Metal Gear Rising

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an upcoming action video game under development by Platinum Games and produced by Kojima Productions as part of the Metal Gear series, for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.
The game was originally announced and developed by Kojima Productions as Metal Gear Solid: Rising, a stealth action game set between the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The game was first hinted during Hideo Kojima's keynote presentation at the 2009 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. His presentation followed the long development process of the Metal Gear franchise up to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and eventually leading up to the future with the final mission title being "The Next MGS" with Cyborg Raiden standing next to the title.
Prior to the announcements of the game, Kojima Productions featured a countdown timer on their website, having weather going from cloudy to extremely heavy rain with thunder and lightning, until the day that Rising was announced, leading to sunny weather. At the conclusion of the countdown, the site was replaced with image of a brick wall featuring a splash-screen graphic for Metal Gear Solid: Rising. The series' traditional tagline of "Tactical Espionage Action" was also altered to "Lightning Bolt Action," a play on the fact that Raiden's name is Japanese for "thunder and lightning."
The game was officially announced at E3 2009 at the Microsoft press conference. A teaser trailer was released by series' director Hideo Kojima, although he will be serving only as executive producer for the game. The game was initially only announced for the Xbox 360 but was later confirmed for the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows platforms. According to the "Kojima Productions Report" podcast the game will use a brand new game engine, rather than the MGS4 engine. It was also announced that Kojima will be involved with the game but will not have a large input, as 100% of his input is with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PlayStation Portable.

The game's original cover artwork was leaked on Xbox Live on June 10, four days before E3 2010, but was soon taken down and replaced with the official logo. During Microsoft's E3 press conference on June 14, Hideo Kojima introduced the game's original lead designer, Mineshi Kimura, who unveiled a new trailer which included cutscene and gameplay footage and introduced the concept of zan-datsu (斬奪 lit. "cut and take"?). In a follow-up interview with Famitsu, Kimura and the game's creative producer, Shigenobu Matsuyama, discussed the title's new style and gameplay elements, as well the traditional stealth and "no kill" elements of the Metal Gear series that would be retained. Kimura and Matsuyama again presented the trailer on June 16 during Konami's E3 press conference, then took stage, further clarifying the game's "take" mechanic and again emphasizing that the game will contain stealth elements.
Specifically, the games stealth elements would have emphasized Raiden's considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as "hunting stealth." Unlike the "waiting stealth" of previous titles, in which players remained hidden and avoided combat, players in Rising will instead quickly stalk their enemies and use acrobatic maneuvers to stay out of sight while closing in. This ties in with the game's zan-datsu feature, allowing them to prey upon enemies to obtain weapons, items, and energy. Kimura noted that he wanted Raiden to be able to move like he did in the MGS4 trailers, and to show "the stealth of the sword, and the strength of not even losing to the gun, and the fear and power you have with this blade."
Metal Gear Solid: Rising was originally conceived as an interquel that would chronicle the series of events that resulted in the transformation of Raiden, the protagonist and player character of Metal Gear Solid 2 into his cyborg ninja persona in Metal Gear Solid 4. Rising would have taken place during a point in the series' chronology at which Raiden had already begun his transformation into cyborg form, albeit with a different and somewhat more cruel appearance from the one seen in MGS4.

Concept art on display at the Art of Yoji Shinkawa exhibit in January 2011.
Concern has risen over the game's realistic depictions of human dismemberment during player-controlled sequences, a hard limit for Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization, which may necessitate censorship in the domestic Japanese release of the game. As a result, the version of the E3 2010 trailer available for viewing on the game's official Japanese website has had such scenes removed. This may have been a factor in changing the game's setting to take place after Metal Gear Solid 4, in an era where technology has advanced such that most of the enemies have become inhuman cyborgs.
At TGS 2010 Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be playable in 3D.
In January 2011, several pieces of concept art for Rising were displayed at Yoji Shinkawa's two-week exhibit, The Art of Yoji Shinkawa, hosted by the Konami Style Shop in Tokyo. The artwork included various illustrations of Raiden and other cybernetically enhanced characters, vehicles and equipment, scenery, and a hand-painted model of a feminine cyborg carrying a sword and a robotic infant. Several pieces of the concept artwork were also featured in merchandise sold at the exhibit.
In November 2011, it was announced over Twitter that Shigenobu Matsuyama had moved to a different division within Konami and that Yuji Korekado had taken over as the game's lead producer.
In the December 2011 issue of PlayStation Official Magazine UK, Hideo Kojima said Metal Gear Solid: Rising is "moving forward". Kojima told the magazine that Rising remains significantly different to existing Metal Gear games, although he has retained an element of control over it and won't let it stray too far from the series' roots.7He stated that "If somebody thinks 'I love Snake' and just really wants traditional stealth gameplay and that experience, then it may be hard to get into Rising, but for people who are more open and willing to try new things, it shouldn't be a problem."
A trailer shown at the Spike Video Game Awards 2011 on December 10, 2011 revealed the game's new title, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and its new developer, Platinum Games, who took over development when the original project was cancelled due to the original team having difficulties designing around the cutting concept. The trailer also confirmed that Raiden will once again be voiced by Quinton Flynn, who previously stated that Konami haven't contacted him regarding the game, and remarked that he would be disappointed if he were not involved.

