a mini-game sounds like a good idea, really. Maybe you can have fire falling from the sky along with the score bubbles.

Thanks, man. That made my morning and that is a great idea... I'm currently at my 20 max publishes, with a bunch of work in progress stuff for safe keeping. As soon as I free up some space I will definitely do this - this is a level you can really only place a handful of times, if not once or twice and the ship is begging for more use.

Raining fire fits perfect! I figure the lighting bolt could be thickened up too with some invisible rubber of the same shape tacked onto it, for another time based hazard... and I could brobably wobble bolt the ship to some dark matter for a more controlled movement that I could set to speed and a mag box.

Yeah the ship looks great, it does fill up the thermo quite a bit if I'm guessing correctly. Would be great to see this used in a minigame . I posted my comment on this one in your compilation thread for the false idols series btw.2009-02-11 12:40:00
