Should i republish Explorers?

Archive: 12 posts

Hello all,

I had published The Explorers about a month and a half ago, and it did pretty well. It was on Cool Pages for a little while, and by the time it faded off, it had gotten over a thousand plays. I consider that a success. The only reason I mention that is to point out that I'm not concerned with more plays.

I had beta tested it many times, and had others test the level, But it appears there was an issue with a score giver that allowed the person to continuously rack up points.

I had published the level right before going into the hospital for a surgery, where I was kept for 5 days. By the time I got back to LBP, the level was done with its Cool Page run, and had nice reviews etc.

It later was lucky enough to get Spotlighted.

So, everything went right, except that a few people spent a lot of time cheating and giving themselves astronomical scores. Now, usually I wouldn't care, but the level requires a lot of time to discover all the secrets, and a few people did and I feel like they should have those top spots on the scoreboard. They earned it. And anyone else in the future who plays it.

So, should I republish so all scores are legit? Of course I lose all those nice reviews from friends, and the Spotlight will no longer be linked correctly. Or, leave it as is and let the cheaters have their names on the scoreboard, but keep all current reviews and plays? What would you guys do?

Thanks.

It's sad some people cheated but I say leave it up and just update it so no more can do it. I really wish MM would just let us clear off our own level's scoreboards... *mew2012-01-05 01:30:00

Yeah, I updated it as soon as I got back from the hospital, but it was obviously too late.

Or..... re-balance the scoring to make a "normal" score match the higher scores currently on the scoreboard... in other words, make the unrealistically high scores realistic.2012-01-05 01:38:00

It does sound like big dilemma... on one side, unfair scores, on the other, all the reviews gone...
Personally, I wouldn't do it. I don't think people care about scores to this point. I wouldn't care if a few dozens of noobs cheated their way up in the socreboard over my score and everybody else's. If I got all the collectibles of a level I'd be satisfied with the completion of said level, not with a few numbers on a board. Besides, if you republish you're not only deleting the cheaters' scores, but also those of the people who completed the level fairly.

Just my 2 cents, the decision is yours. Has anyone given you a bad review or rating because of this?

Its a great level don't republish it . People will know who honestly did a great job on the level and who took advantage of a bug. I am so sorry I didn't notice while I was playing it.2012-01-05 01:47:00

No, it hasn't gotten any bad reviews because of it. It has boos, but the usual boo with no explanation.

I assume most people who get everything, but aren't on the top of the scoreboards, probably think they missed a lot. Which could cause people who are hardcover players to go back looking for more, when there isn't more.

I know you may be thinking, yeah right, people aren't going to keep coming back... I once had a level in LBP1, a small series called Rapid Rocket Race, and these two guys got in a competition trying to get the highscore. I kid you not, they were playing the levels hundreds of times trying to out do each other. One would beat the other by a fraction of a second and proclaim victory, just to have the other person come back an hour later with a score a fraction higher than that.

So, some people are hardcore players who really pride themselves on getting the high score, or finding all the secrets in a level. It's really only those people I feel I'm doing a disservice to. Most people are happy to play it and are happy with however they do in their first playthrough.

I just don't know.

Well, we all missed it. But ultimately its my responsibility to catch and fix all potential issues. If I hadn't been in the hospital I could have deleted and republished right away, but by the time I got back (a two day hospital stay turned onto five), it was too late.

Oh well.

CCubbage's method/suggestion is the best way to handle it.
Just be thankful the cheaters didn't max out their scores. (To a million or whatever the max is..)

Nice to see creators are thinking about these kind of elements.

By the way, I just posted a video reiew of Explorers in my sig.

Someone I've never met contacted me via PM on PSN and told me they posted a video on youtube of it. Turns out they did a review/playthrough for their youtube channel.

I thought it was pretty funny. If you've ever played the level you know it's a long level. His play through was a little over 20 minutes and he only found 2 of the 10 energy cells.

So, obviously, anyone who found all ten really put some time and effort into the level.

I'm one of those people who managed to find all the secrets in Explorers and I genuinely don't mind one bit that there are others with higher scores than me through a glitch. I had my fun exploring the level and I got to take my photo of the secret counter and post it. That's enough to satisfy anyone's bragging rights, lol! It would be a shame to lose the nice reviews and hearts from your friends so, although I really appreciate your concern for those who played your level without exploiting the glitch, I think you should leave things as they are.

Maybe you could put a short note in the level description or comments section saying that some of the highest scores were attained using a glitch that has now been fixed. That way everyone can see what has happened. But I'm not even sure that's necessary tbh.

Great level btw. I hope you still have plans to make the sequel. I want to see what happens after the cliff-hanger at the end of Part 1!

Yeh, other than leaving it, I'd say Cubbage's idea is the way to go rather than a re-publish. I reckon once people have taken the time to leave reviews, it's probably a bit naff to delete them, unless your level is majorly borked.2012-01-05 17:09:00

Deleting the level is not really a good option in my view. Also the problem of trying to re-balance with newer scores is that people will need to re-play the level. SO it almost destroys the reason for doing it... it's a great level so you could message the people you want to top the scoreboard so the can re-play.

IIRC you have a custom score display at the end, why not just incorporate a list of the people who cheated (or use a more friendly term).
