Serious Creators Block

Archive: 10 posts

Hello everyone.

Okay, right now I have just booked off holidays over christmas and have around 14 days to make a platforming level. However, I have serious creators block. I don't come here today wanting to know your amazing and brilliant ideas because they're your ideas and I need to think of my own. Buttttt.... and there is always a but... I really do not know how to start the level. So the questions I have:

1.) Any tips for getting inspiration?

2.) Any tips for starting a level. For example, Where do you start? Music? Floor? Walls? Materials? etc.

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks in advance.

Cheers Liam

First thing to figure out is what you are basing your gameplay around, and then pick a theme that fits.

So, someone wanted to use bounce pads and set the level in a bounce pad factory, someone wanted ballons and set the level in the sky, or, you can do what I did for my platformer, Jumper. I had my idea for gameplay, but the level design was very basic, even a bit abstract. You can see the first half of it on YouTube in my Sig.

That's my two cents anyway.

Gameplay, theme, materials and decs, then music. Good luck.

I can give a few tips on starting a level.

First you need to know what is the main element of your level. For example, I'm making a platformer where you control a special sackbot, so I am focusing on making the sackbot first and then I can build the rest of the levels around him since I will know what he is capable of.

Basically, you need to find out what is going to be the basis of your level and work from there. Maybe you want a heavily grappling hook oriented level, or you want to focus more on a vertical level. Once you find out your main focus, you shouldn't have too many issues building from there. As for visuals, it honestly helps me out when I make a section of my level out of cardboard first. Then I go ahead and decorate it. It makes things a lot easier for me when I don't know exactly what kind of look I'm going for at first.

I have 2 methods to cure creators block:

1. join anyone of many contests that are usually running... for example lbpc6

2. make a blank wall, place 5 or 6 random stickers and build a level that incorporates the themes chosen... if you want more surprise get a friend to do it

One of my favorite things to do is to simply enter create mode, and just start goofing off. Eventually I'll make something that seems stupid at first, then I think...."Hey, that's actually pretty neat!" That's how I created the Blockinator for my Crisis at Orbitron Station level.2011-12-05 01:53:00

First, think of a theme and the materials you want to use, it looks better if you ( Like me ) choose materials for specific platforms / objects. Like all static platforms have this this material. And all platforms that moves have a different material and so on, get it ? So try to stick with a theme. I always just start with making some simple platforms and then work my way from there.

Also, after I have thought of a theme and some materials, I always start making alot of complicated, advanced kinda contraption things that most people don't want to make while they are making the actual level. then I just save them and use them when I make the level. I think it's alot easier this way, and my results are always getting better
( And then you also have some easy prizes if you want to make prize bubbles )

Hope this could help just a bit

Excuse my English, I'm from Denmark xD

What I always do is start with logic and make the really hard stuff first, and then I will actually design the level and put in my contraptions where necessary. If you are using a sackbot who will have special powers or skills, then make him completely before you make anything else. As for the inspiration, I would just go out and look at stuff in the real world, maybe put a spin on something cool. You could also just play a bunch of levels, and take what you like from each of them. Best of luck to you.2011-12-06 00:28:00

I come up with a gameplay idea, then build most of the logic for it. As you go you will probably have more things you want to put in, so you can extend the logic.

This might not work for most, but the last thing I usually do is make a story for it.
