A level based on Red Alert

Archive: 11 posts

At this moment there are two things you will be wondering:
1. "Who is this dude?"
2. "What is Red Alert?"

Well, yes, I'm a new user, but I'm very enthusiastic about LBP and I've already got the hang of Create Mode.

For the second question, the Red Alert series are RTS games published by Westwood (They are the makers of C&C, well, were). It's known for being wacky and depicting a goofy version of warfare. This, I think, could make for a great addition to the LBP universe.

Ahem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Red_Alert_series

Command & Conquer: Red Alert is a series of real time strategy video games set within the Command & Conquer universe. The series is well known for having some of the most quirky and outlandish units in the genre.

The Red Alert series takes place in an alternate timeline, created when Albert Einstein travels back to the past and eliminates Adolf Hitler in an attempt to prevent World War II from taking place. This plan indirectly backfires and results in an unchecked Soviet invasion of Europe by Joseph Stalin in the 1950s. The Stalin-led invasion of Europe serves as the backdrop for the first Command & Conquer: Red Alert game. Two expansion packs for Red Alert were released: Counterstrike and The Aftermath. New units, missions, multiplayer maps and music tracks were included in these expansions.

Now of course,I'm planning to recreate this by following the plot and recreating the weapons. I'll have essentially two levels, one Enemy (The Soviets) and one Allied (Err.. The Allies). I'll be more closely following the tech of the second game in the series. If you've played this game, unlikely, since it's very rare, you'll know there are many things in LBP that could replicate the technology in the series.

One thing I'm worried about. One of the sides is the Soviets, and since they were
*thundercrash*
EEEEEEBIL
*maniacal laughter*
Ahem, and since they were evil and did alot of things that should not be done, to say the least, popular media depicting them is often scrutinized. I'm worried that if I make a level revolving about you being a soviet soldier, I'll get moderated. So I wanna know what you guys thing of this situation.

I have indeed played C&C before. Still do. One of my favorite RTS games ever. I never actually played the original Red Alert. . .I started that series with Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge. I'm more of a Tiberium fan. I plan to get Red Alert 3 soon but most of my time is being spent on LBP for now. Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about a soviet side as long as you keep it within a LBP manner. Just make it more fun than serious.2008-12-28 09:34:00

Why, thanks for responding. I'm glad to see a fellow C&C fan around here.2008-12-28 20:41:00

I've played Red Alert to death and beyond back when it was released. Awesome game, it's really a shame what happened to Westwood.

On topic, I think this is a great idea. There are many buildings and vehicles that could be recreated in LBP, and I know I for one would feel a bit of nostalgia if I were to play a level where I'm walking through a Soviet or Allied base to avoid Tesla Coils, Guard Dogs and the like.

As for evil/violence, as near as I can tell problems mostly arise when it's graphically represented. Say, having a Mammoth Tank rolling over a group of people and leaving red blood stains behind... probably not a good idea. Having a group of wounded soldiers lying down with blood on them should also probably be avoided. As long as things are kept moderate it should be fine.

One thing I would suggest though is not to use any logos or names that are directly copyrighted in the game. It's annoying, but it's better finding creative work-around names for everything than not being able to publish the level at all.

Hope this helps.

More people know about this game than I thought.

But, thank you for helping me out with the moderation stuff. I didn't know you could get moderated for using copyrights... might be hard to make a Red Alert level without tellling people it is Red Alert.

Although, Imma have to ace the normal storyline an the MGS levels to get all the materials needed. I stink at plataformers, but I have motivation now.

Thanks all!

Noone'll moderate you, as long as the Soviets don't say 'let's go shoot some babies!' or 'fascism rules!'. Basically, don't promote what they do as good. Well, some people might report you, but hopefully common sense will triumph.2009-01-01 13:35:00

If you are directly copying someone's IP, it is within the owner of that IP's rights to request for your level to be pulled down, as you are breaching their rights.

There are two points to note of this:

Firstly, several IP owners have gone up to MM and requested to be "white listed", meaning they will never ever take down a level based on this IP. That list is a closely guarded secret as to who is on it.

Secondly, however, by it's very nature they will take down levels that are breaching IP rights and are not on their white list. It's not fair to people that own IP's and have not given permission for other people to blantently rip off their work, whether good or bad, and it's entirely within their rights to ask for such levels to be removed.

I suspect MM's and Sony's policy is to take down anything suspicious of breaching IP if they don't have them on the white list. It's not being like a dictatorship, it's about giving respect to the original IP owners.

---

So... anyway, it sounds like a great idea. Just don't be too obvious in your "inspiration".

:sad faec:

It's going to be hard making a Red Alert level without stating it's Red Alert....

But, neither EA nor westwood has copyrighted the names of the specific units, I believe >=D

You could just give them generic names, like "big tank" and "solider" and so on. That would be safest.

And despite the possibilities that LBP has to offer, I don't think it would be possible to make a 1:1 scale copy of the full red alert campaign. You would need to think exactly what you are going to do. It's one thing to have a theme, it's another to think about how to best implement a theme.

If you are just going to go through a base, well, it could be very generic indeed. Ah well, I'm sure you will come up with something. If you take the passion you have for a game and turn that into a passionate level, I am sure it will be good.

Of course I'm not making the full campaign.

As said before, I'm planning to have a level for the Soviets and Allies each. What I've come up woth until right now is that you'll be a soldier/spy combo that has to deal with base defenses, the more memorable troops from the game (Differet names, of course), and maybe put a little superweapon action in there. I've looked at all of this, and LBP has everything I need to make these things into a virtual reality.

Thanks for the advice though, as well as the confidence you have displayed for my contruction skills. I've come up with some nice alternate names, and I'm already starting to build some of the structures as well...
