Is there a secret to getting plays from LBP2 community?

Archive: 15 posts

Now, im not talking about my levels not getting no plays what so ever, even if i advertise the crap out of them on multiple different sites, and in LBP2 in general. But I notice something from levels on cool pages. There seems to be a trick or something unknown that makes levels get plays like crazy Now I saw a lvl from the cool pages which was the worst lvl ever, tho then again almost everything from cool pages suck, but any way I look at it to see when it was first publish and it said 1hr ago. btw the level had like almost 2000+ plays. So then I look at the level makers profile hearts and it was like 120 hearts. And he or she had other levels that had 100 plays and 32 hearts but any way, So then I wonder if there was a secret way to get plays from the community....To me I dont get how a lvl that was publish a hr ago get up to 2000+ plays almost, its just beyond me. Any way what are your thoughts?2011-11-28 20:35:00

I Think If It reaches the top Of The Cool Pages, It will get A ton Of Plays.
You need To, when It's first published get a number of people to play it...at once. (i've seen a lvl 5th spot on the cool pages...under a 100 plays ;/)
Then you Need No boo's from That...If you get more people than doing it it will continue to rise up the cool pages. this Is where the huge number Of Plays is coming from.
Hope that answers it...It's all about as soon as it's published

I think it matters about simplicity, awe factor, and gameplay, to make it to the Cool Pages.

Simplicity: Make sure the level is easy enough to play for anyone to play, don't place any signs or text in the level to tell the player what to do, the flow of the level should be simple enough for anyone to understand. For example, pretend the player can't read and they have no clue what an arrow sign is, the level should flow so naturally that it simply leads players to the next area, and to the next, with no reading skills needed. Point A to point B.

Awe-factor: Of course, your level shouldn't be so simple that it's boring, there needs to be something interesting about the level, without sacrificing much simplicity. For example, you can make a level about an average city interesting by making aliens suddenly attack it, etc.
It doesn't have to be events in the level though, it can be gameplay mechanics, interesting artistic detail, and unique settings that attract players too.

Gameplay (platforming): Challenging gameplay, that would normally push common players away, isn't bad. A lot of players can actually accomplish some tough gameplay. Just make sure that it's easily beatable, and not based on "random events". For example, don't put the player in a room full of flying plasma and expect them to dodge it, they have no way to time when the plasma will hit or what to do against it except run through the plasma like a madman.
All gameplay should likely be set to a timer like a pattern a player can identify. The player should be able to examine the environment and come up some kind of plan to get through it.

A gameplay obstacle that's tough shouldn't require a lot of tries to get through it, it just requires some good thinking to do.

Mind that these suggestions are for the Cool Pages though, some great levels don't make it to the cool pages because of difficulty or complexity that many players will dislike, it doesn't mean the levels are bad, they're unfortunately just not preferred.

How do people still not know how cool pages work.. It is frequency of plays after publication for a week ONLY. No level on cool pages is over 7 days old and quality, level hearts, rates and reviews do not matter at all. If you want to get on cool pages, get as many people as you can to play your level right after it's published. This is why having several hearts is crucial to getting on cool pages.2011-11-28 22:10:00

I use this method: Play the game with friends as many times as you can, exchangeing the friends every play, best time to upload is neat midnight of CET. At the end it all depends on raiting so your level need to be good and don't have what people don't like2011-11-28 22:28:00

The garbage levels you see on the cool pages are luck. Think about how many levels get published every hour, and how many of them get on the cool pages. Theres not really a trick, its just that those select few levels were lucky enough to have people play them.2011-11-29 13:49:00

it isn't luck in the slightest, a lot of levels use well establish brands to grab attention, it's no secret, it simply works.

Just get all your friends to play the level when you publish it. The more friends/followers you have, the more people will play it when you publish, the faster your level will get to the cool pages.2011-11-29 14:20:00

Not at all, people who care and make a good levels get to the top, those who stuck on lower parts of cool pages are usually those who believe in luck and throw level without thinking how to make people play it because they think luck gonna help them. Fact you might have luck or bad luck but this is system with rules that you can take advantage in the end.

Hmmmm well I actually believe that my levels are good and nicely detailed but I get little few plays. I find it a bit backwards tho, my ugly teddy film got to cool pages and I made it in a hr and it SUCKED, but my actual good levels just get left behind.

Obviously it's not the quality of the level that gets it more plays, unless a really popular LBP creator hearts it and all the people that hearted that creator see that they liked it and play it, because people don't know how good a level is until they've already clicked on it. So giving your level quality won't necessarily get it to the cool pages. It has to have something that will make people want to play it before they even know what the level will look like. I guess like the title or badge, but that doesn't seem to help me either.

I got to the cool pages ONCE, about 10 minutes after the move dlc came out. I had made a level that I wanted to make move compatible before the dlc was released. The day it was supposed to be released, I waited online until the store updated, bought the pack, tweaked my level as fast as I could, and was one of the first to publish a move level. All the trophy hunters that wanted the "play 25 move levels" trophy jumped on it and it got to the cool pages. So my advice, even if it's kind of cheap, for getting to the cool pages would be to wait for a big DLC to come out and be one of the first to make a level with that kind of theme.