What to say...
I love the Metal Gear Solid series, Raiden mark2 is one of my favourite character ever, Platinum games released my favourite game of this gen (Bayonetta) and an absolute gem like Vanquish, so I'm all excited!

What's most interesting to me is that the game was actually cancelled before Platimun took over:

We hadn't heard any official news on Metal Gear Solid: Rising for over a year, and then it showed up with a new name, a new storyline, and a new team making it. You don't have to be part of a secret cabal of world-dominating AIs to realize that there was some ... trouble somewhere in the last year. And, in fact, Rising had been canceled.

The staff at Kojima Productions had the "cut anything" concept realized, according to Andriasang's report of the latest Hideraji podcast. They also had the motion capture done and a story written ... but the rest was in the air. Without a clearer direction, Kojima decided to end development.

Platinum Games studio reps happened to visit, the story goes, and expressed their excitement for the project, leading to their assignment to complete the game. It was Platinum's idea to change the story, and they also offered the concept of "a game where it feels so good to chop things up that you would die," as Andriasang translates it. We think that's a more promising concept than a game where it feels good to chop things up, and then the game dies.

I am as big a Metal Gear fan as they come and I like the idea of having a whole new chapter with the possibility of multiple games under the 'Rising' brand. People need to realize this is NOT part of the MGS mythos and the emphasis is NOT on "tactical espionage action" but rather OTT action. Rest assured, there is no one more suited then Platinum games when it comes to that. 60 FPS, insane boss battles, super-fluid combat. I thought the music in the trailer was cheesy but the slicing and dicing made up for it. "I think it's time for Jack to let her rip!" lmao.

The music, from a musician standpoint wasn't not cheesy, was awful and badly composed and arranged imho.
I guess it was just a place holder.

I KNOW I will love my 60 FPS ^___^

I hate how people received the game...I twitted to Inaba to congratulate on his work and that's one observation I posted on N4G about what I think about gamers today...

I think gamers nowadays are a flock of brainless people.
They only crave militar FPSs when we have seriously too many of them.
They go ape**** for a trailer that doesn't show anything (The Last Of Us) just because it's made from the best studio ever, they go ape**** for a CGI trailer that doesn't show anything (Transformer) from a decent dev studio.
They like the new DmC that is the epitome of emptiness and they bash MGR.
They want a story but complain about long cutscenes and linear gameplay.
I think something is seriously wrong with the new generation of gamers.
Seriously

Not so excited for this. Was really looking forward to seeing what happened to Raiden between MGS2 and 4. Now it looks we'll be getting a bit of a mindless hack and slash game, with the story taking place after MGS4. Which kind of destroys Raidens ending in that game. Still, Kojima has said it's not part of the Metal Gear Solid series so the story will be non cannon at least.
I'll prob buy it just to see what happens, but I've never been into hack and slash games much.

Inaba responds to the haters:

Let me begin.

It seems there are some who wish to imply PlatinumGames was able to achieve what Kojima Productions could not -- interviewers among them.

This notion is spurious. Clearly, we have not yet produced any results in the world of Metal Gear.

The artists at Kojima Productions gave their blood, sweat and tears to bring the Metal Gear Saga to life.

The gap is immense. Mr. Kojima tossed his chips on our table, believing we could handle the task. In other words, he took a gamble.

Many seem to think the change from MGSR to MGR altered everything about the game, but this is simply not true.

MGSR's concept excited us. We have love and respect for it, as we do the character of Raiden and the idea of freely cutting anything apart.

I know reaction to the new trailer is mixed. Yet I also believe our love and respect shines through.

It is my hope that you catch a glimpse of the future in the footage.

In order to achieve that evolution, that future, we at PlatinumGames will continue to fight, shedding our own blood, sweat and tears.

