Problems with Motion.

Archive: 5 posts

Alright, here is my little project dilemma. I was hoping someone might be able to assist me with it.

The gist of the first challenge of my level is a simple one. The player must time a run under a spiked leg into a safe zone, and run past another spiked leg towards the goal. However, even with something as simple as this, I'm having a lot of issues. The winches are driving me crazy! I think I worked out a proper winch scheme, but I have no clue how to get it to do what I want.

My basic outline of the machine is that it is a polystyrene square on top of two spiked legs, each connected to the square by a winch. Do I need to connect the square itself to another winch? Because each time I run it, the square simply drops onto the legs, rendering the winches useless...

Any help, if anyone can figure out that incredibly vague explanation, would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you need pistons instead of winches for this...2008-12-27 00:12:00

You have two main problems here. One, you have to support the square on top with dark matter or something, or else it's going to do its best to fall down. You know, gravity.

The second is something that isn't really a problem, but seems to me like an overcomplication. Do you want the spiked legs to sway a lot, or would you like them to go straight up and down? Winches are going to cause them to sway back and forth while going up and down. A stiff piston, however, would make it go straight up and down.

Does that answer your question?

Ahh, crap... Thanks. A piston came to mind, but I thought it wasn't going to work out, seeing as, in the piston tutorial, the thing went sideways. Makes perfect sense, now that I think about it, though... Big oversight. However, I'll give it another try. Dark matter will hold it up, then?

EDIT: Thanks very much, guys! Pistons and dark matter did indeed solve my problems.
