Afterlife Part 1: Hell

Archive: 5 posts

This is a fairly conventional platformer. It mixes land and water based gameplay, with a lot of timing-based obstacles.

This level is also single-player only

Thanks in advance to anyone who plays it!

Hi there! I'm writing this feedback as I play the level (and not looking at my computer's screen), so bear with me.

Intro was very nicely done. not sure why there'd be water in hell, but it seems to work. the pushers were a nice obstacle and pushing the blocks down gave a real sense of danger with them. The level feels a bit empty somehow, maybe add some music? Section with the jumps and the sackbots underneath was also very nicely done. Water rise was a bit unexpected, but it was brilliant, I really loved the mechanical feel to it, especially later on. Perhaps don't have score multipliers so easy to get, just swimming up I got x3, which boosted my score by quite a lot, it's more rewarding for the player to work for the multiplier I find.

Again, sliding along while the water pushes the spikes up was great, never seen it before. Pushing the blocks to get up as cool, but it looked like one of them was going to topple over. Have you put something in place in case this does happen, because otherwise I think you'd have to restart the level. Climbing up the stairs was a bit tiring, and again I got a multiplier too easily, however the rotating platforms made up for it. That bit was certainly more challenging than the rest of the level, which for me was welcome.

Onto the pushers with the sackbots running around underneath. The first time was easy enough but the second, where you had to jump other things as well, was a welcome challenge. Again with the crushers, first time was easy, second much harder. The platforms moving in and out very quickly was great, though it lagged up a bit due to the large amount.

Onto the wavy crusher things, going along the top was great. Onto another water section, and the camera is very zoomed out, which looks awesome. This bit could perhaps use a bit more checkpoints.

And that's it. Final cutscene was cool.

Overall, a good level. The gameplay is genuinely fun, original and challenging, and for that you get a happy face and a heart. The water based gameplay especially was good, I haven't seen any good use of water for quite a while. It was also quite long, which is good to see.

However, the lack of music made it feel incredibly empty, and the visuals, while they did the job, weren't too amazing. I struggle with them myself, but my biggest tip would be to utilize all three layers. For example, instead of having the roof go over all 3, make 3 individual roofs, each slightly different, and put them in their own separate layer. It gives a much better sense of depth and makes the level look much nicer. Work on these and add a few checkpoints and you have a brilliant level on your hands, well done, can't wait for the next part.

For F4F, could you please play my level 'Snow Place Like Home (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=65285-Snow-Place-Like-Home&p=952430#post952430)? Thanks

EDIT: Just realised I had music turned off in Play Mode, so ignore everything I said about it not having music. Sorry >.<

Good level, and it is clear that there has been a lot of testing to get the timing of all these contraptions, I didn't get to the end, but I think I go fairly close. It is very hard but never seems impossible.

It does need some more music in it as it is very long. There is a lot of cool concepts here and I did enjoy it even though I did quit out. It just seems a little too long and I kept getting killed and thinking 'this has to be the last bit' and I get past that section and there is an even bigger obstacle!

Massive level and really challenging, I wasn't expecting it to be so long or difficult a little warning in the level description would be helpful.

Thanks for Playing Sun Lander!

Well, lets see here...

The Good:
great story
cool opening with the swimming
Interesting platforms and great use of a fiery death!

The "Less Good"
everything was really, really square. For a level like this, (seemingly in a cave) everything should be rounded off
too dark, sometimes hard to see
more variety, and by that i mean materials. you need to use more than juust a few materials

Thanks and have a good day!

To be honest, I kind of thought that this level was a bit boring.

I have to agree with xtremesackboy for most parts. I immediately saw the "Hellish" theme at the beginning of the level. The obstacles were hard but pretty fun.

The reason it was boring was because everything was all kind of uh.... square. There were also very few decorations that made sense to the level (the only thing I saw was crystals and clumps of eyeballs. what about the skulls and zombies, etc.??) Even though the level is supposed to be hard, it was a little bit too much at the rotating platforms part (4th picture from the top in first post). I was really frustrated and not including a checkpoint made it worse.

Other than that, it was okay!
