Bipedal, Sideways-Walking Contraption

Archive: 6 posts

I was wondering, and had this idea of a contraption that would have two legs and walk sideways, like a crab does. Is it possible to do this, or would it be too difficult for the contraption to hold its balance?2008-12-27 05:41:00

It's possible but really hard. I think the easiest way would be jets on the feet.2008-12-27 05:54:00

couldn't you just use the basic creature legs, but hidden somewhere, and make fake legs that move and LOOK like it's walking sideways?
The other way would be like those old wind-up walking toys, using legs that have giant pegs/teeth on the toe and heel of each foot for stability. Each leg goes up and down on a peg on a rotating drum to make it go "forward" each time the drum completes a rotation.
I haven't made one, but those are my initial thoughts.

Yeah, I also thought about this possibility. I'll probably end up doing something like this, considering the real thing would be too much of a hassle.

Personally myself, I've tried making a couple larger creatures and find the best method is to make fake legs and a hidden psiton to dark matter.

Simply have the pisotn set to 0 or small length, so it dissapears, and have it hooekd up to a lose winch or somethign fro shock absorption to prevent breaking.

Thus the beats looks like it's walking, but in fact all the legs are for show, and the piston is actually whats pushing it along.
