SpeedCreate! A new badly named feature! :)

(Thanks to Mirrorsun for the fantastic banner!)

New episodes every friday!

Hello LBPCers! In speedcreate I create stuff, record it, speed it up a bunch (nobody wants to watch me creating for hours and hours now do they ) and talk over it! The final product goes by the name SpeedCreate and I hope you'll like it!

Anyways! Without further ado, the first episode!

As sexy and enticing your voice is, not studying is a no-no.

I think that Media Molecule did a sped up video of making a level in LBP1, it could be fun if we all shared videos of ourselves SpeedCreating all kinds of objects and levels. The evil dark matter army is certainly very interesting, although I don't know how you can pull off the story character idea. But meh, what can't he pull off.
Make moar plocks!

The yawn at 2:36 was so epic.

Love the intro, glad you added it. I like how this episode is a direct continuation of the level from part 1 and finally your voice is perfect for commentary

All in all, loving the series so far

depending on how many of these you make, i might start a small section in my tutorial thread just for you

Absolutely spiffing. I can rarely finish a level, so a SpeedCreate for me would be three minutes of actually working on a level, then a musical montage of me watching videos of cats on YouTube for about two hours, then another minute of working on a level, and then deleting it. 2011-12-15 08:24:00

Hey Mnniska, how 'bout instead of the button dissolving those attachers and falling, you do an LBP1-bouncepad-type mechanism to fling your character back up onto the cart. (BTW, for those viewers who say, "But L1N3R1D3R, couldn't he use a normal bouncepad?", this will keep the surface that the button is on looking tidy.)2012-01-08 22:02:00

Let me know what villain you like the most!

A. A puzzle-witch who wants your help to solve her huge puzzle.
B. A spider that collects stuff and wants you to find an item.
C. An evil organisation who turns sacks into pies/kill sacks and stuff them..and sell them.
D. [Your own idea here!]

Hey there Mnniska, loving it so far! Just wondering, what do you record with?

I am recording with a dazzle + a stolen program to make the hardware work for my mac Basically you just split the white/red/yellow output from the tv into two signals and have one to go the dazzle which goes to the computer and the other one to the PS3. It's not the best quality, but it gets the job done.

Very happy to hear you are enjoying the episodes people! I really didn't think people would stick around for my lame commentary at the start, but it seems like that is the strong part of speedcreate now paha

Hey guy, I just watched the last 5 or so videos ya made. nice work. you make a very nice LBP-story mode like style. and i have no idea how people like you can create so fast. it takes me ages to come up with game play. *mew I had not seen your videos until just today really. my friend Luos told me to check out your videos sometime a while back. there pretty fun to watch. *mew ...Though i'm not sure they'll help me understand how to create-faster or come up with ideas for gameplay better, but that's just how i am, i don't learn that easy. ...And i find it crazy you can get so much work done in just 2 to 5 hours you say you do. i can create 8 hours a day for 3 days and not end up making as much as you in the 5 or whatever hours you said you spend normally in the videos. *mew2012-02-04 20:03:00

So much mew! @w@

Thank you for checking out the videos. I actually only spend a maximum of two hours on each video. One hour of creating represents seven minutes and thirty seconds of video, as I speed it up about eight times. Maybe I will ry to give some tips a bout developing gameplay, either in an episode or in an article, we'll see. Thank you for the comment, anyway!

I could totally give mine out sometime. I figured there were other levels giving them out already with more complex and awesome typeonators so I haven't given it out yet. Seems like it's a pretty high demand though, might as well give it out in my next level

Thanks for watching doods!

This is pretty cool. I just wish my internet wasn't slow right now so I could watch the video without buffering every 5 seconds. Anyways I was wondering what kind of planning do you go through before a level? Do you draw it out?

EDIT: Also thought you could probably name what the video is about instead of just episode 1, episode 2, episode 15, etc.

That wouldn't be too bad either. I mostly survive on noodles and pizza, so that'd be a welcome change.

Fixed it! And thanks dood. They're mostly drawn in the math classes during school.

EDIT:

The video embedding doesn't work, so I'm forced to watch it on YouTube. I'll be right back with how I think about it!

EDIT: The review!

Firstly, yes, it's pronounced "Line Rider". When I originally made my account in May 2010, I was addicted to a game called Linerider (http://www.linerider.org/play.php/). I wanted to make a username like that, but the username "Linerider" was already taken for obvious reasons. So I capitalized it, put it in leet (changing the I's to 1's and the E's to 3's) and that's how I got my username! Thanks for mentioning me in the episode, by the way.

