Rube Goldberg Machine Level?

Archive: 16 posts

Basically a rube goldberg machine is a series of complicated and intracet tasks performed by various objects, that all in all accomplish a simple goal.

For example:

RouXygRcRC4 (i dunno how to make it video)
I think if we put the sackperson in a box right at the start that gets shuffled around the level with cameras that allow the player to see whats going on it will be good...

I think everyone just had a big lightbulb go up over their heads, eh? Interested to see what responses will be...

Good idea, but we have had this idea before. It is going to go through loads of stuff and then kill you.

Check the group for idiots of littlebigplanet.

I'm a little confused by what you mean by kill me? O.o;

Not you in particular, just whoever plays the level.

Idiots of littlebigplanet is a group we have where we are planning a machinima.

Oh, I wasn't plannign on maign mine kill you D:

I was thinking makign it lower down the exit to the level via winch =D

I think I'm going to make the model of my level a large room, use some ideas from this...

I had very similar idea as this except instead of sackboy being part of the machine (kill or no kill) he is racing against the machine. It would be all about timing and being at the right place at the right time.

For instance there could be a rolling ball on one level and sackboy on another. The ball then trigger a winch which sackboy must grab at the right time.
Or the ball falls on a sewsaw, catapulting sackboy and triggering another part of the machine. That sort of thing.

I'm going to wait until my skills have improved before tackling this one. Also I hoping MM will add magnets to the game, that will make this kind of level so cool.

well great news, for all of you that want to try and build one, check out this site contest.

Link:Set The Scene (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6647)

Just go and check it out, and you will see that if you were to enter a rub goldberg machine level it would feel right at home in this contest

Cheers!

Yeah, we've had the mousetrap suggestion before, but the proper name is a nice thing to know thanks for the vid.

I tried to do something like this with the point wheel in Facial Reconstruction, but things like this = break city, so I had to cut the segment shorter than planned. All in all, it's something I'd like to accomplish on a much bigger scale, and would definitely like to see someone else do.

The main problem is playtesting, weight and trajectory. You need to work with at least wood, which is heavier than cardboard and harder to launch, but lighter than metal and still harder to break than cardboard. You'll think you have your elevators and flippers set just right, but upon playtesting it fails to compensate for the weight and momentum of the moving object it's intended to propel. The player themselves, the amount of players and what they do INSIDE the object to retard or impede it's momentum must also be calculated and taken into account.

A change in the direction of the object as it is bounced around is difficult as well, because cradling the momentum to a halt, and reintroducing it in the opposite direction with a whole new trajectory for the next sequence... ugh, it's very much a meticulous operation.

The speed of the moving object is definitely something that can counteract the players interference... if they simply can't get a foothold long enough to run the opposite direction, or if it doesn't depend on them to maintain it's course, it should work well too. Again, the faster the movement, the more exact the timing will have to be.

Even before that, the exact positioning of magnetic key/switch set ups is touchy to say the least as it must roll to the right spot and land in the radius at just the right time and place, every time. You'll have alot of headaches with this depending on how complex and long your sequence is, but I think after alot of trial and error and with a more developed understanding of the mechanics of winchs and bolts it would be a much smoother process.

Go for it!

Personally I've built first 10 minutes of t, and simply do this:

I have a series of connected pistons hooked up to a pod of sorts, all pistons set to .1 and hidden beneath chunk of material.

When you start, your character hops into the pod, the whole level starts. The first piston pushes you int middle of first scene, and you get to watch it all go. When that part fiishes, second piston extends you further and you, stuck in the pod, get to watch it all happen. The scene itself is what controls the pod, so you can't ever out run or lag behind the scene if something is too slow/fast.

The inspiration of this level is from rube golderberg mechanics. Here is a youtube link

I'm making one for the set the scene contest. It's not overtly complex and I'm focusing more on style than making an epic feat of physics.2009-01-07 05:37:00
