Robotic Automatic (I hope you all like it) ~With video~

Archive: 41 posts

Hello everyone, Robotic Automatic is my latest level (even though it was posted up a month and a half ago, it wore me out and i haven't been able to complete any of my other creations since hahaha). I've edited it and modified it so much that the video below only shows what the level looked like maybe a month ago. It still has a similar flow, but I've tried adding a lot and changing up the scenery quite a bit.

I hope you all enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it

This level looks really nice. I'll definitely try it.
The one thing that the video didn't show was if there was any sort of plot involved. I like a plot even if it is shallow and undeveloped. Just something to set the mood/direction of play. The part where the level flips upside down is crazy. What an innovative idea.

There's not really a plot, but there are a few speech bubbles to move you along. Most of them are just meant to be silly though 2008-12-27 05:29:00

Wow, this level reminds me of my own Tekno Fortress.

Most. Awesome.

No, I'm not saying you copied me or anything. It's just cool to see something like that happen. Looks pretty fun. Like the review fellow said, good variety with the challenges.

I'm really lookin' forward to this... your 3rd on my list now after Nev's level, and Final Frontier. The amount of mechanical variety and platformer goodness in this video is staggering. If you've improved on it since, it must be amazing...

btw... I greatly empathize with the pains of trying to get large wheels to do what you want them to without breaking :/

yeah, getting that first part of the level to rotate 180 degrees, building a section of the level upside down, then getting two other parts of the level to connect by pistons was a real pain in the butt haha ><2008-12-27 07:56:00

This level is the worst level ever!!!

Just kidding. Actually, Ragnorak's levels are really awesome, everyone should give them a go. Veins is not too shabby either. I might like that one better than Robotic. ^_^

Man... you really killed it with this one. I don't know how happy I am with the paintenator being slapped on it, but meh, it works and why not, right? This is by far the most mechanically complex user level I've seen yet. It doesn't look quite as nice as the collectors lair, but it's definitely got a chance when it comes to moving objects and mechanisms. The rotation is more impressive live and the wheel track is AWESOME...2008-12-27 19:13:00

yeah i sorta just put the paininator in there to give people a chance to mess with it who didn't buy the pack and it gave me an easy, already established platform to tinker with it ^^

i tried not making the level overwhelmed with the paintinator, you only need to use it twice throughout the level iirc. my next level is based around the paininator if i can ever get it finished, but i've been working on and tweaking robotic for almost two months now and im just creatively exhausted hehe :

I know how that is... it really can take alot out of you, and creation is really best done when you're inspired and can just run with it like it has to come out: that way we're not approaching this hobby as an unpaid job. At least not completely heh.

Sometimes in create mode I feel like I'm getting alzheimers, like I had a stroke or something from trying to multitask and plan too much - like opening pop it and forgetting completely what I was about to do or tweak or what, frustrated with it like an old man who doesn't know his wife's name lol

that's exactly how i feel haha. i have three levels in my moon right now that are just stuck in the first section. i know where to go with the levels and how i want them to play out/look, but actually putting down the 'tracks' just leaves me lost right now :2008-12-27 20:38:00

what's not to enjoy about your level, really? It's funny, good platforming, not too hard, not too easy, and a lot of things blow up. A perfect combination. Throw a few cats, ghosts and crystals in there and it'd be my favorite level of all time.2008-12-28 02:46:00

Definitely going to check this one out when I get back home to my PS3. The level flipping upside down, and the lighting, were some of the best parts of LBP levels I've seen so far. (Despte the fact I haven't seen alot <_<)2008-12-28 03:29:00

So I watched the video, which is old I am assuming because I've read of an appearance of the Paintinator which wasn't in the video's playthrough, and you like to improve and update your level a lot, right? How much of the thermometer does your level take up?2008-12-28 04:16:00

i think about 80-85 percent so far, but i don't have much more room to work with, that's my main problem. that level goes from wall to wall and ceiling to floor. it may not look like it, but the start of the level is close to the upper left corner and the end of the level is nearly at the ground way to the right side 2008-12-28 04:19:00

Actually, I need to play through your level again to see the new stuff. I'll get back to you.

(FYI people! Constantly updating and improving your level is a great way to get people to come back for more and play it again. )

well it's not too different, i've mostly made ascetic tweaks and changed the timing on some of the parts people have complained about. oh and lots more explosions!2008-12-28 04:28:00

no, just watching that video, everything is pretty much in place except for a few pieces. i've just tried to refine the level quite a bit the last few weeks. by all means please play it and tell me when you think ^^2008-12-28 04:33:00

If you're worried about time, then that really shouldn't be a problem because I can go to my PS3 right now and play it.

~Should I play or should or I go?~ (does anybody get that?)

Alright, so I just got to the first Paintinator part, with the Score Bubbles. I'll start now, with a little at a time and edit.

This one is easy. After you pass the door that leads you to the section with the constant dropping bombs, there is a Sound Object that is visible. I'm not sure if you intended it to be that way, but just so you know, it can be seen.

yeah, it's supposed to be like a speaker. when you get that message at the start of the level.2008-12-28 04:59:00

Alright, so I found out that the Paintinator was to be used to shoot down those Score Bubbles. I actually had no idea what to do with it at first. The itty bitty problem here is that when you go up those steps to the Piston Spikes section, the camera does not show the Paint Switches. I saw the Score Bubbles, so I jumped for them, and that's when I saw the Paint Switches. But even when you go back up the stairs, the camera does not show them. However, the camera will fix itself when you're up there if you simply jump. The thing is, nothing there requires jumping until later on, so one might not even jump. They might do what I did and jump for the Score Bubbles, which is pretty likely, but if you wanted, you could add a Camera there to show that Score Bubbles and the Paint Switches just to be sure they see it.

(That also seems like a spot where you would have an army dude say a funny quip about the Paintinator. XD)

adding a camera section right now to focus on that part. i'd like to add another army guy, but i have no room for one :2008-12-28 05:21:00

Also, forgot to mention this about the 'Speaker' (Sound Object). Line it up with the Checkpoint?

Another little thing. Maybe gives the second army dude at the start of the level a sound of a guy talking, as he is currently silent.

Okay, so you've got that one cut out of the army Sackboy at the beginning to show the costume would look good in your level. Instead of that 90 degrees, maybe put it to 180 degrees instead. Because he's laying on the ground. XD

Also, with the army Sackboy cut out: This is another little thing. It's not even a problem, just a preference. When you activate the Trigger Switch, he goes up, and when you leave, he goes down. I think he should stay up once he's up. Do you know how to do this, or do you want me to tell you how?

not exactly sure how this affects anything :

he doesn't really say anything important, its an optional thing to do so i didn't put a sound effect on him.

yeah same thing as the soldier, wasn't really important so i just sorta added it out of boredom one day, but i did fix the positioning

nah, i like that he goes down, if he stayed up, i'd be annoyed for some reason haha

How do you make a red light like in the beginning?

To change the color of the light, press square while the Pop-It Cursor is on the light, which will bring up the Tweak Menu. There you can modify various options, including color.