Secondly, It's going to be 42 more episodes, if the project is 50 episodes long. And if you finish it next May at this rate, you should consider 2 episodes per week.

Third...ly? If you say it like that: Thirdly, the ending to that episode is just hilarious! I love how the Teainator has emotions!

Overall: 10/10 (for every episode )

I'm not sure. It takes quite a while for me to get an episode episode out so managing to produce two episodes per week would be a challenge. First I need to record the footage, which takes at least two hours and even more if I have to stop and sketch. Then the video ave to process for about 45 minutes. The editing takes about half an hour and then there's 20 more minutes of processing. In total that's about three hours and 30 minutes.
It's possible to do in the middle of the summer, but once school starts I will have to strictly only release one episode per week.

In other news, episode 26 out now!

In this episode, I create the cutscene which introduces the (somewhat shallow) story in our wonderful adventure! I also talk of my new minigame Stickerix and create some somewhat mediocre gameplay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M_Yd3_AAbY

Let me know what you think!

Oh, I just hit 20 hours by the way. How long do you guys think it'll take before the level is finally done? I'd guess it's going to take about 87.5 hours, what is your guess?

In this totally magical bonus episode I decorate the gameplay motif I constructed back in episode 7 with the new fancy style. Meanwhile I talk of the differences the early and the present style had, I also go over player rewards a bit.

Do I? What stickers are the obvious ones in this case? xD

Right now I don't really have that many proper plans for the scenery. I know that the first part of the level will be played out in the tea party, but the box giant kingdom is unknown to me.
Anyway, for the tea party the plan is pretty simple: Purple floor, strict shapes, blue rolling hills, no roof, cute characters and A LOT of tea. Oh, there's also that yellow pipe. You can't forget the yellow pipe!

I just take whatever stickers I think fit the scenery the most. In this case, the blue text thingy worked well so I used that. I actually have a huge hearted list with all of the stickers that have interesting and clear colours. That way I can just go there to get my colour without having to access the HUGE sticker section.

What I mean is that you very rarely use the block colours. Is it because they add some mood and form to the colour? Like when you add dashes of smudges and the like. I'd be really interested to know what your thought processes are when you are creating your distinctive look. (perhaps you could add little explanations in your videos). I'm hooked on making things look solid and real, while you go out of your way to make things look otherworldly. You create, delete, create delete, alter altogether, discard and create, delete all the time. Would you consider yourself a perfectionist or are you deliberately trying to avoid perfection? For your uniquely stylised creations

One of the reasons I ask that is because I AM a perfectionist and believe this could be holding me back.

For your uniquely stylised creations

One of the reasons I ask that is because I AM a perfectionist and believe this could be holding me back.

I do not use the block colours because..well, they're just one straight colour, you know? A blue sticker generally contains ten shades of blue instead of just one. I find the scenery to be a bit bare when I just use one-colour stickers. Sure, you can fix it up with a dirt smudge or something similair, but I prefer to have different shades of colour right off the bat. However I have seen amazing-looking levels using one colour stickers, it's just not my thing at the moment.

As for me being a perfectionist, I don't think so. There are so much stuff that I could add to make the experience Thaaat little bit more polished and enjoyable, but I do not because I'm just too lazy. I do want the Land Of Cloth levels to look very pretty though, I'm aiming to achieve this cute, yet strict look..not sure.
I'm going to say it like this; I want it to look really good and follow my vision, but aiming for perfection only slowes you down; in the end you'll look at your work and go "This isn't good enough!" and get rid of it.

Avoiding perfection/not thinking too much is a great (and fun!) way to create scenery in my opinion. I do not do this in this level, I have a vision of the land of cloth/tea party area that I want to follow and realize. However if you look at If The Gardens Had Pixie Sticks or Flowerbucket you will notice that the scenery is way less grid-y and more wild and colourful; that's because I let go in those levels and just..created. Without thinking about what anyone, nor me would think. I constantly confronted myself with accusations of how little attention I payed to the level or how the gameplay was mediocre and would not last, but it was very well worth it as letting go really..opens you up in a way.

Man, answering these questions is a challenge! Doing my best here, sorry

Cheers for your answers, Mnniska. Yeah, the one thing I'm going to make a huge effort with on LBPVita is to try to just let go. My approach to everything is to try and be as good as I can be, but it's sometimes a crippling endeavour... The perfect example is that I only have one level published and I'm stuck on the second. But I have many ideas for LBPVita that don't require so much planning, so hopefully I'll be staring at the Vita screen instead of staring at the wall.2012-08-25 09:29:00

I'm in the same boat, actually.
Well, not with the lack of levels, but perhaps in my lacking productivity.

