A Survivors Guide to the Gaming Apocalypse

Archive: 16 posts

It's 2012, and according to some interpretations of the ancient Mayan calendar that means we're screwed.

But how will the world end? Video games offer no shortage of ideas, from boring ol' nuclear holocaust, to the thrill of a zombie infestation. Here are 20 game-ways we're all gonna die.

Wasteland (1988)

It's not the first video game set in a post-apocalyptic world, but action RPG Wasteland is the most notable early example. In Wasteland a nuclear war between America and the USSR has left much of the world a 'wasteland.' The game takes place in the Southwest United States and you're put in charge of a group of Desert Rangers (what's left of the army) as they are called upon to investigate a series of disturbances in the desert, check up on survivors and recruit new members to the team. Along the way, you'll need to battle hideous Uzi wielding mutants. One interesting thing about Wasteland was the fact it was a persistent world ? gamers were encouraged to copy the game and play from the copied discs as all changes, including a team member's death, were permanent.

Midwinter (1989)

It's 2099 -- the game's developers were sensible enough to pick a date so far in the future that no-one who played the original would be likely to see it. A second ice age has descended on the planet. The whole world has got a bit chilly, and is now completely covered with snow. The culprit is a meteorite landing in Burma and covering the planet in 'diamond dust,' leading to a major drop in the world's ambient temperature. Those in the northern areas froze to death and the more temperate zones have become overcrowded, as people migrate to where it's warmest. The game is set on Midwinter, a newly formed island that was created by volcanic activity and settled by refugees. Two factions fight for control, the Free Villages Police Force and General Masters' army. One of the very first sandbox games, Midwinter had a map size of 160,000 square miles and was widely considered to be ahead of its time. It makes us feel cold just thinking about it.

Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

A point and click adventure set in what's left of Australia, in this game the world ended due to some kind of nuclear fallout or devastating pollution ? the game is sketchy on the actual details. The poor are forced to live in the upper, polluted levels while the rich enjoy the luxury of pollution free living quarters underground. At some point in the past there was a Euro-American war, and now Australia is controlled by a super computer obsessed with bureaucracy. We play as Rob Foster, who was brought up by a tribe of bandits in the outback after a helicopter crash killed his parents. One day, security agents from the metropolis Union City come looking for Rob, and take him away. One of the best things about the game was its wicked sense of humour, proving that even if it's the end of the world, at least we can still have a laugh.

Fallout (1997)

Long before Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, RPG Fallout was released in 1997. In it, the world ended after a worldwide war over the last remaining stores of oil. The war continues for five years between 2052 and 2077 until somebody decides to wheel out the nuclear weaponry. No-one knows who fired on who first, but in less than two hours most of the world is in ruins and a radioactive wasteland.

The game is set about a hundred years later, where humanity's remaining inhabitants survive in underground shelters called 'Vaults.' Our hero lives in the appropriately named Vault 13 and one day is sent outside to find parts for the water recycling unit. Along the way he'll also have to deal with The Master, a super mutant that is determined to destroy humanity by evolving us all into mutants like him because humanity "brought nuclear death to us all" and thinks that to avoid bickering among different creatures "we need one race." Unfortunately, mutants turn out to be sterile, so that wasn't such a great plan after all. Life carries on as before.

Deus Ex (2000)

In action role-playing game Deus Ex, a plague called the 'Grey Death' (a fatal autoimmune disease) afflicts humanity. There is no cure, only a drug called Ambrosia, which halts the process but needs to be regularly administered. There's not enough supply of Ambrosia to meet demand. The result is that only those deemed to be important to the world are allowed access ? in reality this means the rich. When the unwashed masses realize they're all going to die, they're understandably not too happy about it. Riots occur worldwide and several terrorist organizations come into being, fighting for the common man by blowing things up and killing rich people.

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (2004)

One of the strangest scenarios ever conceived in video games, Digital Devil Saga is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland called the Junkyard. Six rival gangs fight to the death for the chance of being the last gang standing, to claim the prize of being able to ascend to 'nirvana.'

The Embryon tribe are the 'orange' gang and each member of the gang has a powerful demon form they can change into, and they must devour their enemies to survive. But is the junkyard really all that's left of the world? What is nirvana exactly? How does eating other people mean they're worthy of it? And why does it never stop raining?

Half-Life 2 (2004)

Following on from the events of the first game, where scientists at the Black Mesa Research Facility accidentally caused an inter-dimensional instability (oops), in the second game, this rift has drawn the Earth to the attention of a species called the Combine. The Combine decide since they're here they may as well invade and a war rages for all of seven hours before humanity is defeated. A police state is implemented by the aliens and a suppression field is placed around the planet which effectively makes humanity sterile as long as it's in place. As thus, people grow older until no children remain, meaning that we will eventually become extinct. In the meantime, however, at least plane journeys will be considerably more pleasant.

