Liberator - Spotlighted! Team Picked!

Archive: 39 posts

Liberator is a terrain-based side scrolling adventure, in which you pilot through diverse locations and face many different challenges, each with their unique strategies.

This is a level I've wanted to do since the release of LBP2. I've always loved games like "Scramble" and "Super Cobra". They had a really addicting quality to them - there was always that drive to see how far I could get.... and there was always the mystery of what came next.... In "Liberator", I'm trying to recreate that old-school feel and intensity.

This game features:

4 layers of retro-style parallax scrolling.
Lots of game play diversity.
Retro-style landscapes combined with detailed enemies
A really fun final boss

Hope you enjoy it! I'm able to give F4F. Just ask.

lol... I thought I saw some "Liberating" stuff being published on my LBP.me dashboard recently. Thanks for posting!! I will be sure and try it next time I am on.

This is definitely a must play!

Nice job on this, it really brought back some fun memories of games like Scramble and Vanguard....it's been a while since I've seen a game advertised as having multi-layered parallax scrolling!

The respawning seems broken ATM. In my first couple of games, when I would lose my last life the game wouldn't end, but I'd respawn with four more lives but no control over the ship anymore.

It also might be good to have a second or two of invincibility when respawning. There are times when you've got a pause while the game respawns you, and other times that I felt like it rather unfairly spawned you too quickly and right in the middle of a tricky area. From what I remember, some of those types of games would move to a more open area to spawn a new ship, rather than respawn you in a tight cavern, for example.

Overall though, it's really tight...nice job!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see if the respawning is broken... but it may just be the respawning logic working.

The respawning works this way:

* Each section has "safe zones" so it tries to always respawn into an area that you can't get killed in
* But... there are areas, such in the asteroids or at the final boss, where respawning at a safe area isn't possible, so your ship can't be destroyed for 2 seconds after respawning. So, you're really safe for 2 seconds after dying no matter what.

If you die right near the end of the asteroid field, it waits to respawn until you enter the next cave.

I've never seen it break, and it's been play tested hundreds of times... is there any way you could give it another shot and see if maybe you thought it was broken, but you just hadn't waited quite long enough?

Looks like you've fixed it....but it was definitely messed up for me the first two plays. I never got a game over, just four new ships (but no control). Sometimes just republishing helps

I changed a couple things - now when you die, it's at least 1 second before respawning, and I also added the holo effect when respawning so it's clear where you are.... but I'd love to know what was broken - that's gonna bug me! . I guess no matter how many times you test, SOMETHING goes wrong!2012-01-20 15:21:00

I just played this level and it is really fun and addictive. The controls are easy and it has a ton of replay value. I do think the look is a little bland, but I think that might be you paying homage to the old school nature of that genre. I like these side scrolling shooter's but I do wish there was something there to make it stand out from the rest. I would rate this 3.5 stars. I do think this is a solid level that is fun and addictive, but it's bland look and unoriginality hold it back a bit. Overall you did a real good job and this is one fun level!2012-01-20 19:21:00

Yes, the visual style was on-purpose. I agree it's not super original.... but on the other hand, this is a remake of a game I worked on for the Atari back in 1985... I did work quite a bit on the enemy stickering, but decided to go with retro for the landscapes.

Did you actually finish the level? There is quite a bit of originality later in the game (as usual, I work up to the best bits), including some really nice dog-fighting segments. Also, I have been looking and never found this concept done really well. The ones I looked at were either quite short, buggy, no logic for lives, or were more button-mashers with very little strategy... or had no diversity. I would think the design quality and completeness would make it stand out.

Played it.
Don't be fooled by my terrible score, I tried my best! xP
Loved the level, didn't get to see all of it (I died near the....the...the things that have a round head and fire lasers? :S )
Anyway, really liked it
It's a level that has great replayability :3 So I'll be sure to come back and better my score!
Only complaint is that it takes too long to respawn xP
If you want to, feel free to F4F on mah level (in sig :3)...or don't, I don't care :S

Glad you liked it! Sounds like you were pretty close to the final boss. The key to these dudes is basic dog-fighting. They are faster than you, but they have a slower turning radius. When they come at you, you can dodge to force them to fly past you, then shoot them as they turn towards you. Their flanking you creates some very cool looking situations. You can cause them to crash into each other, shoot them to send them off into a wall, and so on.

Only complaint is that it takes too long to respawn xP

This one was necessary. There are 2 safe spawn points in each area to prevent you from spawning into the middle of rockets taking off or spawning into the middle of landscape. The entire game was designed around these spawn points, so not much I can do here. All I can say is... it's better than any other alternative I could find.

I'll check out your level pronto.

You nailed it Cub, it 's a worthy tribute. I actually didn't find it too hard to finish the level (yeh, Scramble was a fave of mine too) but getting a decent score was where I found the challenge. I really wish you had the time to make more levels, because this and Vectroids both absolutely stand toe to toe with the games they're inspired by. Loved it.2012-01-21 18:37:00

Already had it queued.

If you want to do F4F, I just released a new, short trailer for The Dream Catcher.

Either, I'm checking this out. Looks fantastic!

I found it very hard, so after a few retries I stopped playing. If you keep in mind that most of the community members are young, I guess it will be hard to get plays. Unless it's a survival, I never put a number of lives. I lower score instead. I really liked it, but I'm not good enough to play more than a minute, it's too frustrating. Perhaps make it reset your score and number of lives when you reach 0 lives ?

If you need any health meter logic, please try my toolkit, I just rebuilt the level so there's a nice tutorial.

I'm so glad you got a chance to play it, and put in the time to finish it! You nailed my reason for doing this and Vectroids - I felt the LBP2 tools were good enough to build these games better than the originals, rather than have them be LBP knock-offs that are SORT OF like the originals. Thanks so much for playing it!

I will absolutely check it out. Been looking forward to Dream Catcher, so I probably would have anyway...

Ummmm....... wow, you don't know me at all! . Maybe go back and read my Creator Spotlight..... they nicknamed me the "Joypad Destroyer".

Ok, I was just going to say "thanks for giving it a shot".... but I have a bit of time so I'll answer properly.

I don't give a flying rats patoody about the number of plays. The ONLY level I've ever built that targeted number of plays was "Tiger Woods Mini Golf".... and I felt a bit dirty for it.....

My feeling is: the kids have enough easy, encouraging levels in LBP. They don't need more. My target market for this is people who love the challenge and skill of a well-designed arcade game that kicks butt and makes their heart beat a bit faster. I got more enjoyment out of the few that played Vectroids several hundred times than the 40,000 others who popped in to take a quick look. If I didn't get any more plays on this level I would be fine - I accomplished what I set out to do.

Now, there's a whole bunch of levels on the showcase in which you can't die and will give you a warm fuzzy feeling.... may I direct you?

It's all right, I guess people like hard challenges. I just hate frustrating levels, especially when hitting a wall kills you. But I guess that's just me ^^
Ha, naming a level "tiger woods" XD
(I guess you're not in search of plays that much, you got over 1000 fans.)
Since that's your kind of game, did you ever try "the impossible game" or pixeljunk sidescroller ?

What an awesome shooter game! The visuals are neatly polished with material choices and some nice effects, and the shooter gameplay is cool with two different ways to attack enemies. The echoing music is radical, too. I couldn't get to the final boss, but I'll be back to get there thanks to this level's good replay value. Although it's really challenging, players will have a blast when they get the hang of this level.
VISUALS: 5/5
SOUND: 5/5
GAMEPLAY: 5/5
OVERALL: A yay and heart.

Was only on for a moment so I put this on and found it challenging and fun. The level looks great and plays flawlessly.

I died fairly quick, but I just need to find my strategy to the rockets.

Overall, I think you accomplished what you set out to make. Nicely done! (I'll be getting a better score tonight.).

I think you younger players don't appreciate the level of challenge that we had to put up with in arcades when we were your age.

If you really want hard, try and make it to the end of any of the R-Type games, or Ghouls'N Ghosts

I died very quickly a few times right at the start, but I don't think it was too much of a problem, a little more run up would be nice. I think I got caught out because I was expecting the bombs to be limited.

I died in the cave and waited for respawn, which I don't think is too bad, but maybe some sort of beeping or "respawning..." would make the (short) time waiting feel even shorter.

Great execution on this one. I'm generally terrible at this type of game because I get distracted watching my ship or the enemy shots and rarely both. The patterns are very learnable and if you stick with it you do a little better each time. The score in the upper left was my nemesis, I kept ending up underneath it and dying because I couldn't see, lol. Like Jules I spammed missles and rockets. The asteroids and final boss were my favorite parts, these sections were actually relaxing compared to navigating the corridors.2012-01-23 02:37:00

Yeah, although this game is certainly hard by LBP2 standards.... it's really not that hard when you look at the early arcade games. I think making it through Scramble or Super Cobra was MUCH harder than this. The fact that Poms and NinjaMicWZ made it through in 2 tries proves it - many people NEVER made it through these games at the arcade.

I'll think about this and see if I can come up with something.... maybe the song they play on Jeopardy when waiting....

Like Jules I spammed missles and rockets.
There are certainly parts where it's a good strategy, such as flying over the top of the fortresses. It's the same strategy as the original Scramble. Also, it helps in the electric section when destroying the power cubes.

Thanks everyone who gave this a shot - it was relatively painless compared to my past releases.

The general consensus is, if you like classic-side-scrolling-terrain-based-shmupps... this one is excellent. It's a lot like "Scramble" or "Super Cobra", but there's quite a bit of variety and surprises if you stick it out and practice it a few times. There are absolutely NO cheap deaths... with some practice everything can be avoided.

Poms, NinjaMicWZ, AND the first random player after I published made it all the way through the game on their second try, so I don't think it's too hard (except maybe by LBP standards).

Hope you enjoy!

Thanks! Glad to have some stick to it! You seemed like a good candidate for playing it... having done Cyberstrata and some of the most challenging platformers out there.

Now I wished I had finished mine XD
You still should - as far as I'm concerned, you can't have enough of these. When I was a kid I played quite a bit of Scramble, Super Cobra, Sea Dragon, Looping... (ah... Looping - I need to look at doing something like that game.... but it would probably be FAR too challenging for the LBP community...)

Heh.... I just noticed Spaff played it a bunch of times and hearted it. Awesome! Darn near everyone I was hoping would check it out has tried it. Even at the relatively low plays, I'm an unbelievably happy camper.

You see everyone? This is what its all about! This kid reached into his gut, pulled out a big chunk of courage, and faced his nemesis! You've succeeded where others such as CompherMC, MrSupercomputer, and my son screamed and ran! I'm proud of you!

And I'll check out your tug of war game tonight!

Sorry for the bump.....

I just realized this level (over a year and a half old) got Team Picked today. I'm sitting at my desk working, and doing my quick little jump into LBP.ME to see if there are any levels I want to add into my queue for the next time I get a chance to play and....

I almost fell on the floor.

Just wanted to throw out a HUGE thanks to Stevenl. You made my week. Seriously. I know you've heard it before.... but seriously. THANK YOU!!!!!

I may not get any work done for the rest of the day. I'm a bit stunned right now.
