It almost looks like a reference to Pixar's UP. I've used blender, but it didn't like me. It kept turning planes inside out, so the texture wouldn't work, and the plane would be invisisble, etc.

Select the entire model or just the problem area and Ctrl+N Recalculates the normals, you can also select it from the tools menu. I can see how that would get annoying

It's definitely a complicated program. I've noticed that newest build is a bit easier to work with however.
