Fallout 3: Vault 101

Archive: 9 posts

If anyone read my intro thread, I decided to abandon Neighbourhood because it soon turned into an excuse for plonking stuff down randomly without rhyme nor reason.
So, I've turned my efforts towards a *ahem* very creatively interpreted (read: it's not actually) Vault 101, complete with puzzles, Soviet-style guards who look more like monkeys (that'd be thanks to that mouth contraption) and even a co-op puzzle. Got a couple of traps in there, but was wondering if anyone might have suggestions for other traps I could put in? Also wondering whether it would be worth doing a boss battle of sorts against the Overseer and how could I pull it off?
Am very aware, having played a couple, that there are tons of Fallout style levels out there, so hopefully this will be a somewhat different one from the pack. I will endeavour to get screenies up soon, am almost done on the first part (living quarters). Once I do get screenies up, if anyone likes the look of anything in it, do let me know, and I will put it as a prize bubble to grab :-).

You should make the level multipath based on dialogue options... just some random switch stuff that permanently opens/shuts different paths... it doesn't have to be 3 seperate levels, but just like a couple different corridors that lead to the same place to the next option, or give different story sequences. That would be very cool.2008-12-29 01:00:00

This bit requires 2 people.

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I hadn't thought of that myself, mainly because I was wondering how to express this multi-path gameplay via the platforming medium, but the corridors idea sounds great. In fact, come to think of it, I might consider taking that idea and using it for the exit section. As for putting it together... well, let's just say when I thought I was going to have a simple time putting a trap together in 5 minutes, it took me half an hour, but the experimentation was the fun part :-).

Looks very end-of-the-worldish. Is that what Fallout 3 is based on? I've only seen some screens as Oblivion turned me off of WRPGs... 2008-12-29 01:49:00

Yeah, man... it's ridiculous how much time you can sink into small bits of a level when you get the ball rolling. All of a sudden it's the wee hours of the morning and you realize you shouldda been asleep by now.

@ Super: Fallout 3 is awesome, man. I was hooked on it like nothing else, until I finally popped in Little Big Planet which superceded all my other games. I wish I had kept up playing and waited, because I'll probably just end up restarting my save and creating a new character. I highly recommend it - even if you're not a big RPG guy. I missed out on Oblivion and have always been more into console-style Japanese RPG's, but Fallout 3 would have been my game of the year if it wasn't for LBP.

Or when I should be getting on with coursework and revision for exams .
Decided to take your idea and use it for the second part of the level, where there will be choices that get closed off once you reach the end those paths (and obviously you can't go back over the other ones as well, otherwise that would ruin the replay value ). Anyways, thanks for the feedback, more work will be done today, and more screenies will be up .
UPDATE: Have some more screenies... and a query.

The Overseer... bane of my level creation.
The Overseer is proving to be a bit of a tough one to put together. I want him to blow apart when a switch on him is pressed, but half the time it doesn't even do that! Is there a way I can do this? I want his hand to come off and let go of the key to get out of the level. I figured that rigging explosives to him will solve part of it, but how do I make him blow apart all over the place? Suggestions would be very welcome :-).

Looking cool so far.

Make the hand out of wood (not metal, that will weigh him down and possibly crush the player if it lands on him) so that it doesn't explode with the rest of him - cardboard and dissolve are good. I honestly recommend using dissolve for the whole thing, because it seems to do better when it comes to stickering... and is ultimately a more flexibile material for boss purposes.

Actually, if if it's a switch you're going for, I would honestly recommend using a grab switch and making his head out of a sponge. It will still blow up, and getting to the head to grab can be a challenge right?

Fallout 3, my fav. game this year(first one I 100%ed in the last 5 years or so),
followed by mgs4 and lbp.

try to work on your lighting,
fallout gets a lot of its feeling from the lighting, destruction and crap everywhere.