I am tired of spending four months on every mayor level, so on LBPVita I'm going to try and produce shorter levels focused on stuff I find funny. That means really stupid level themes, like a level about potato's, the life os AmazingFlyingPoo's chair or other strange ideas I dream up.

Oh yeah! I published a new episode of SpedPlay yesterday. It's pretty silly, check it out!

Wow you make creating look so easy!!

I have a question do you plan out levels on paper before hand? If you do then does it help with creating?

I have a question!

Could you make a tutorial on how to make a character? You're amazing at it, and I'm sorta meh.

Also, you spelled "unfortunately" incorrectly.

Do you think that LBP has sharpened your mind for School or do you think that it's actually a distraction?2012-09-03 10:59:00

Sorry to hear that Sackpapoi! It's probably because I threw some music in there I shouldn't have. I really should look over those rules..

Really fun questions so far by the way! Can't wait to answer them!

Hey you guys! Long time no see eh?

I took the time to do some new speedcreate stuff! The level in question being created is actually already finished and can be found here:
http://lbp.me/v/qpcjtf4

I took care to record all of the 24 hour creation process and have now created magical speedcreate goodness out of the footage, woo!
In this first episode of season two, I make the basic gameplay logic and first bits of gameplay while talking about the importance of planning your level properly!

In which I make more gameplay and talk of new gameplay, the importance of fun, planting ideas into peoples heads and the vast knowledge contained within comphermc.
I will be pumping out at least one per week from now on, even if only Train Guy cares <3

I have to confess that this is the first of these I've watched, not being a creator myself, but it was really entertaining stuff. I'd imagined it would be much more logic tutorialish (new word ) but your commentary was anything but dry, lol. I have to say, though, that the most impressive bit for me was the way you just bashed out those trees at the end. I know it was speeded up, but even so the confidence and ease with you conjured them up was cool to watch.

Thank you!

Thanks for giving it a shot even if you suspected it was not up your alley. I pretty much never ever talk about logic on speedcreate as other peeps have got that stuff covered already. It's mostly design thoughts and other random talking Stay around til' after episode 5 or six for moar scenery stuff. That's when I attempt to give the level some color and stuff!

Again, thanks for giving it a watch, glad to hear people are enjoying them.

Hey Mnniska!
When I was seen this in my subcription feed on youtube I was Like "YES Finally" Dude I watched you speed create series religiously like it was a Tv show man. I love watching you create its always great to watch another artist throw things together. Im impresseed as always.

I kind of used your Speed create title for my video in LBPkarting, I hope you dont mind ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8KYjYKDGlM

Glad you like em'! I will continue to pump these out until the level's done, so expect quite a lot of speedcreate from here on out!

I have no problem at all with your own verision of speedcreate. I actually really like how I'm able to inspire people to try out stuff like this and ejoyed your own verision a lot.
If I may, I have a couple suggestions for your kartcreate thing..
> Make the speed faster. I usually go with 8x which may not be optimal, but atm your video seems to be at 2x which seems a tiny bit slow. Especially since you had trouble filling the time with relevant commentary.
> I'd also love a soundtrack list, since some of those songs were smooth like peanut better. Nice going there with Bonobo especially. What was the first song?

Again, thanks for watching man. More coming next week

Alright I will definitley do that for the for the next video that I have coming out this series. As for the sound track you can never go wrong with Bonobo, He is my favorite artist by the way, he is a list of songs that I used:

Emkay - Bonobo
Wayward Bob - Bonobo
Flutter - Bonobo
My Advice, Pt 2 - The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra

Again thanks for watching, I will definitely taking your advice. Thanks a lot

I don't know if you've actually answered to this question before... But what program do you use to transform your recordings into Time-Lapse?

I use iMovie. I know it's not exactly the most professional editing software, but it makes things pretty easy to edit. I did try Final Cut, but the video would have worse quality and weird black edges appeared on youtube. It's probably something one can work around with the proper skills but for me iMovie does that from the start and works just fine

New episode up! In episode 8 I create more scenery while also adding some sweet sweet gameplay. Meanwhile I talk of said scenery and gameplay creation, create marathon 4, SpedPlay, and my new lil' LBP project.
Check it out here:
