Project Speed

Archive: 10 posts

Ever since LBP2 was released I've had plenty of ideas, but usually I end up being unwilling to work on them. This one however, I've already spent a few hours on.

Characters and plot

This is Haste (name subject to change). Hes a speedy little guy that loves adventure. He has been taking a break from adventure from a while and found himself a girlfriend. Everything seems great until his girlfriend is kidnapped by an unknown villain. When this happens, Haste finds himself back in the field of adventure again.

This is Haste's girlfriend (name to be determined). She loves adventure just as much as Haste and even rivals him in speed and skill. The reason why she was kidnapped is still unknown. Also her left eye is usually not like that. I seriously dont know what happened when I took the picture.

Gameplay:

1. As a huge sonic fan, this is going to be heavily inspired from Sonic games, however I will be incorporating elements from other games as well (mainly platformers).

2. I dont want this to be too simple of a platformer, so the entire stage will not simply be a trial to jump from one area to the next. I will try to add enemies in the way, multiple paths (the high path will usually be the quickest similar to sonic games), and plenty of actions such as using a quick zip line.

3. I'm not exactly sure how the health system will work. Sonic games usually have rings, but I'm looking for something a bit different. I dont want it to be too basic, but not too complex either.

4. This will obviously contain multiple levels, and I plan on connecting them via a hub world. The hub world will be similar to sonic generations where sonic would run around in the 2D space and enter the levels from there. Here is a video to make it more clear.

5. As for the levels, I want there to be at least 3, with at least 2 acts within the level. At the end of the level you will unlock a prize sticker. You will need all the stickers from each level to unlock the final level/boss. As for level design, I have a forest type, snow type, city type, and space type levels in mind.

Whats been done and what you can do:

1. An introduction stage where you (as in your sackboy, not Haste) receives the game from a neighbor is about 85% done.

2. The sackbot for Haste is being worked on. I'm not the best with logic but I have gotten his spin jump completed.

3. I'm not a great level creator by any means. In fact the first and last level I published was back in Littlebigplanet 1. I have the motivation to go through with this but I would appreciate a bit of extra help. Beta testers, and creators are welcome to help. I would really love to see this project go through and I really think it could be a big hit if it goes in the direction im going for. Any help would be appreciated.

If you actually read all that, thanks a lot, and I really hope this project can turn into something great.

Made a bit of progress today. Worked on the Sackbot and gave him a spin jump, sprint/sprint jump, and started working on the wall jump. Wish I could have gotten more done, but I haven't had too much creating experience so this is still a learning process for me. I'm hoping to finish the sackbot first so I can make the levels easier since I will know what he is capable of.2011-12-03 07:28:00

Worked on the sackbot even more. Think I'm almost done with it.

Added a wall jump, and the ability to automatically grab certain objects when coming in contact with them. Also fixed a few bugs, including one where the sackbot would still be spinning if he grabbed an object while he was still in the air during his spin jump.

Added a stomp, press circle while in the air to stomp straight towards the ground quickly. Similar to the ground pound in mario games or the power stomp in modern sonic games. Messed with it a bit and made it to where I could destroy a column of three crates with one stomp. Gonna try to incorporate this into gameplay to make the levels more interesting.

I'm debating on if I should keep the sprint button or not. The sackbot is already at 150% speed, which is fairly quick. Sprint makes him a lot faster than that, but it just seems a bit too fast. I could always lower the speed, but if I lower it any more it seems like it ruins the point of sprinting. Gonna have to decide on this later.

Worked on the sackbot a bit more. Fixed a few bugs in my logic and added a new feature. The sackbot now bounces off of balloons and pops them, giving him a bit of extra air time. He also does a small pose when he h its the balloon.

I also added a video to youtube that shows what the sackbot is capable of so far. Hes nearly done. All I need is to add a bounce effect when he hits enemies and maybe a few extra things, but other than that I cant see what else I can add besides level specific animations, so I could probably start building the actual levels now.

Love the concept so far, if anything a more worked on costume, as it looks very plan...

Thanks. I was hoping I wouldn't be the only one posting in this thread... lol.

I actually like the look of the costume, maybe its just me. I wanted to keep it pretty basic... but I do admit that the girl has a much better costume... Do you have any suggestions on what I could do?

Also another update. I added another microchip to the sackbot so now he will bounce off of enemies as well, gaining more air time. I think the sackbot is pretty much done with the exception of maybe changing his costume a bit.

I've also decided to make the sackbot follow the normal littlebigplanet rules of death. I think a health system would be too much since I'm trying to keep this simple, yet fun.

Level creating should start soon. I'm going to try to give all the stages a very unique feel, so we wont just be running in a different colored forest on every new area. Again I really dont consider myself that great of a level creator. I'm pretty lacking in the visuals department and I'm new to making enemies and its going to take a while to get used to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll make sure you get credit where it is due.

So far I plan on using the standard littlebigplanet songs. I'm really not good with this games music sequencer, so unless I got someone who would be willing to make music for these levels, I dont plan on using custom songs. You would rather have preset music than terrible custom music right?

Lot of work here and it seems to. E coming along nicely for you. As for the funny eye its because the sack people don't blink both eyes at the same time.2011-12-06 05:32:00

Bit of a new costume design. What do you guys think?

Also tinkering with the sackbot a bit. Thinking of making it to where he slowly speeds up gaining to top speed the more he runs.

Could have sworn I posted here a while ago... anyway.

I've been out of town for two weeks, so I haven't had much time to work on this. I just got back Monday. Work on this is definitely slowed down, but this project is far from canceled. Any form of help would be great motivation. I've been getting a bit distracted with other games since I got back home.

Also for voice actors, I'm really not planning on having any. I want the game itself to do the talking, sort of like a classic game, where the characters actions told the story.
