Set the Scene... Stage III RESULTS!

Archive: 182 posts

Set the scene is simple: make a level based soely on choreographed events. You can make anything from a Rube Goldberg machine to a level full of close calls. The sky's the limit!

Rules

1. The entire string of events must be triggered by only one base action.

2. There is no limit on switches or any other building material. Use what you want to!

3. Make sure it is actually a level so we can play it ourselves. It doesn't have to be a platformer or any other specific type, but we have to be able to try it for ourselves.

4. All level mechanics must be visible. No hiding anything out of view.

5. Post using the following format and fill in any text in *asterisks*:

*level title* - *forum username*/*psn*
Description:[indent]"*level description by author if available*" - *author's username*

6. Have fun!

Rewards
Each submission will earn 250xp automatically, but the winners will earn extra, so put your heart and soul into it!
1st place: 1000xp

2nd place: 750xp

3rd place: 500xp

Official Deadline: January 31, 2009
(I will end it at 6 PM that day PST *Pacific Standard Time*)

I have an old 3 stage rocket that has a very complex launch system which starts off with just one button press.

Although one could argue that the lift is a seperate part, it's really one object, with half of the systems powering the rocket built into the lift.

I haven't published though, I was hoping to do more polishing and hiding more of the mechanics, because as far as I know it used a fair amount of relatively unique systems...

But I guess I could try and uncover the stuff, do some final quick polishing and then submit it.

I knew I kept that old rocket lying around for some reason. I'll see what I can do about finishing it off and then publish it for this.

I do have one clarifying question though... one could technically argue that entering the lift to enter the rocket is a seperate move to actually initiating the rocket itself. Steering the rocket is controlled by the player moving back and forth, but no switches are actually involved in doing so.

But would it count though for this contest? Would it be a judges call? If necessary I can make it all one action I am sure, it would just need a few extra adjustments to do so.

Well, I went and fixed up my rocket. Maybe I'll make it give off some point bubbles at the end of it.

There is only one button pressed. The lift to get into it is on a motion sensor, the button is really obvious and in the control module, and the thing is steered by the player moving left and right.

I think it sounds like a big scene to me. I've tried to make it a bit dramatic with lighting and sound effects as well.

I've left all the magnetic switches and sensors and pistons and rockets and timers and all that visible. The only stuff I've hidden is non-essential magic mouths and most sound elements, because they look ugly. You can even tell what material almost everything is made out of as it's all default.

But yeah, the wirings a shocker. It's an 8 page document to build it.

So the official entry is:

*The TSR - Three Stage Rocket* - Elbee23/Elbee23

there is not official date because we do not have enough people in yet, but i am thinking somewhere around the 20th, i am just saying that if we do not have enough people in the contest by the 20th then not all of the prizes get handed out, and nobody wants that, so the unnoficial date is the 20th.

Cheers!

EDIT: The Official Deadline: January 20, 2009

i will edit this in to the top of this thread.

Could I suggest speaking to the appropriate people about getting this contest done up and put as a front page news post?

I just don't think it's got enough exposure at the moment. This thread has only been read 60 times.

Now that a rough deadline has been set and a first entry has been put in, you really need more exposure. That's why I suggest someone making a front page news post version of this.

If they don't know about the contest, they can't compete, especially if they don't have time to build a level by the due date.

good point my friend, but hey CC and i put this together, If you look i can not, post a thread in this forum, so CC moved it for me, and we set everything up. I can send word to him about it, but just know that i do not expect it to happen, but if it does, then way and hoorah to us, but thank you Elbee, I am glad you are concerned

hmmm i have a level i think may qualify...its my zombie onslaught... when you trip this sensor in the barn... it starts a machine i have going in the background...actually i have two of the same machine running now one had a delay switch so it started after the first one. and they spawn the zombies at a increasing rate...i also have a machine that changes the day time and different flood lights on and the environment a little... not sure if that would qualify2009-01-02 18:35:00

Maybe after the Treetop Escape competition finishes it could make front page news. There are not many days left until that happens. That way we get continuous competitions!

You might also want to have a reconsider about the deadline. At the moment it's fine, but if people don't know about it until a few days time, that won't leave too much time to create. It will be over a fortnight though, so I guess it's not too bad... ah well, I'll leave all that stuff to the contest organisers.

One more thing, I'm still updating and tweaking my entry. The contraption is still there, but I'm continuously adding minor improvements for things like sound effects, layout and graphical fluff. I hope to add a scoring system as well to make it a bit more replayable and to encourage people to finish it properly.