Resistance: Fall of Man (2006)

In first-person shooter Resistance, in 1950 we were invaded by the Chimera, who, embarrassingly, conquered the planet without too much trouble. They capture humans to help build up their armies and turn them into super soldiers with orders to quash any humans still fighting. The Americans and the British finally put aside their differences and work together on a secret weapon that they hope can be used against the Chimera ? an alien species called Angels. However, it turns out that Angels are actually just a different type of Chimera and it all goes horribly wrong. Time for a rethink in the sequel.

BioShock (2007)

Rapture, the underwater city where BioShock is set, was meant to be utopia, a place where scientists and intellectuals could live free from the tedious interference of religion and governments. The idea was that far more scientific and cultural progress could be made away from those pesky little things like ethics. What could possibly go wrong?

After the discovery of ADAM, a substance that alters the user's DNA and gives them superhuman powers, a kind of class system soon springs up between those who have the powers and those who do not. This ends in an all-out war, with those who use ADAM going mad and roaming the smouldering remains of Rapture attacking survivors. Probably not exactly what Ayn Rand, whose philosophies the game's dystopian future was based on, had intended.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007)

In an alternate universe, although the Chernobyl disaster was initially successfully contained, a second explosion occurred in 2006. Strange things started to happen in the exclusion zone, with bizarre mutations occurring in fauna, flora and...the laws of physics. Some people who were working at the nuclear power plant when the second disaster occurred also wander the site, now hideously mutated.

Various anomalies are present in the exclusion zone, including some that give electric shocks and some that crush anything that enters. To ensure safety while walking around, it's advisable to throw things ahead of you and make sure they land on the ground as expected.

Several years after the disaster, people who call themselves Stalkers enter the zone to scavenge and explore in this creepy, atmospheric FPS modelled on the real remains of Chernobyl and nearby town Pripyat.

Left 4 Dead (2008)

A highly contagious virus called the Green Flu infects Pennsylvania in survival horror Left 4 Dead, causing those afflicted to become extremely violent and lose their higher brain functions. Only a small handful of people are unaffected since they have natural immunity. It's important to differentiate here that the infected aren't actually zombies, because that would be silly. They've never risen from the dead, just become infected with a virus that makes them act suspiciously like the undead. Despite attempts to contain it, the Green Flu spreads nationwide and the end of the game sees our rag tag group of survivors sailing to the islands of the Florida Keys in the hope that they might still be a safe haven.

Fallen Earth (2009)

What doesn't happen to bring about the end of the world in Fallen Earth? First there are a series of natural disasters, then a strange new disease named the Shiva virus appears ? which, among other things, causes dance-like convulsions in the victims. As the virus spreads across the globe, countries accuse each other of manufacturing the virus and the fighting escalates to nuclear conflict. Only one percent of the human race remains, living in the Hoover Dam Garrison and the Grand Canyon Province, believed to be the only habitable places left on the planet. Unrestrained by pesky governments and armies, humanity splits into six different factions, each with different philosophies. Some, like the Enforcers, wish to try to rebuild and go back to life as it was before, while others, like the Children of the Apocalypse, just want to enjoy a spot of anarchy.

Darksiders (2010)

The final battle of Armageddon has begun. Oh well. You play as War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Set in the present day, angels and demons have descended on the planet to duke it out and destroy everything that gets in the way. War is sent in to maintain order and act as a mediator between heaven and hell. But when he arrives he's told off for arriving at the party a bit early ? none of the other horsemen have arrived yet, and the seventh seal hasn't been broken. But don't worry, by the end of the game that's all been sorted out and he's headed back to earth with his mates Strife, Fury and Death. Hurrah! I mean, oh no!

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010)

The apocalypse has never looked so bright and green as it does in Enslaved. While other games like Fallout 3 and Fallen Earth showed the end of the world as a virtual desert, in Enslaved, nature has started to take back the land. It's 150 years in the future and this time it was global war that decimated humanity. Most of the human race ended up killing each other during the war, leaving killer robots behind that think the war's still going on.

Swathes of humanity are enslaved by a strange man called Pyramid, who uses headbands both to control them and to pacify them with images of a better, more peaceful time. The game raises the question of whether it is better to live in a pleasant dream world or a hopeless and miserable reality. One of the main characters, Trip, decides reality is always better and pulls the plug, but the protagonist Monkey isn't so sure.

Metro 2033 (2010)

In Metro 2033, it's good old nuclear war that ends the world, some time in 2013. Set in Moscow years later, the few thousand survivors of the disaster have retreated underground and live in the city's subway system. Each station has become a village with their own tribe, rules and political structure. The ozone layer has been obliterated, making travel above ground a deadly business. To venture into the outside world now you'll need to come equipped with a gas mask, and mutants are prolific in both the subway and the world above.

