Making backgrounds?
Archive: 3 posts
Can I get some suggestions on how to make a decent looking background? I know how to use the extra layers but they make things look convoluted and messy (at least when I use them). I've also tried making a flat backdrop on the most distant of the four layers and depending solely on stickers, but that looks even worse. Any useful tips or ideas? Also, the background will be constantly moving--considering this is for my side scroller level. So there doesn't have to be a great level of detail, as long as it doesn't look lazy. The camera is at a fixed angle and position. Edit: Sorry, I should've clarified. This is more of a "how do I fool the eye" thread, rather than a generic "how do I make my level look good" thread... if that makes sense. | 2012-01-23 05:44:00 Author: Rainbro Dash Posts: 121 |
Yeah i can help you, i have a lot of experience in the background, here is an example of my background work http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/606861c566867cc6d309bf06758e3ae82576899d.jpg Basically map everything out in your head before you start making it. After you have a good idea of what you want make your ground first, i usually make it about 8 layers in the foreground and around 30 in the background, though i would recommend you make it to the size that fits your level best. USE (small)GRID SNAP WHEN PLACING AND WHEN BUILDING YOUR GROUND 1, you will want to put your basic scenery in the background Ex. hills, trees, rocks, etc. (not including your complex shapes yet 2, begin putting your more advanced scenery in the background BUT do no place it where you want it yet. 3, when you decide where you want your scenery Copy them and move them to where you want (this is where grid snap helps the most) when you get then to where you want then place them. If you do it like this and use grid snap building backgrounds will get much much easier. If this didnt help you please let me know and i will give you a more detailed plan. | 2012-01-23 12:22:00 Author: Tyranny68 Posts: 390 |
Yeah thanks that helps a lot, actually! Especially your example picture; it's really helpful to see it all come together. So if you have any other good samples, that'd be great. If not, then I'll just post whatever I get started on and you can tell me if I'm on the right track. | 2012-01-24 03:21:00 Author: Rainbro Dash Posts: 121 |
