The Book-Shelf

Archive: 4 posts

This is a fun little level about a fictional character devised by an overworked professor at BookNook University. Make your way up the bookshelf to prove to the professor's colleagues you are real. And watch out for the Bookwyrm! Seriously though.

This level is a mixed bag, to be sure. Here's an analysis for the curious:

Graphics

The level takes place in a very large bookshelf. The bookshelf itself is nicely done and conservative; the most prominent material used, unsurprisingly, is the bookshelf from Da Vinci's Hideout. At some points, however, there are some surprisingly good constructs, such as the Bookwyrm near the top.

Sound

The theme of the level is Da Vinci's Tutorial music, which increases in volume as you ascend. There are also a few appreciated sound effects, such as intermittent wind noises made by flying books.

Gameplay

The Book-Shelf can be very polarizing at this point. Much of the gameplay in this level is trial-and-error, with emphasis on the error. There are so many small platforms and moving books that it can be difficult to get a clear footing. While Your Mileage May Vary on whether this is a good or bad thing, there are some points at which the level can get unintentionally difficult. On my first playthrough, for example, grabbing a certain item caused me to fall all the way to the bottom, past all of the platforms that I had gone through previously. When I attempted to get back up, I hit a ceiling that had closed when I has passed it the first time, rendering the level unwinnable by mistake.

Mercifully, the difficulty actually seems to be a little more merciful after the first few challenges. In addition, after enough trials, one will be able to pick up on the subtle patterns of the books' movements and be able to proceed with fewer issues.

Story

I found myself a bit disappointed with the story, unfortunately. When you start out, a bookish professor asks you to go up the bookshelf and present yourself as living proof to your colleagues. When you reach the top, however, you are met with a mildly confusing cutscene that seems to say that you aren't real after all. You're then free to simply stroll on to the scoreboard. Once again, Your Mileage May Vary on whether the story is satisfactory.

Conclusion

The Book-Shelf is...interesting. It has several high points and low points in my opinion, but a different gamer may declare it to be either perfect or rubbish. I recommend this level to fans of trial-and-error gameplay as well as anyone who wants to see for themselves how subjective the level is. Love it or hate it.