So in short I would not expect people to have entered to have not completely have done everything they can to their entry, not until the final day.

well just connect everything up, and just set up a button instead, (it makes it easier, for us to see when everything is going to start to activate) and makes sure it is only one switch that starts the events, and maybe you could combine all of your contraptions in to one big one, and make like a super one that you could submit here (just a nack of advice )

@Elbee, oh and that would be great, to have happen, oh and i think i may win the "Treetop Escape" contest the only score i was not able to beat was Linque's but he is the creator so his does not really count, i am only about 1000 below his but i am not going to try again unless i have to, so currently i hold the top spot with about 3000 ahead of second place.

i pretty much have to have two machines but they are linked to the same beginning sensor switch....i mean the night and day thing isnt linked up to it. if it absolutely had to be i could do it its not a big deal. i would just make a permanent switch on "on/off" linked up to the sensor switch

Well, I think exactly what "scene" is set is very variable. Mine is a very complex rocket which is fired by one button press.

Others might be making a slide projecter animated film.

Still others might make a Rube Goldberg machine, where you have one thing activate, and it sets off a huge chain reaction to do a simple task. There are all sorts of video examples of those in real life.

I'm sure there are plenty of other possibilities as well.

By the way, I've just given a major overhaul to my rocket. It's got some graphical changes, yes, but the guiding lights are a WHOLE lot clearer now, and there is a scoring system included as well to encourage people to be as accurate as they can be. I still have further plans to tweak it up, and yes, it's still all one button press.

exactly but the number one rule is, ONE EVENT STARTER, so basically, once you press the button and set it off, you can have no more interference with the machine, you can just fly around and watch, walk if your machine is like that, just make sure we can see what is going on.

umm... well you see the thing is, you just can not have any interference with it the actual actions of the machine, but if you can pull that off Then GO FOR IT. well now that i think of it, minigames, such as the Metal Gear Solid one were pretty good, but we just need to be able to see what in the world is going on. It would be a shame for you to create something that awesome and we do not know how it works.

...So it's all about ONE switch?
Are you only allowed to press the switch once? Or can you do it many times?
Or could you have a huge mechanism that has many switches, but you don't interact with the machine any more than pulling some switches/buttons?
Bit confused sorry

In the examples we have, that of a rocket that launches with one button press, a film slide show started with a player started switch, and a Rube Goldberg machine, something that has one event that starts off a massive chain event to do another seemingly simple event...

The key point is that it's all one starting point, and then a whole lot of complex automation occurs which is pretty much outside of a players control.

If you were to be continually pressing a switch, that would imply a whole lot more control than what I think RAINFIRE is getting at.

My rocket has a player sensor lift to get into the control module, but in that module is just one button. You press the button, and then there is no further interraction from the player. They can move left or right in the control module, but it's not a sensor controlled flight, they are just changing the center of gravity for the machine and hence affecting the flight path.

You can jump up and down on the button as much as you want, but I've rigged it so it's all just one button press and some very, very complex machinations outside of the players control making the rockets fire and the stages split up and so on.

I think that's what RAINFIRE is getting at. Something complex, a scene if you will, but it's all just one thing done by the player and then the rest of it is pretty much done by the machine itself.

RAINFIRE should clarify this though, but that's my take on the events. I see it as a way to push the boundaries of both machine automation and creativity of events basically out side of a players control.

hahaha, nice job, could not have said it better myself, lol, but yes exactly what you said, and here would be a simple example of lets say a rub goldberg machine, or wait... you want to know about a minigame, ok, so in all of them that the developers give you, you press a SINGLE button, and there are no other switches around that control the machines movements, like the meatal gear solid one, you just hit a button and the machine opperates, and then after that you are just basically having fun IN that machine, but all it does, is rock the things back and forth, shoot the plasma balls, emit, the soldier guys, and emit the things when they are destroyed, not very interesting if you ask me, but if you set up a whole elaborate rub goldberg machine... well then you got yourself another story. EXAMPLE: you jump on a button which makes a club fall and swing, hitting a ball, which whichts a spoon which hits another ball, it rolls down the ramp, and activates a rocket...etc. So you see what i mean, you do not do anything past hitting that button and it just runs on its own.

Cheers!

Plus, I could use the experience. XD

No worries.

I agree with the sentiment of Clank. This is a great opportunity to publish for the first time for those who have not done so yet, or for those of us like myself that have old half done projects that were sitting on the back burner.

The TSR rocket I created was designed and built about a month ago, though not with all the details and polish that is seen on it now. It was approaching a point where it could be published, but I was side tracked by other projects at the time. You can follow it's progress in my blogs if you want a timeline of it all, but my blogs are always long.

