My shipwreck level has kinda hit a dead end. So I thought I would get to work on the sequel of my pride and joy to get the creative juices flowing again.

Highlights include:

- More detailed environment. Think of the VR training level in the MGS pack. It will look exactly like that.
- With a more detailed environment comes a shorter level. Maybe 10 minutes instead of 20 lol.
- Paintinator action.
- Maybe even an explaination for all the testing in the first place.

That's sucks man. *hugs*

Anyway, I suggest using tons of lighting as a way to differentiate yourself in from the rest of the stages out there in terms of art direction. There is going to be a huge influx of MGS material created stages, like my own, so I don't want your stage to look like another "VR Training." Add a nice twist to it while keeping faithful to the original.

But the one good thing about the new materials is that it makes your stages look much more complex than usual, so even using simple shapes will come out beautifully. This way you really don't have to focus so much on detail versus gameplay (so keep the sequel the same length). Definitely looking forward to it.

Also, can I take first spot on your scoreboard again? =P

Well, I'm not too concerned about copying other levels. I am more concerned at making mine better than everyone else's. But I'm sure mine will stand out in some way.

And yes, go ahead and aim for the top, my friend.

Sounds great! I can't wait to see what you do with the Paintinator. Oh, and sorry about your losing your work, that can be quite frustrating.2008-12-28 15:13:00

Good deal and good luck with that. Ever think about adding some multiplayer sections?

Aw... you mean this one will have the Tron, Computer tiles instead of the white washed ones?

I liked the old look. .

Ah well, I suppose... can't wait!

Man, I can't wait. I absolutely loved the first. Believe it or not, I actually became extremely emotional when I played the first, actually feeling angry at the testing guy -- but like actually angry!

But like a couple of people have said, stay faithful to the original! Don't make it TOO different... I liked that whitewashed clean look.
But then again, do whatever you feel is best. It'll turn out the best that way

When I was playing the original one thing that came to mind was possibly a few puzzles featuring complex emitter action. Such as dropping an object through one area and having it drop down onto other ledges (kind of creating the illusion of a cube dropping through the floor and ending up dropping down from the ceiling in another part of the level).2008-12-31 19:04:00

Oooh ooh ooh! I loved your first H.A.T.E.

I really think a multiplayer level would rock.

And how about this ... have challenges where there is a "good enough" solution, and a "perfect" solution, and give out stickers for the "perfect" solution. Then have an area where you can access the extreme challenges only once you have enough stickers.

That's an understatement... even if it's half as good as the first it will be VERY good. 1% better and Voltiare will dominate LBP :O

I also hope that you get another review from that guy who did one on the first. That was pretty funny actually.

UPDATE:

- Back from vacation and finished Room #2.
- Thermometer is a concern as it seems to be filling quite steadily. Hopefully, it is just because of the materials and such and will slow down.
- Made two turrets and a tank. Turrets and tank have HEAVY influence of the objects made by Mm. I made them from scratch, but I studied their objects thoroughly before making mine. They know what they are doing. Don't mess too much with their design. Made them tougher (Bullets shoot faster and more often).

loved the first one! and my one suggestion is that if there is going to be a boss maybe make it a bit more epic. like an actual boss battle. that was the thing that i liked least about the first, is that there wasn't any threat or anything.
but thats just my opinion

but thats just my opinionThe boss of the level is not the computer, but rather Test Chamber #10. The computer is just the epilogue to provide closure to the story.

But I will try to make a boss...maybe a big tank or something. Or an elevator type sequence like in Mm's level.

BTW, I was playing H.A.T.E. to show my friend and he kept screwing up or dying in weird ways. It just made me feel bad because he isn't bad at video games. My level is too frustrating. Not hard, but frustrating. I look back and it isn't as good as I remember. I guess that is a testament that you learn so much after every level.

UPDATE:

- Finished Test Chamber #4.
- Added pictures.

UPDATE:

- Finished Test Chamber #5.

It seems as though it is not going to be 10 rooms long anymore. My thermometer just went to 55% and I am now starting on Room #6. I will make one more room and then make a boss and then see how far I am in thermometer space then. My guess is that it will be between 7-8 rooms.

I don't mean to hate on you pictures....but I am already getting tired of all the levels made with solely VR room material. I think you should go back to something closer to your original look. Obviously you shouldn't have it look identical to the first one, but the simple monochrome look worked really well.2009-01-17 18:11:00

It definitely looks like your sense of geometry and symmetry is still in-tact... I semi-agree with Walter, but I remember thinking red and white were played out from all the Mirror's Edge levels when I watched the video for hate, until I played through it and was blown away. Simplicity is key to H.A.T.E. and I think the VR is a good base, but put a nice spin on it plotwise - maybe even poke fun at VR like MM knocked trophy levels.

