"Pandora is an automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on approval or disapproval ? which Pandora takes into account for future selections."

If you haven't tried it already, do so now. (http://pandora.com/)

I have found new music that I like on this little (heh) thing that I have on anything else, even iTunes Genius.

The reason it works is because it runs on the Music Genome Project, which "captures the essence of music at the fundamental level" using over 400 attributes to describe songs and a complex mathematical algorithm to organize them.

I even have it on my iTouch! :arg:

I've been using it for a long time now (a year next January), and while I found it to be nice (great, simplistic design, the engine works well, etc.), I can't help but feel it's not really worth my time. If I want a mix of music, I'd almost rather just listen to an online radio station that covers an entire genre, rather than listen to bands similar to ones I like.

Of course, that's probably just because I have a weird way of listening to music - I like different bands/musicians, and not other ones, even if they're very similar. To add to that, even if I say I "like" a band or musician, that really only means I listen to a few of their songs. So, in that sense, it doesn't really help me to listen to bands similar to my favorites, because I don't really have any favorites.

But, in a completely technical sense, it works great; the people behind it are very intelligent and should be commended for their work. I just can't see myself using it too often.

Yeah. I like a particular kind of music so it works great for me.

Also, you can merge a lot of genres into one station, so the stations can be as varied as you want. :arg:

Use it all the time as background music for parties, dinner, etc. But what annoys me is that after a couple of hours it stops playing and gives you a message that "it seems you are no longer listening", WTH? just because I am not interacting with the site it does not mean I am no longer listening...

LOL.

Yeah, that happens sometimes to me aswell.

They have to pay the artists everytime their song is played so I can see why.

I've used it for some time, but it's never been my primary choice for listening to music. It's cool to leave on for a bit, but I get bored fairly quickly. As someone else suggested, I'd rather listen to a station that covers a genre of music - Lithium 24 on Sirius (90's alternative, grunge) for instance - rather than a particular artist and other artists somehow related to them. Just my opinion...

Personal preference aside, it's a great option and I know several people that enjoy it thoroughly.

I tried one of these ages ago, I liked it, but then I kind of tailed off. I'll give this one a go. I wonder how good they are at British bands that haven't made it to the US yet...

Or, I won't because it's not available outside the US. Darn...
