Do We Try Too Hard?

Archive: 10 posts

We all love LBP 1 and 2 and nearly all of the creative players enjoying it, but sometimes I feel like we expect too much from each other. If there's a level now with the default floor showing, it really drives people away. Back then, in the early days of the game, that probably wasn't a huge problem. There was a couple of levels that I really enjoyed and that were very fun, but they got downrated because most people said the levels were ugly. So many things these days are "too easy to create", it's so hard to impress. I understand, we've been here for a while, and our ideas are wonderful and endless, but I think we should look past the looks and common..ness? and more at the effort.
Even bomb survivals can be fun (well, mostly if you play with friends) sometimes. Of course, if they're copied, then there's no effort. And unfortunately, pretty much all of them are. I really only care if a level is fun. Yes, I do look into the detail, and detail is important, but so is the experience.
I'm pretty darn sure we enjoy LBP, but with all of this copying, H4H, bad "cool levels" pages stuff, it's a bit hard to sometimes, isn't it? But that's just because we make it that way to ourselves. Some people are so pessimistic. Who cares about bad levels? There are just as many good ones! Yeah, they're hard to find, but with millions of people around the world publishing a special level each minute or so, I'm not surprised. Again, we have to look deeper.
I trust that most of us already understand this, because LBP has a very creative and smart community, but there are those little boogers out there that you just wanna iohgdlksahflksa. I wonder why some of us can't ignore them. That's how they get their publicity, they get hate, but it's still attention. It has the almost exact same result as when you publish a good level.
It is true that there are many players out there that don't get the slightest bit of attention, but it's a big community. Even so, they're there to help, right? Sorry if I sound like a ranting nerd right now, but I just wanted to know that. I'm sure we all.
(lol, everyone puts this, so why not?) tl;dr- (even though I trust you did) We try too hard.
EDIT: I realize we have to raise the bar, but I just feel like we're doing that too fast.

Yes indeed. The LittleBigPlanet community can be a very demanding bunch.
Whenever a new impressive level that becomes popular comes along, it raises the bar making player's expectations of a good level higher and higher making them harder to impress. Even Mm's DLC levels can fail to meet the community's high expectations (for example, the Pirates of the Carribean and Marvel levels have gotten plenty of stick from even members of this site. But I was impressed by them because I can't create levels of that standard).
I remember there was a level on the cool pages showcasing a Humvee which the author made. There was just the vehicle, some rugged terrain and a scoreboard. The vehicle was very well made. It looked & handled nicely and I rated it yay because I liked it. However, It had gotten a ton of bad reviews because there wasn't much else in the level and it was on the cool pages. Anyway, it just shows that people can be too demanding at times.

P.S, I hate the fact that this site asks you to log in again when you take too long to post. Especially given how slow I am at typing.

Opened this thinking it was about creators trying to hard to make their levels amazing and failing due to complexity, which I suppose IS a result of these higher expectations.

And that's to be expected. We've had LBP2 for nearly a year now (and those with the beta even longer), so people should expect greater things from the community.

IMO, all you need is a unique concept to succeed. If you manage to include great visuals and music, etc, then you're likely to have a winner. There's some luck to it though, so even the best can be missed.

As for the timeout, just copy your messages before you post. Get in the habit and it saves lots of headaches.

yeah the community has come to expect extremely polished levels and over the top environments. I love all that too, but I also like a good fun level, even if it's ugly. A lot of times though, it doesn't take that much effort to hide seams or build off of the floor.

as far as the time out issue D-E-S, right before you log in, click that little box that says "remember me" you'll stay logged in.

I expect to be entertained, that's all. Although I don't mind being wowed at the same time.

However, I appreciate effort above all. Somebody might make a basic level, that I find poorly designed and decorated, but if I see that they put a lot of effort, I'll give a happy face, and even a heart in some cases.

Effort is what I look for. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

I feel like it's because people used to focus on gameplay when they didn't have as much of an ability to make amazing looking levels. I usually rate levels based not on how they look, or how difficult it is to create or whatever, but on how much fun I had playing the level. I'll admit, I DO have fun with an occasional shark survival (that doesn't change the fact that it's copied though, which is annoying). But I don't know. Like you said, bad visuals will drive people away, but I've played some very creative levels that don't contain a single decoration and only use a few materials. I've rated up ugly levels that I had fun with, and I've rated down visually stunning levels because the journey through the level was bland in terms of gameplay.

That said, I think some people DO put too much effort into their levels. They spend forever decorating and it takes away from the level design sometimes. My friend and I made a race level (called "The Best Race Level EVER") with basic cars and a terrible looking course, but it was so much fun. And it only took 2 hours to make; it was just a spontaneous thing we started on my moon without even speaking about making a level before hand. We just kind of made it up as we went xD

To sum it all up, my opinion is that you can make extremely fun levels without trying so hard.

Edit: Well, then again, there is the impressiveness factor.. I won't rate down a level that "wow"s me, even if it's boring.

I think, in many cases, the innocence of LBP has been lost somewhere along the way.
The fact is that a lot of various types of people play. There are some truly great game creator talents out there and some that are not so talented but enjoy creating what they can.
People of all ages and with various skills.
Instead of encouraging each other some have chosen to judge all levels on the same level of talent. Not all creators will be able to meet the bar.
I've seen many creators get so discouraged they quit.
I like to look for the potential in all creators. If a someone does the best they can I will rate them with a smile. As CYMBOl said they put effort into it.
Not the copy levels who are out for trophies, they will fade from the game once they get their trophy.

I don't mind how a level looks as long as it isn't supposed to be about the visuals....
If it's for fun , it doesn't look good but it is fun then I don't mind....But if it has no gameplay then, well.....

i think you are only trying to hard at creating if you're not having fun. i'm having tons of fun working on my current project, and i'll probably end up getting pretty meticulous about every aspect of it because i love seeing it come together and develop into a cooler and cooler level. i think most of the people who are hardcore detail creators probably enjoy doing it that way. i mean what other reason would you have for working so hard on something in LBP?2011-12-24 15:49:00

Yeah, you don't have to put in extraordinary effort to make a great level in LBP. All you have to do is have a great concept. My friends and I found the best level ever made. It's a level I could probably make in an hour or two but the concept is so great that it keeps us coming back again and again. It's called Heads Up. If you like hanging out with friends then it's hard to find an experience that's more fun than this. No matter how many WOWing levels we play, Heads Up is the one that always keeps us coming back.2011-12-24 19:39:00
