I cant focus on sticking to a level thats more are so done (help)

Archive: 17 posts

I am thinking of making a little platform level using a mallet kinda like wack-a-mole. Tho the story im thinking of is you help out a rabbit by wacking the moles that eat his carrots on his land.

The theme im thinking is a kinda carrot landscape type vector style type of setting, somthing diffrent then from how I use to creating levels.

The question is sholud I make this? I am still working on my 2 other levels and I just keep going to differnt levels when I think of somthing :/ and I need to focus on my level that is more are so done which is my spider level.

So should I make this which I am not going all out with this level, it will be a little platforming level nothing big. Are should I just focus on my other levels which are more are half way done (not really there like 5% more are so done ^^ lol)

So what should I do?

Strange question, easy answer.
Do what is most fun to you. If it is something different from the type of level you are usually making, it is probably more fun and a new challenge to you.

I wish you great fun in either case.
See you online!

Ah yes. You share an extremely annoying problem with me. I just call it "Creator's Block" (like writer's block) because I don't know how to describe it. I'm guessing that you have so many good ideas and levels you want to make, but it overwhelms you? And then you can't finish a level? I would either eliminate the other levels (choose which one you like the most and delete the others to save space and prevent destraction) or try my best not to drift off. It happens to me all the time . If it's a challenge (like what above said), it's up to you to quit or stick to it. It's supposed to be fun to make levels, so if you're having fun making it, then I would stick to it. Hope it helps! 2012-01-08 14:08:00

Yes that must be it I guess (creators block) I just come up with level ideas but I mostly dont ever get them into the game, because of my other levels I need to work on just drag me behind because I work slow because I like my levels to look good and tidey. Which is kinda a bummer because once I finish a level I have another level that I put behind so I could finish the level I was working on before that level.2012-01-08 15:31:00

I'd say, don't do it.

Most times, our creators block is simply laziness in disguise.

I do it to. I have a level, The Dream Catcher, that I often run away from when it starts getting difficult. It requires tons of effects, and creating effects takes forever. Just endless testing, often, with hours/ days with nothing to show for it.

So, I while I'm creating, I think of something simple. I thought, I'll make a quick costume level. I had shown people my costumes, they kept saying, you should put them in a level. I thought it was something I had no interest in ever making a costume level.

Then, I thought, what if I tried to make one that was REALLY different. I figured, 5 costumes, how long could it take?

2 and a half months later...

Thing is, even those small projects can spiral out of control and take us away from our main project for a long time. Some of that is my fault. I took what could have been a simple level and added warp effects for no real reason other than I thought it looked cool. Then, I added a tutorial, which turned into this big movie.

In my experience, my "quick"detours and side projects almost always become an all out project. I thought Little Big Costume Effect would take 1 month, took 2&1/2. I thought Explorers would take 1 month, cause I had time off work, took 3 months.

So, you can do the side project, but personally, if you really want to finish the project, stick with it. If you get creators block on one part, work on some other part. Work on a costume for a character, or design your scoreboard, or take one piece of logic and determined to get that figured out.

Up to you.

Best of luck.

I say go for it. Do all the side projects and get distracted to your hearts content. It's about having fun, not necessarily finishing levels. Nothing fun about forcing yourself to work on a level if your not feeling motivated. Laziness really has nothing to do with it, LBP isn't a job. If a side project really catches your fancy and becomes a full blown level that you want to complete, that's a good thing not a bad thing.2012-01-08 17:14:00

Hmmm I see what yall mean, well maybe I will stick to this level then (the wack a mole level) which I started making concepts for x_o So this will most likely be a full on "Cute Vector Art Style" type of level which is somthing out of my comfort zone. Maybe its a good thing? making a diffrent type of art style and gameplay level wise could prob, bring fresh new ideas to my other project levels like the spider level and my chalkboy level.2012-01-08 18:36:00

Do things the way i do them. Just build whatever seems right at the time.

I have heaps of different projects going at the same time and also i am helping others with theirs constantly. As long as i am building something and creating something new i never suffer from creators block. Every time you move on from one level to another you are sure to come up with ideas or accidentally create something that will inspire you to go back to it again.

Believe me that this is true because i have 16 levels finished which i still constantly adjust and tinker with and at least 4 on another profile that are also completed. I also have a moon full of levels and random creations a lot of them are nearly complete and a lot arent even close. But every time one bores me i go to the next then i get bored of that and go back again to an old level.

Its just the way the creative mind works. If it was as simple as one at a time and never getting bored then it wouldn't be creative.

Listen to me. Work on one level at a time, although, any ideas you have about other levels write down.2012-01-08 19:54:00

Well maybe I will work on the 2 levels on the same day like I will work on this level (the wack a mole) for 1hr and my spider level for 1hr.2012-01-09 05:53:00

I think that your levels seem to ever so slightly miss that final level of polish.

Everything I have played of yours has been fantastic and there is is no question about your creating skills.

Going off and making other things is fine as it refreshes you, and helps you look back over your work. As long as you enjoy what you are doing any create style is fine.

Yeah, however, just be careful it doesn't become a habit. I see a lot of people who stop one project and start another. And that's fine, as long as you have the will power to not let this become a way of creating.

You know how to finish a level, so, it shouldn't be an issue. Just keep an eye out that it doesn't turn into a pattern of constantly starting, and never finishing.

/guilty

And it's incredibly annoying. I link part of it down to that I just make my levels as I go along with no prior planning and run myself into a hole, but other times I just sit there staring thinking what to make.

I do tons of planning and I still can't get anything finished enough to publish.

So..... it all depends.

If you really like the levels you haven't finished, and you want to share them with the world.... finish them.

If you feel your new project will be much more fun to play..... work on the new one.

I've started many projects I never finished, mainly because I realized eventually it wasn't going to be as much fun as it initially sounded. When I find a great idea and I become inspired, and it's easy to stick with it.

Incidentally, usually when I create something I build gameplay first based on simple looking objects, and see if it's fun... then I build the visuals around the objects. This way I can tell if it's really going to be worth all the effort before I put too much time into it.

XD This is my exact ritual! Now people can't call me crazy for making levels out of light matter and cardboard. Theres someone else out there that does the same too

I would just finish up whats most fun and perfect the concept of it til its how I imagined it or near that point.

I like my light matter and cardboard too. For fun I now use the cardboard from the Move pack but good ol' light matter has no equal.2012-01-12 08:46:00
