Nostalgia Complex

Archive: 5 posts

I focussed as much on gameplay as I possibly could in this level, so I know the visuals really aren't great. As it says in the level description, this was inspired by one the first (and one of my favorite) LBP levels I've ever played. Anyway, this level is a colorful, challenging puzzle platformer. There's a race mode, a two player bonus section, and lots of hidden secrets. Have fun

General:
I really enjoyed this level and it was a pleasant surprise. Good range of gameplay and nice visuals.

Aesthetics:
I love the whole basic look of the level; the block colours really do make it look fun and very 'littlebigplanet-ty'. I have played many levels in my time and whilst I do also love the super-detailed levels, some of my favourite levels are the visually simpler levels like this one. I understand that visuals wasn’t your main concern, and it does come across, they aren’t brilliant, but at the same time... they put the emphasis on the gameplay. My only real concern about this style is the occasional 'blank' cardboard box, I think these should also be coloured to make it look better.

Gameplay:
I have always been a big fan of 'keeping it simple' in certain levels and I was very pleased with how this level played out. There was a vast amount of gameplay elements throughout the level, some more unusual than others. I loved how 'basic' some of the challenges were, it reminds me of the good old LBP1 days when there wasn’t such an emphasis on logic and simple challenges were more common, In that sense 'Nostalgia Complex' certainly delivers.

Some of my favourite gameplay elements included the bounce pads on string, they were very simple yet very interesting and satisfying to use!
The challenge with the coloured boxes and the grabinator was fun and puzzling, I was happy to see a little break from jumping around, to take time to actually have to use my brain to solve a more complex puzzle. The use of those boxes in the following bonus (where you have to put all three in the gap) was also clever... but I could not be bothered to go back to get them (I suppose the active are rewarded).

Another part I enjoyed was the part when you had to grapple a falling bomb, for the first 5 minutes... I didn’t even realise it was a grapple hook and through I was using a grabinator... I didn’t get very far that way...

Replay value is also a great feature, I wouldn’t mind playing this level immediately after I have completed it and would definitely come back in the future to give it another go. The use of a bonus race mode is also a great idea that really does add that little extra excitement to the gameplay and could leave even the most experienced gamers flustered after falling of bounce pad for the 10th time!

Overall Pros:

Very Interesting gameplay mechanics.
Nice logo and awesome level name!
Even though I played by myself, I loved to see the X2 challenge in the level!
I loved how you get shot back to the beginning of the level half way through, a fun addition that makes it seem less linear.

Overall Cons:

The occasional bits of unstickered cardboard stick out too much and don’t really fit the theme.
More Score bubbles would be great, to add a bit more of a rewarding factor.
I am not a huge fan of the plasma effect, but that is just me.
I feel like the tower part after the X2 challenge could be rearranged better. But this is a minor change.
Would be more fun with some more mind boggling complex puzzles.

Conclusion:
Loved the level, a few minor flaws, but greatly made up for with the range of gameplay. This level deserves more attention and I recommend it to all players to go and play.

Wow, thanks so much for the feedback. I'm glad that I was able to get my point across that sometimes simplicity can be fun too with this level And thanks for listing the cons too; I'll go back and try to fix some of those, like the blank cardboard and maybe add more score bubbles.

The use of those boxes in the following bonus (where you have to put all three in the gap) was also clever... but I could not be bothered to go back to get them (I suppose the active are rewarded).

You actually only need to get one box in the gap I tried to show that by putting an OR gate next to the box stickers. I guess that's another thing I need to fix though.