Since money has become worthless, the new currency is old world ammo, which is more effective than the new ammo people have managed to create since.

Metro 2033 really does its best to make you feel like you're living the apocalypse ? there's no map to follow; just a compass and virtually no HUD. Gas mask filters need to be constantly replaced and ammo is very, very scarce indeed.

Dead Rising 2 (2010)

In Dead Rising 2, the apocalypse finally becomes fun. In the original Dead Rising, scientists trying to mass produce cattle accidentally caused wasps to mutate into evil zombie-making pests. Since we now have a world infested with zombies, humanity decides it might as well have a little fun with them. Some reprehensible media types have created a game show called Terror is Reality where the objective is for contestants to kill as many zombies as possible in a variety of games. You play as Chuck, a contestant on the show, who gets stuck in a casino when the zombies escape. Chuck decides the best way of dealing with that is to build elaborate contraptions to kill zombies in as many inventive different ways as possible ? preferably whilst wearing silly costumes.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of The Moon (2010)

In Fragile Dreams, one day everyone just inexplicably disappears. The cities, with no one to live in them or maintain them, fall into ruins. 15 year old Seto lives with an elderly man who he affectionately refers to as Grandpa. One day his Grandpa dies, leaving Seto wondering if he is now truly alone in the world.

He decides to leave the safe haven of their house to find out, wandering empty amusement parks, shopping centers and hotels, reading people's memories and ? in the face of a lack of other people ? befriending other creatures including ghosts and robots. Few games manage to feel as genuinely lonely as Fragile Dreams.

Rage (2011)

According to Rage, we've got a few years left ? the world is in fact due to end in 2029, not 2012, so no need to panic just yet. An asteroid called Apophis will come crashing down on August 23, destroying life as we know it. Before the impact, many humans fled to underground 'Arks' where they were sealed in cryogenic pods to be awakened when Earth was deemed habitable again. Over 100 years later, it becomes obvious that this project wasn't as successful as originally hoped, as the protagonist of the story finds when they wake up to find that their Ark has been so badly damaged that they are the only survivor. Stumbling to the surface, they find that there are still small pockets of survivors above ground and these now live in clusters round the remaining habitable areas. These gangs are under constant attack from bandits and mutants, and enjoy indulging in a spot of homicidal racing to pass the time.

I Am Alive (2012)

We've not been told what happened to destroy the world in I Am Alive. It is referred to only as 'The Event' ? as you play through the game, what exactly The Event was is slowly revealed. Cities are in ruins, the vast majority of the population has been wiped out and many areas are uninhabitable. But perhaps the worst thing about the end of the world in I Am Alive is that other people, who seem to have either become broken scavengers or have turned to the dark side, are killing and eating others for sustenance.

Mass Effect 3 (2012)

In the first Mass Effect, Commander Shepard discovered that an ancient alien race called the Reapers had plans to stamp out humanity. Every 50,000 years or so, the Reapers return to our galaxy and harvest all the advanced life forms. The cycle then starts all over again.

Mass Effect 3 is make or break for humanity ? the game starts with Commander Shepard standing trial on Earth when our home world is attacked by Reapers, who decimate the planet. One of the trailers for the game shows a wounded soldier inside a bombed-out Big Ben, surveying the ruins of London as huge Reapers wander through the wreckage, exterminating any survivors. Commander Shepard is the universe's only hope.

TL;DR- Read it.

Honestly I don't know if the bolded part made sense...

And we do have a written RPG. It's called The Console Wars: Blackout (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=64383-The-Console-Wars-Blackout).

Sign-ups closed a while ago, though.

Thank you. That was why I brought it here. The majority of gamers don't look at news sites because they're 'boring'. But they do have some cool articles. Like this one!

HALT.

Allow me to provide a background for Project Eden, as the wikipedia page for it is bland and silly.

*goes to find video game case*

Edit: I can't seem to find the game, but here is a bit of something from IGN...

As a member of the elite Urban Protection Agency, it's your job to safeguard the lives of the citizens that inhabit massive cities of the future that spiral skyward. Too bad for those that dwell beneath the boundaries of the city, deep in its many intricate sub-levels, that rule doesn't apply. Much as today's modern cities grow outward to accommodate the growing populace, Eden and all other cities of the future will grow upward, to such a degree that the Earth's diameter will expand and the lower levels of these cities, the desolate bowels of an urban sprawl long forgotten, will harbor the "under life."Essentially they just build over the old cities for miles, which left underground, rotted cities, like this:

That dude's eyes are creepy... /

...

Also thought of another game, Crysis 2. Yup.
