Sad state of cool pages
Archive: 9 posts
I'm not sure this post belongs in the help section but I will start here since many of the most experienced players and creative thinkers on LBP view these posts first. I have noticed the slow degradation of the cool pages to the point where 3 of the top levels right now are: 1. I'm sexy and I know it - A recording of a song that completely void of any creative thinking and entirely inappropriate. 2. Grand Theft Auto - Ok lots of people like this game and the level itself is fairly well done and isn't overly violent but still it's GTA on LBP? Something doesn't add up here. 3. Sackboy's first love - a short, pointless "movie" featuring a recently creator censored love scene involving a pop can. My 10 year old son played this level and actually filled a good grief report because even though he is at the age where stuff like this is entertaining, he is smart enough to realize that this garbage doesn't belong on LBP, which is primarily played by kids. The level remains on the top 10 in cool pages even after multiple grief reports have been filed. This is what I find scary and why I posted this in the help section. What if this level contained extremely offensive pictures or voice recordings, would it still take days or weeks to be removed from the LBP universe? Probably, and that is scary. It bothers me personally as I have spent about 500+ hours slaving in create mode to create games that I think are fun, original and appropriate for kids to play. My one published level has only had a modest 50 or so plays in the 4 months since I published it and mostly great reviews/comments. I am thankful for the plays but when I see new levels getting thousands of plays in a day on cool pages, it makes me wonder if the problem lies with how the cool pages work or is this really the fault of LBP players for giving these bad levels plays and yays and keeping them on the cool pages so the good levels never have a chance. My opinion on the 6 million levels right now = 5 million are copied, 1 million are original to some degree, and of that 1 million maybe 10,000 are actually worth playing. Of these 10,000 or so great original levels by authors who put in the time and effort, less than a handful end up near the top of the cool pages. Anyone can record a popular song, copy a popular level or create something offensive that gets noticed (any publicity is good publicity, how many people played sackboys first love just to see what the controversy is? I did.) Anyway it really bothers me as a long term creator and makes me not want to spend time creating amazing games and levels since I doubt they can compete with the hyped up horrible levels littering the cool pages. And that's my rant of the day. With that said its time to go scrap my epic multi-level alien invasion FPS, 8-bit Jackal and Mario games and work on my new level, Sackboy h**ps a cardboard box.. | 2011-12-30 19:02:00 Author: Death_with_an_H Posts: 72 |
it makes me wonder if the problem lies with how the cool pages work or is this really the fault of LBP players for giving these bad levels plays and yays and keeping them on the cool pages so the good levels never have a chance. The system could be better. The cool pages could be divided into categories and the criteria levels have to fill could be more sophisticated than mere plays and yays. Levels that have received positive feedback but few plays I feel should be placed on a rota under a category like "hidden gems" for instance and circulate for more 1 week. This current 1 week limit where it's either make or break for a level to get exposure is a big part of the current problem, I believe. That said we do have lbp.me and other tools in-game to find levels, but it's up to the community to use them. | 2011-12-30 21:45:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
While I do agree with the underlying concern of you post there are a few things I would like to point out. Firstly, your name is not searchable viewable via LBP.me, secondly you posted a F4F thread about your level but it doesn't seem that you actually provided feedback on other people's levels. You also don't seem to play other people's levels... unless they actually look bad and you play it to boo it. I just played your stage and it has some very solid logic. I can't stand not having a reverse crosshair though so it was really difficult. I think that the whole thing is a little slow but the logic as I mentioned is very impressive. If it wasn't exactly boring, but I would have like it to build a bit faster to a frantic pace. However back to my original point, and using the example of music... you have released one song, in a sea of songs and have sat back and waited for it to be a hit. The reason terrible songs make it over yours is probably because the band is more active in advertising their stuff than you. My recommendation is to stop playing the bad stages yourself (especially just to boo it), and market what you have built more effectively. Don't look at the cool pages; support the LBPC community and play a whole page of level showcase stages and leave feedback on them, maybe hit up two pages of F4F stages. Make some friends on the site, and hopefully this will create more buzz for your upcoming stages. Cool pages is just an algorithm... you can get on the cool pages with like 5 plays and a few yays. If more people on these forums instantly jumped on and played levels from the Showcase thread as soon as they were published then these would naturally push junk out of the cool pages. A lot of individuals complain about the cool pages, but as a group we can force change by playing the showcase levels. | 2011-12-30 22:11:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |

Just have to point out, names are searchable if you include @ before the username as for this thread, I agree partially, sure the cool levels could be better but looking at lbp past they have been in worse states than present, and as mentioned above, lbpc has a wealth of levels advertised on a weekley basis Regards Dave | 2011-12-30 22:24:00 Author: ForgottenEnigma Posts: 1414 |
Are the cool pages really THAT bad? I mean H4H and P4P litter the Cool levels pages, but that just wrong. Meh, MM will remove the innapropiate levels and everything on the cool levels page will be back to its own annoying, noobish state. And that's my rant of the day. Does that mean there's more to come every day? >_> Sackboy h**ps a cardboard box.. like I said before: That's just messed up. | 2011-12-30 22:58:00 Author: nysudyrgh Posts: 5482 |
Most of the supposed "Cool Levels" are not really cool. I don't check them out anymore. | 2011-12-30 23:01:00 Author: SebasSBM Posts: 159 |

Something that I think a lot of people overlook, with so much content to choose from only the easiest to click on will be played. I tried to search @death_with_an_h in game and the results were for a lot of other "death_" names... I know that searching @Mr_Fusion never got to my stages at first... it does now though. Maybe because I have more stages published I guess. *shrugs* | 2011-12-30 23:26:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |

Firstly, your name is not searchable via LBP.me, secondly you posted a F4F thread about your level but it doesn't seem that you actually provided feedback on other people's levels. I'm not sure why my name is not searchable, I have been on LBP.me for a while now. I did play at least 4 levels from F4F and provide some (hopefully) helpful feedback 4 or 5 months ago when I first published my level. I think the F4F system works great and I plan to use it more. Many levels I played and enjoyed and gave quick praise since I wasn't able to come up with any feedback that hadn't already been stated. "You also don't seem to play other people's levels... unless they actually look bad and you play it to boo it." I have played a lot of levels between LBP1 and 2 and the move pack, many brand new levels that look interesting or innovative. I usually use this forum to find good levels that aren't on the cool pages. My son also plays a ton of levels but usually from the cool pages which is what prompted this whole post in the first place. I was just disappointed to see what is popular at this time for a kids game. I know playing these levels even to boo them encourages them in a sense, but sometimes you don't know a level is bad until you play it simply because you assume it is highly ranked on the cool pages for a good reason. Obviously this isn't always the case. Thank you this is very helpful feedback for me. I have been planning to add an inverted control option and there is so much more already done and planned for the first actual level. As for the pace, I know it is kind of slow that has been the biggest complaint and that the machine gun is underpowered or shots seem delayed hitting targets. This is all useful feedback that will help me make a better level that is more fun and appealing. Thanks again, I will take your advice and ignore the cool pages and continue to play the hidden gems and showcased levels. Now if only the mainstream casual lbp player would think this way too.. | 2011-12-30 23:39:00 Author: Death_with_an_H Posts: 72 |

I thought everything else worked great, the bullet speed and firepower was fine, I actually liked the delay as it was more about tracking a target and firing ahead of it, a nice skill game. I just kept pushing the sticks the wrong way. There is nothing wrong with starting slow, but I do think it would benefit from a faster ramp up of 'danger' | 2011-12-31 00:32:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
