SR20DETDOG's Diary Project

Archive: 8 posts

For the first time in my life I made some New Year resolutions for myself. And those were to be more organised, work harder and get back into art (mainly drawing). It's been about 2 years since I've done any real drawing, somewhere along the way I just lost the urge to do it, and never quite got out of that mindset. Over the past two years I've been becoming more and more frustrated with myself, drawing is (or I guess was) what I'm best at, and I couldn't stand that I was letting myself lose that.

So with the boost of dollars that is Christmas money I went out and bought myself a tablet to get myself drawing in the digital world. And that worked, kinda...
...There were some problems though, the biggest one being, I've never really drawn in colour before. I had attempted to many times over the years but as much as I tried I could never make it turn out the way I wanted it to. So I'd really thrown myself straight into the deep end, I was not only teaching myself how to draw again but also for the first time ever how to colour and digitally at that all the while I'm trying to get my hand to work together with my eyes that are looking at the screen instead of where I'm working.

This, while still good, was too slow of a process. I needed to start back where I left off, with plain old pencil and pen on paper, while still learning to draw digitally on the side. And that leads me to this thread, in which I'm going to try to address each one of those New Year resolutions by combining them into an art project.

So I bought myself a $4 diary about a week ago to keep myself more organised and help me get things done. In an instance of inspiration I decided that every week I would "mark off" that week by filling up the page with a drawing(s) to get myself back into drawing which I haven't done in some time.

So here's Day 1, or day 18?

Nothing particularly riveting right now, just some random doodling to get things started. I'll get a better quality scan when I can too.

I know, I know, I've only updated this once so far. More updates will come eventually, I promise.

I think that's a great way to get back into it.
May I suggest you start with what your comfortable with and then jump into color? It would be a shame for you to get frustrated and quit.
Your random doodle is quite good.
It will be great to compare your first pic with one a year from now.

Thanks Lady_Luck.
Definitely, frustration is probably my biggest concern in all this, I'm trying to keep check that I don't bite off more than I can chew. I still need to scan yesterday's and finish/scan today's but I've been extra busy lately, I can see this being a common occurrence over the year.

Thanks, it's a pretty nonsensical doodle, due to the fact I wasn't thinking about what I was drawing rather I was mucking around with basic techniques (shading, straight lines, natural lines, a bit of 3D etc) and just drew the first thing I thought would work well with each technique. That and it was past midnight, so I was felling pretty lazy

It's going to be pretty strange for me looking at a full year of my drawings. I've only kept 3 drawing/artworks so I've never really seen any of my old work before.

I thought it said "Dairy Project" at first . Anyway, that's a great start. I'm glad to see that you're picking up again. Art is a wonderful thing, and it can be really hard to keep at. Don't feel too restricted by it, the point of art is to feel free and flexible. Great doodles by the way. 2012-01-20 15:44:00

Haha, thanks, I'd like this to help me get back to be drawing like I used to. In school some of my books would have more drawings than work in them., kinda wish I'd kept some of those.

There should be 2 more doodles up there but I've very quickly realised this everyday business isn't going to be easy to keep on top of. So I'm going to switch it to weekly updates on the weekends from now on, leaving me plenty of time to get other things down during the week.

Just post them when you're ready.
There's no need to put a strict deadline on yourself since you're sharing your work for pleasure and not pay.
I'm sure we'll all just enjoy seeing them.

Woo, update! Well not quite, diary pictures will come eventually I promise, I just didn't want to start a new thread. So as a cop out here's something I've been working on in Photoshop recently, it's progressing slowly but surely.

Nice work, doodling is a great way to get back into art, since it brings out your natural style and doesn't require any stress or frustration (like 'srs' art does,) so you can gradually get back into it. :'3 I doodle a lot at school, which is prolly not to be recommended, but when I am bored I doodle best. x3 Its mostly patterns though. Can't wait to see more of what you do. 2012-02-10 08:49:00