That is all.

They re-implemented the "cut at will" mechanic, which is good news. I was sad when I heard Platinum Games had removed it.

Okay, I like what I am seeing. Call me pretty sold. Action game with the possibility of a bit of stealth, exactly what a ninja game should be I guess.2012-06-08 12:09:00

My bet is that we will play at least 3, max 6 versions of Raiden in different timelines.
During the GAMEPLAY section of the trailer we see 3 Raidens. A pre MGS4 Raiden, a MGS4 Raiden and what Kojima called via twitter "Black Raiden"
And in the opening we see 5 Raidens: Kid, Teen, MGS2, MGS4, Black Raiden.
I think Platinum will pull some kind of swift "Uncharted 3" and show Raiden as a kid and teen through flashbacks and with some stealthier mechanics.
I think it's a good way to let the cut/cut/cut ot become repetitive

It has been getting good reviews. Main issue seems to be the camera. The length has been criticized too, but Platinum isn't known for making lengthy games.2013-02-19 16:56:00

i am a long time metal gear fan and while i don't hate raiden, i'm simply just not interested in this game. it just ain't the metal gear that i know. yeah it has the metal gear name slapped on it and one of the characters. it's a spin off that won't be getting my cash :-)2013-02-19 18:02:00

I've played what I assume is roughly half the game by now (judging by how many missions there are in total) and I'm loving it! The blade mode mechanic is among the most addictive features I've experienced in gaming. It's right up there with Prince of Persia's time rewind and Max Payne's bullet time. I barely leave any intact objects behind. And cutting certain limbs off enemies just for kicks, and see them try fighting me without a leg or an arm? Priceless. The action setpieces are sweet too.

Downsides: sometimes the camera derps the hell out. Even though it only happens occasionally, the blocking mechanic requires you to be perfectly aware of your surroundings so it can ruin a few encounters.

But what annoys me the most is that if you get too damaged in a short period of time, Raiden will become stunned. To get back in action you have to repeatedly flick the thumbstick. Something you can almost never do in time before an enemy seizes the opportunity to pound on you even more.

"Oh, you're getting owned? Allow me to paralyse you temporarily so you can get owned some more." Who thought this was a good idea?

I got the game on launch day and loved it! I've never been a big Metal Gear fan, but I can understand why fans didn't like this one so well. I beat it a few hours ago. The game has only 8 missions, but heck, the final boss was one of the greatest ever (and has the best music, just a bit higher than the music in the fight with Monsoon), but I won't spoil any of it. I just wish that the game had at least 15 missions. Also, the blade mode = GOD! Also, the new sword you use on the final boss and unlock once the game is beaten is boss! I'll give y'all a hint: the one that injured Raiden at the beginning.2013-02-25 00:09:00

Finished yesterday. Indeed the last boss was effing awesome, and really hard. A ton of HP, resilient, had a lot of varied and powerful moves... You have to be contantly on your toes, even more than in games like Dark Souls. If you get careless for 5 seconds the whole fight's ruined.

What I'd like to point out is that besides Raiden there are very few things connecting this game to the previous Metal Gear games. A RAY, some gekkos and dozens of dwarf gekkos appear as enemies, and Sunny makes a brief appearance. There are a couple mentions about the Patriots (not as current antagonists mind you, they're actually gone), nanomachines and Raiden's past as child soldier. Ocelot, Otacon or even Snake aren't mentioned once.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand it's good they're making clear this is a completely new chapter in the Metal Gear continuity, unburdened of the characters, events and plot twists from the previous games. Metal Gear lore is so extensive and convoluted it's almost impenetrable for newcomers. Even veterans were starting to get confused with the storyline, so they really needed to leave most of that baggage behind. But on the other hand it's weird how in a game where they constantly mention the fall of the Patriots, Snake isn't mentioned by anyone.

I summon this thread from the firey depths of page 9 to bring news of DLC becoming free.

Platinum's action game Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is now cheaper and its downloadable content is now free.
Konami has cut the price of the game, which launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013, in the US to $29.99, and made the Jetstream and Blade Wolf DLC free.
"The lower price point gives new fans the opportunity to experience the game at a reduced price, with the added bonus free DLC packs that lengthen the overall experience," Konami said.
The main game stars cyborg ninja Raiden, who slices and dices countless enemies. The Jetstream DLC is a side story starring Brazilian lone swordsman Samuel Rodriguez as a playable character. The Blade Wolf DLC is another side story with robot dog LQ-84i as a playable character.
