What is fun?

Archive: 10 posts

I've played a lot of LBP levels, and I've seen a range of different ideas and gameplay types. It seems like I only come across two types of levels. The first type, the most common, is the type of level that people throw together with little effort and use to try to get attention. These include copied levels and empty "quick finish" levels, which I'm pretty sick of. And the second type, which you may disagree with, I feel are the levels that people put too much detail into. People are so immersed in creating advanced logic and stunning visuals that a lot of them seem to forget about gameplay. I see a lot of levels that look amazing, yet if you take away the visuals they look and play the same as anything else.

Now I'm not saying all levels are like that (I know there are a lot of talented creators in this community that do make fun levels). But I just feel like it's rare that I find a level that's truly fun, that'll make me want to play again and again. But the thing is, when I do find really fun levels, I can rarely describe why. That's just how they are. These levels just seem to stick out in my head, like "Complicated Simplicity III" which I've mentioned many times on this forum. It has no fancy visuals and no crazy advanced logic; it's just fun. And I wish more levels were like that.

So, discuss elements in LBP /2 that you've found are fun, that make levels stick out in your mind. What makes certain levels so charming?

Yeah, that basically sums it up.

Fun is a matter of taste and perspective. Nothing else. Don't think too hard about it.

Ah yes. Everyone has different approaches to what they want to achieve with their levels in LBP. By the logic of "I only like whats fun" you rule out several specific level types including films, costume, music, and art galleries, as well as tutorials, object and font giveaways, could't be considered "fun" because they don't have any real gameplay.

There are some people that just want to make and play basic LBP platformers. Levels that everyone knows how to play and can easily jump into something they are used to and will enjoy. Then there are those creators that use LBP as an alternative to other game developing software, and try to push the limits of what is possible in LBP as well as make a completely unique and original concept. These levels are usually more "impressive" than "fun".

In most cases I would agree that "over-doing" it with logic hampers the fun factor of a level. I am completely guilty of this myself, but look at these types of levels much differently. It says a lot when someone has created a concept and gameplay more or less from scratch and customized each part of the experience, and neutral rating or especially booing a level as such just because it wasn't fun is quite a slap in the face to the creator.

I relate the popularity of certain levels in LBP like the popularity of most smart phone games. What is popular on smart phones? Absurdly basic games that are only supposed to keep you entertained for a little while while you're in line at a food place or waiting. Games like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. This is a personal opinion but I HATE that essentially simple flash games are incredibly popular on mobile devices while there are incredibly in-depth games and even MMO's on the same devices. The LBP equivilant is basic platformers are popular, while tech savy top-down and sackbot levels are often not popular.

Heh, when LBP2 was announced and I saw that you could map out your own controls with controlinators I thought. "Woah! You can map your own controls!? Who wouldn't want to do that!?" ...Turns out almost everyone and I still have my foot in my mouth because of that. The funny thing is.. I admit that I usually do have more fun when playing basic platformers with really fast gameplay such as Riki's, Alley_cats and LFiers.

No but really, everyone has different opinions of fun. If you have to think about it, maybe its straying away from fun?