Are we venturing inside the mainframe from the original or takin' it to their world? I hope so... "After escaping the clutches of the A.I. and surviving the cruel and unusual expiriment, our lab rat turned conqueror has seen the outside world for the first time... and it is not a pretty sight.

Where are the other humans, he wonders. Where are all the trees and animals. Where is the ocean, and where is the color? Is this another test? Has the A.I. taken everything?

...am I really a monkey, after all?"

I still do and I thought they would fit the next H.A.T.E. perfectly as you are actually inside a computer program (H.A.T.E._2.exe). Unfortunately, I think I have gone too far to turn back and change the look of the entire level, but just know that there will be no more VR levels by me after this.

I really don't care too much if my level looks like other people's levels although I do care if you all don't like the look. Just know that it will play better than all of them (I hope) and that is what counts the most, right?

...am I really a monkey, after all?"The way I saw the story in the first was that the place wasn't abandoned. There were scientists watching at all times. Even if you destroyed the computer, were you free? In Portal, you are since it was abandoned, but not in H.A.T.E.. The scientists tranquilized you and ran a new test in a place where you couldn't damage anything...a computer program called H.A.T.E._2.exe.

All of it is training. Weeding out the weak to find the ultimate specimen. The ultimate specimen for what? I'm not even sure. Still thinking about it.

UPDATE:
- Finished Test Chamber #6.

Test Chamber #6 was a beast. It is an elevator room like the one seen in The Level Factory and it hogged my thermometer. I was at around 7 bars before the room. Now, I am sitting at around 3 so I just might, MIGHT be able to fit in a little boss although it looks like that will be tough to squeeze in.

Length is a big issue as well. If you speed run (skipping text, no prize hunting), you can get past Test Chamber #6 in around 5-6 minutes. On a good note, my brother who doesn't play as much LBP took over 10 minutes.

UPDATE:

- Changed the color of the walls to white.
- Tweaked various parts of the level.
- Published it with a lock.

If anyone wants a key for the level so far, then just let me know and add me on PSN so I can invite you to my pod and give you one. After you are done, post any comments and suggestions you have here or PM me.

Anyway, I'm almost finished, but the boss still has some bugs to work out. It may not look like much, but it required a lot of work to get it right.

Great, gonna try it right away!

EDIT:
Great level, But i think i prefer Hate 1. I've grown a little tired of the paintinator and the first level included more puzzles and more original challenges.
Btw are you supposed to go behind the boos and then shoot at a red block on the ground to kill him, because it felt like i broke him?

UPDATE:

- Unpublished the level.
- Removed the elevator (and recovered 3 bars of thermometer space).
- Finished with Test Chamber #6.

I think I will be able to have 8 rooms and then the boss as I have 3 bars left so far. Hopefully, that will lengthen the level a little more.

Uhhh, I'm guessing no. There was a block on the floor? I'm guessing it is the back of the missile launcher. How did it come off?

UPDATE:
- Finished Room #7.

I already have an idea of what I want to do in #8, but am still thinking of the best way to do it. It's going to be pretty complicated so I'm guessing this might be the last room before the boss.

Yeah it was the missile launcher that came off, but i don't remember how i managed to break it, i guess it managed to shoot itself with the missiles or some other explosives...

Just a suggestion after you finish beta - something I'm going to try when releasing my next level - put the key in a lock level and put the combination on your showcase thread. That way you can go through the entire showcase process with as many members of this site as possible before opening it to the public. (get every possible issue out of the way up front)

(there's also a much better chance of getting the highest possible rating before opening it)

Hey Voltaire,

I've just had a quick go at this level, and I've got to go and cook dinner now - but because I set this time aside to do feedback I thought I may as well give you my first impressions - I'll have another crack at it later...

My first impression is, well, impressive. I like the way you're ushered into the level with the bots and devices from the MGS gamepack, and you gradually let loose with your own inventions - your contraptions match the paradigm exactly and are tightly designed with smooth, well timed motions.

The visual design is dead on for this type of level, it's simplicity being a perfect backdrop in which to solve the puzzles. And despite its simplicity it still has a dynamic atmosphere - spacious without seeming empty, simple and uncluttered without seeming bare or unfurnished.

The dry wit of the computer contrasts nicely with the spartan surroundings, and gives the level real character - it really does feel that there's someone in there with you evaluating your progress.

Overall a level of high polish and satisfying gameplay. I got stuck at the bit with the hole in the floor (actually I fell into the hole and died), just after the "you can move things with the paintgun" tip from the computer. I'll play it again tonight.

I played this again the other day and have to say, it's my favorite LBP level. I love a grand adventure, but the puzzles in this are so unique that its easily rewritten the order of my favorite genre of levels list with brilliant puzzles cemented at the top.

By far, the best level in all of LBP for me.