This contest though allowed me to blow the dust off it and polish and publish it in a justifiable manner. I am sure other great creators out there have similar half baked things that haven't seen the light of day. This contest could be a good excuse to see side projects people have been working on, and allow them to polish them to a high level.

And in reguards to mini-games, a lot of them are one button press things. the jetpack one, the skipping one, the jumping down the endless platform ones... all of those are one thing to start it and then you are off. Sure, some are more fiddly, but all of those sound like they fit into the rules.

But as for "scenes" though... well, they may be kind of boring. Infinite loop things can, by very nature, go on for ever, and therefore may get tiring after the 5th hour. But that does not mean they can't be entered though. Sometimes the machinations behind those things are quite cool indeed.

But I'm sounding like a competition judge again. RAINFIRE needs to make those comments official in reguards to rule definitions.

Well Elbee, you are right on the dot with this one my friend. Yes minigames can be entered, and as for the infinite loops, yes those can get boring when looking at a machine. but the main thing i we are after is the part where you get to see how it works, and all of that, we need to see EVERYTHING that is going on, you know all of the cogs, the switches, the pistons, the bolts, even the music, ANYTHING that is related to that first button press, and for anything started by another button...well... yeahh...NO but as i have said like a gazillion times (just trying to cement in your head) ONE BUTTON.

Thank you Elbee for your help again, and as for contest judge...I am not making any promises

I've noticed that the scoring level competition has officially ended, now might be a great time to ask CC or the mods to get this into a front page posting.

You might want to emphasis that this a great change for new creators to publish their first levels or for experienced creators to showcase some of their creations that they have on the backburner.

yeah, if i do not have enough entries by the day before the closing date, i am extending it and asking for more publicity from CC for this contest, personally i think it would be a great site contest seeing as how it will promote new builders to create something and it would bring some ideas out of closets for the experianced creators. Really, it is a WIN & WIN situation, but i hope that people come and post entries, and if not i hope i do not have to close the contest down.

i will help you out with any questions you have, The point is that if you were to run through a normal level you would activate all kinds of things but these things are not linked. So basically you want to link as many things together as you can in a string and make it look spectacular and the winner gets a points bonus.

are you sure this is the right place for that? EDIT: I have to say, that creating something like this is really fun, i just started on creating a rub goldberg machine (with a whole bunch of events, well actually *counts in his head* 8 events goin on in order with only one button press, although i want atleast 2 more to finish it off, I am going to post the level *will not enter here* but somewhat as an example, but only in the beta stage and I will post the name of the level soon. *keep in mind, do not interfere with the machine or else the events do not occur correctly and it is not pretty yet, as it is only in the beta stage*)

I was going to enter this and I had a great level full of close call after close call but for some reason you can't have to many triggers attached to one piece of material. Well I didn't purposefully overload any material it just happened that my level was one rather big material and the start level trigger got deleted so when I went to test it it wouldnt work because nothing was doing what it was supposed to. It was really cool though and almost done.

Me too, this is actually a really fun contest, i am finishing up my rube goldberg (well atleast the events) Soon, and then i will add jetpacks and the scoreboard, along with bubbles, and then i will publish as a beta, and then comes the making everything pretty. I am having loads of fun doing this, This one will just be an example to all of you guys. but have fun making your own contraptions.

Cheers!

Ok, so i made a giant paintball gun that is completely activated by grabing a grab switch once. Does that count for the contest?2009-01-20 03:57:00

no the grab switch is on a one-shot setting, but the gun only shoots once per grab.2009-01-20 04:51:00

ummmm yeah i could do that fairly easily. I just can't really think of what to make it do once it shoots something.2009-01-20 04:58:00

As an example you could shoot a gun, which shoots a gun, which shoots a gun... which eventually spells out some letters with all the paint balls flying around. I'm sure there are many other things that could be done as well. 2009-01-20 05:20:00

NICE THOUGHT ELBEE! I Like it. but yet again what i am invisioning in my mind. I am working on my rub goldberg machine, but i had to start all over (well almost) because that no saving on the profile bug got me and not all of what i had was there, but it is amazing what you can do when you know what your doing beforehand and actually have experiance doing it, i redid what took me 6 hours in about 1 hour and 15 minutes and saved it in 4 different craters (using save as) so i think i will be good, now all i have to do is to finish it off tomorrow, with the final, door, scoreboard, and jetpacks. and then it is time to publish as a beta and an example for you guys. So hope that i can finish soon.

Cheers!

Since the date is now 31 Jan, i think i got some spare time to give something like this a shot, but i do have a few questions.

You say the "Chain reaction" has to be activated by pressing 1 button, but, can you still use magnetic switches and stuff? Cuz then u'd actually be able to do quite alot of things, and not just a physics based rub goldberg machine.

My last question is about the fact you say you have to play the level. But, do you mean just walk frmo left to right while this chain reaction is going on? Or Have like a timed chain reaction, which intercepts sackboys as they run. (Like traps or something, all play-tested so they appear right when the sackboy gets there )

THose were just my questions, thanks in advance.

Ok everyone, IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT, my example level is now up. Please do not play, but copy it to your moon to see how it works (the jetpack is too slow to keep up) So copy it to your moon and then jump on the button, and zoom out and then just follow the events as they happen to see an example. This should help most of you who still have questions. Just type in my name... and look for the LBPC logo as a patch, it should be in North America too. It is called "My Rub[e] Goldberg Machine" (ignore the "e" i forgot to put that in the title, i just want you guys to know, that that is the correct way to spell it)

Hope this answers your questions.

Cheers!

EDIT: @Tommy,
1. you can still use all the magnetic switches you want.
2. Well we want to see what is going on, so either alow us to copy it to our moon so we can see it... or let us use a jetpack to see everything... the bottom line is all we want to do is see ALL of what you did. But as far as what you do with it... let your immagination run wild.

Cheers!

Man I am probably gonna lose. I mean I like my level alot and all but it is really short.
Instead of making a Rube Goldberg Machine that you watch or whatever its called I decided to make one where you are the things that keeps the machine going.
All you do in it is hit a button and don't move anymore.
It is pretty cool but like I said it is very short.
Well I don't know if I want to publish it yet because someone might steal my ideas or something.
Is it ok if I just tell you the name of it Rainfire?
After the contest is over I will make it a copyable level so people cant steal it before then in case they find out the name.

Do not worry, none of us will steal it if you do not ask us too because we are cool like that and we care. Don't worry we are really nice. wow these rube goldberg machines are going to be popular (i would suggest for atleast one of you to try and break away from the crowd to stand out more and get that extra boost of creative output to impress the judges, unless of course you think that your rube goldberg machine is the best one there, and I hope you all with think that )

Sorry, but i have yet another question -.-"

Is this competition based on the technique of the machine/contraption?

What i mean is, will you look at al the chain reactions or do the visuals play a part too? I think that would be a downfall for a few creators (I myself too, i'm real bad at making good looking things

Well, just another question

I'm not all that great at making anything look pretty because every level I make is done 100% in the small grid so things tend to be precise instead of cool looking.

I did poor my heart and soul into this and have done things that I have not done before in the grid making my things look slightly cooler.

I hope yall will enjoy when I release it tommorow.

On a side note, I totally didn't plan when I was going to release it but I am kinda happy it is being released with 7 days left lol I love 7. You should see my pod, and my tongue. I have a 7 tatooed on my tongue as a sack person of course.

well the only reason i sometimes requested things to be copyable is becuase well... sometimes the things everything does is a little too fast for a jetpack so you need your intense flying skizzles to see what is happening and then to see the mechanics in action. I look forward to this. i will play the ones that were entered after yesterday morning today. AND i look forward to it. I am so glad that you guys are getting this in to it

You could make two versions of the level, one open and not copyable, the other locked but copyable. I wouldn't want people ripping off others' ideas.

It might also be a challenge to try and make it small enough to be seen on screen. You can use the camera zones to zoom out the camera, of perhaps put sackboy on some sort of moving system which puts him to the best viewing angle.

Be creative!

Sweet levels everyone, keep it up and do not forget to try your best with the lighting (it includes the fog settings, the the background settings, the fog color, and also use other lights in your popit and experiment with the colors to see what would look best in the setting that it is in. this is primarily what makes a level look good), and do not forget to use a few different materials, and stickers to make your place look better and that little difference could be what it needs to put you over the top with the judges.

Cheers!

hey guys i want you to make this as impresive as you can make it, you can still re-enter and republish, just go back and delete your entry in this thread, on the 31st, at 6 PM i will go through this thread post by post and look for entries and post them in the top post from there we will go on with the judging and we should have results in the next few days, so only when i post all of the entrents on the main post will your submissions be made official, so basically you have all the time you want until the deadline to edit and resubmit, just one rule, when you resubmit, you need to delete your first submission.

Yep, but i am keeping the way that we will judge them and who will judge them to myself for the time being, but yes i will post them up there in the first post when the final deadline comes upon us. At 6 PM Pacific Standard Time I will look through this thread, and take any submissions in the correct format and post them up in the first thread, that is how i am going to do it, then in the next few days you will see who has won.

Ok since you have not been here long, I just want to tell you to always read the first post of a thread, especially if it is a contest like this one so you see all of the rules. There is a format that is in the first post, Please use that format to submit your entry early. I know everything is right there, but when i look through it on Saturday, i may miss or accidentally skip over your entry because it was not in the right format, so please do yourself a favor and enter with the correct format.

Oh and by the way, that level i made as an example (REALLY BASIC) was not an entry, and if it were, would have been much better than that i have to say. If you really want to see my level where i am using the general concepts here. You can check out my projects thread It is called "The Puppetteers" and it is in the Projects section. i am currently only working on the story, but it will evolve as time goes on. you know what, better yet. Here is the link Here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=8035). Besides i could not enter anyway, it would not be fair to the people that entered since i made the contest

That sounds cool [old man here] I'LL check that out.How do i get to the projects.@RAINFIRE or not.Man i love LBP.

The Projects (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47) (just click on the blue) section of these forums is in the Creative Juices Section (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=58) (just click on the blue) and in the Projects section is the project i am working on labled The Puppetteers (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=8035) (again just click on the blue)

But anyway, enough about that, this is not the place for it, keep up the good work on those entries, and keep making them as good as you can up till the deadline.

Cheers!

Question: Can the "one base action" noted in the first thread, be just entering the level? Thank you.

yep... anything. just as long as there is ONLY one base action, although problems with this is, will the player know what to do?, and all of the stuff that goes with that, or you could just put it on a timer for when you enter the level, and a timer will determine when the thing will start after you enter. Hope you can pull off your idea.

I am sure, i am enjoying it myself hint hint wink wink. but try to keep it down, or else you guys might get infractions for being off topic (just a friendly reminder, although i do not see why you are being of topic... >_>) anyway, just as a note for everyone. All that matters is that you try your best. Good Luck!

Im almost done but one snag. I cant get the magic mouth to work, by on the scoreboard. Is that something that wont work? Its the last message to the player on my set the scene level. If this off topic I apologize. Thanks.

put it in the area in front of the scoreboard on some sort of wall or soemthing. I think once you enter the score board then any magic mouhts wont work because they want you to focus on the scoreboard instead of pressing O to exit the message.2009-01-28 18:56:00

Still no go. I can do without it but I wanted one final message. Thanks for trying to help though

set it up so you activate it before you enter the scoreboard area. and then it will work, just not on the scoreboard at all. You can not activate a magic mouth while in the scoreboard area soooo have it happen before you enter the scoreboard. Hope that helps

Yes I tried that but due to the nature of my level theme you are traveling too fast to read the message I guess because even when its positioned before the scoreboard area it doesn't activate where you can read it, if at all. I can just do without it. Thanks for the help.

if the message goes away because you've left it behind then put a cutscene camera on it.

This post (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7768) talks a bit about different magic mouth issues and ideas on how to solve them. You can always start a new thread in the help section and get some feedback about technical issues there. It might be a better place to post. 2009-01-29 03:53:00

I read somewhere from someone here, that "the creation tools hate me!" I can identify with that. I tried to make a Rube Goldberg level but never got enough cooperation out of my tools to get all the tweaks just right. So instead I am submitting something NOT Rube Goldberg until I get more experienced.

Official submission:

*Daryl and Daryl-The Norwood Brothers* mrjoeyman/mrjoeyman

Description: Just go in and watch. (if by some stroke of bad luck the level doesn't proceed to fruition, please replay)

I completely forgot about this until 2 days ago and I wanted to try and throw something together.
I've been trying for them 2 days whenever I have had a chance to get a level together, but I am running out of time and what with the missus close and the imminent arrival of our new baby today or tomorrow. I have got to just finish it off and make an ending and I have not have a chance to add any decoration or any of the thin layers to make it actually look like a finished level. DARK MATTER EVERYWHERE lol

But I'll see if I can do this in a while if I get a chance and submit it just how it is

When do we know who won?

The contest only just finished today. I'd imagine the judges need to go and try out all the entries, do some deliberations and debating... and then we find out.

So I guess in a few days.

We have another official site contest lined up soon after this one dies down. We will be releasing it soon.

It will involve creating as well, but that won't be the only part of the contest. Let's just say it's a little bit different.

You'll have to wait and see.

I'm so gutted that I took so much time in the last 2 days of this comp to do a level and I couldn't get on to the forums to submit my entry as I had to stay at the inlaws the night before the deadline and then had to go to the hospital early that morning.
OH well, least I got a level out of it and I'll make it better now I have more time and republish it

If anyone feels like playing it anyway it's called Golf Ball Adenture by ME oooDORIENooo
