My Castle Adventure - Be a rescuer ;)?

Archive: 20 posts

This is my first level that is designed as a platformer. My other levels were all survival levels, so yeah it's really my first try on making a story-based level. I didn't make the story too deep and focussed especially on the platforming part. I hope my level is challenging and that it doesn't have annoying parts. I would appreciate some feedback and I'm also willing to give the others feedback on their levels. A friend of my helped me at this level (Tijgerdp), she did the decorations, bubbles etc...

So yeah, please give it a play and give me some feedback. The feedback is really important to me because I want to know if my creations are 'well enough' to make more levels in the (near) future. Thanks already!

Ok, I've queued it again for tonight. I apologize for the lack of feedback last night. I was rushed playing the level and half asleep when I remembered to write to say that I played it. I don't remember giving anything I played last night an unhappy face, but I will check and correct.

From what I remember, I found it very hard to get out of the castle's collapsed gates. I know you provide a talk bubble to assist in what to do, but I couldn't seem to figure it out. This could just be me being a crappy player, but I kept having difficulty getting from the back-most layer (where you drop down) to the front layer (where the circles on fire are) without burning my bum on the center layer. I dove into the water to find the upwards arrow, but no escape there. Anyway, I will give it another shot tomorrow and hopefully be able to review the rest of the level later today!

WOW!

Ok, I (finally) figured out that you needed to use the seaweed to float the cage to open the gate and then was able to get to the rest of the level. Really incredible work, man. There were a few times I was a little confused past that, such as hiding the bouncy pads behind fire, but that was quickly figured out. Only one thing I would make more obvious (and this could definitely be JUST me), but I discovered dropping the drawbridge by accident. I kept shooting bombs over the gap to see if I could hit something I couldn't see and that's when I noticed I was blowing away part of the support structure for the bridge.

Other than that the theme and music fit very well together throughout the level. Love the castle look with the fire. Also might want to put more of those enemy sackbots there to blow up with the bomb helmet. (Whoever is burning down this castle must have a ton of minions, right? ) Maybe put some ever sackbots all in the flames as you are trying to put it out. That way there is more of a 'boss fight' feel towards the end, rather than just putting out fire. Just have the sackbots die by water blasts like the ones in story mode.

Either way, this was a great level, even if it was **** near impossible for me to figure out the seaweed thing in the beginning.

A short, but fun level, but there are some things that were a little frustrating. In the first tower when you get down the bottom and have to blow up the barrels if you die you re-spawn on the same layer as the danger so if you jump back down you die again. The water swimming worked well, but having to take the little thing through without any understanding was a little strange. If you used something similar before this part then the player your understand the value of dragging it through the spinning spikes. As it stands, a lot of people may ignore it, and be frustrated by having to backtrack, unless it is intentional, but then it needs to be made clearly intentional.

Anyway the next section with the grapple seems quite tight, as you packed it in between the floor of the next part, I like the idea of looping back, but you miss an opportunity of really playing with the enclosed space and the grapple, the actual swinging doesn't offer much challenge but could become quite an interesting section if you think about trying to cross a tight space.

The next time you encounter water, it kills you, which goes agains what you taught the player in the first section, and this continues as you get the helmet and water is your friend again, but then to add to the confusion fire becomes your friend as you have to jump into it to use the bounce pads.

As a whole the section works but I do think that you could put more though into it, like the helmet puts out the fire that then activates a steam cloud that makes you bounce up.

Or instead of gas in the water some oil that is on fire...

Anyway it was fun and it all worked without any bugs, but maybe just try and make it feel more consistent with the gameplay elements.

I finally got to play this and liked it. There are some key places that I think Mr. Fusion and Bigtuna covered pretty well so I won't reiterate what they said. Good job on this and keep it up.2012-01-07 07:08:00

Thanks for the great feedback guys! I'll see what I can do with the water - fire - grapple things. I'm defiantly going to give a hint in the section with the key and the spike barrels. And I'll try to solve the 'spawn'-issue in the first tower. Thanks ! ^^

Edit:

Did a small update; added some instructions for the key and I tried to solve the 'respawn-die' thing in the first castle tower...

@Z1091990

When did you play it (my level?). A couple of hours ago I updated it with more obvious hints at the 'spike' part. Give it a replay and tell me if the hint is finally 'obvious' enough or if it isn't . Thanks in advance!

Edit: I took a quick look at LBP.me and I've seen that I updated the level after your walkthrough. Maybe you could give it a second try ? I would appreciate some feedback of you (after what I've seen in your "Ruins of Kalahr"-level . Thanks !

Did you already try it out yet? Fixed a couple of 'small' bugs (sack boys in the beginning of the level have better animations etc...)2012-01-09 12:54:00

Thhanks for the feedback, much appreciated!
Played your level a couple of times and enjoyed it. I like the overall plot device of progressing through the tower to save the queen. Some people may succumb to some quick deaths if they don't think ahead (such as falling into fire etc.) But I don't mind that personally. Having managed to blow the barrels I entered the underwater section, the object you have to carry past the underwater-rotating -spikey-wheels of doom could do with some high lighting, maybe add an invisible light to make it clearer? i liked the switch of gameplay to putting out fire but woulod add some more effects, lighting etc to really ramp up the sense of danger in that section. Overall good job dude!

H?h? thanks for the feedback, I will add the (invisible) lightning in the water section and I'll add something to the 'dangerous' ending-part as some of you already had some remarks to make it more difficult. Expect an update soon! 2012-01-11 12:21:00

Hey Cpt Yanni, just played this and it was a nice adventure, everything went smoothly, no problems whatsoever. Really enjoyed the underwater section, although it was pretty hard to take the key through the spikey wheels.
Loved the pacing where you are on battle at one moment, blowing the invader troops and some buildings with it, and then all of a sudden you are putting down the fires to save the princess! It's all quite well done! Congratulations!

Thank you very much ! Sorry for my late reaction but at this moment I have exams (University) so yeah, I don't have a lot of time to spend over here. But I promise you that I'll give your level a playthrough(and feedback). Btw; Expect an update sooner or later with a more difficult boss battle at the end (some sackbots that are running towards you or something...). Thanks already for the great feedback guys!2012-01-20 09:53:00

This level was pretty cool. It had a nice little story, decent visuals and the difficulty was spot on. It wasn't too hard and it wasn't too easy. It got me thinking in a few parts and that is what I like out of levels. Overall I think you did a fantastic job, but there are some minor issues I have with the layout of the castle. Nothing too serious and are probably just based on my own personal preference. I would rate this 4 stars.

Good Job!

Hi everyone. Like I said, I was going to use the feedback that you guys gave. Today I'm bringing you (together with the other creator of my level) the second version. It has some small updates like better lightning in the dark places and the 'greatest' update is the "boss-fight" near the end. We've placed there some guards that will attack you when you get near to them. So yeah, more difficulty added at the last section (= more fun ? ). So yeah, go a head, give it another play through and I'm eager to get some more feedback.2012-01-21 18:00:00

Quite good level. But water parts were annoying, because floating platforms are too lightweight and lead you to death in the water if you won't land at the middle.2012-02-03 09:21:00
