Tank Tread Testing (Bolt Stretch Theory)

Archive: 6 posts

Hi guys,

I have recently taken a fancy to tank treads but am beginning to lose my patience despite having a ton of it. I have tested over 100 pieces of track using different construction methods by hanging weights from them. I am looking for track that has as little stretch as possible because the bolt stretch is what causes treads to break most of the time.

Theories and results about things that make the track stretch less...

-Greater Mass (thins are worse and mass matters to a degree but adding bulk by turning a pill piece shaped track into a rectangle pieced shaped track decreases performance) *3 layer tracks seem to work better than most but some 2 layer tracks mysteriously work better than 3 layer tracks....

-More Pieces Glued Together per track link (tracks made out of more pieces but same shape / build method have equal stretch)

-Direction of gluing / lamination matters (does not matter but having at least 1 glue increases performance over purely bolted chains)

-Pill shapes out-perform square shapes (seems to be true in almost all cases despite rectangles have greater mass)

-Adding many bolts to a single spot (dose not work)

-Adding double bolts (i.e. bolting a three layer track in 2 places per link does increase strength over bolting in a single place)

-Rods and Strings (these can decrease stretch a lot but can cause lots of unwanted jittering)

-Glue a holographic chain to a normal chain (helps a tiny bit but gets very complex)

Sadly, after all this testing, one stupid lbp track shape does best. I am using the original lbp1 material and am wondering if it is different somehow. This track is not the biggest, heaviest or most bolted track but time and again it out performs the others.

After all of that, please, I beg of you. Someone out there must have a special design or know more about this issue. All I want are tiny tracks that can run at high speeds.... maybe too much to ask

NOTE: All tracks were built at 1 grid wide and 4 links long. Chains vary in length marginally but are positioned so i can easily see which one stretches more.

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried placing a material tweaker set to 'indestructible' on the treads to prevent them from breaking?2012-01-03 20:43:00

I found the best results were when using ovals with indents (for string attachments) and an indestructible tweaker on them... bolts were just too much trouble. Also the frame which the tracks are based around is paramount as it dictates where the tracks can move to.2012-01-03 21:20:00

Indi tweakers won't do anything.

The problem with treads in lbp is not that the metal breaks, the bolts break.

Real tank treads are steel bolted to steel. That does not stretch

- I have tried that indented oval shape you describe and agree that string can help a great deal.

- Did you use 0 length string between 2 flush surfaces was there more slack?

How about using Holographic chains, rods and normal chains2012-01-04 15:21:00

If you're set on using bolts perhaps a motor bolt or wobble bolt set to 0% strength will work better than just a regular bolt. I haven't tested this myself, though.
