A multi-story, callable elevator tutorial

Thought I'll share this small nugget of knowledge with you. Basically, what I'm going to tell you is how to build an elevator that can be automatically called at will to any floor of your choice. Surprisingly, I haven't seen too many elevators of that kind.

The trick lies in the direction controller. When you press a button/otherwise choose a floor, a tag activates in the destination. The direction follower (a physical rod w/ a spring bolt and a tag follower chip) turns to point towards the tag as much as it can, causing it to hit the corresponding physical trigger (piece of material w/ a touch sensor, connected to a selector, which controls the direction of the piston), determining the direction where the cab should go.

After the cab arrives to the destination, another, very precise tag sensor is activated by the floor tag, stopping the elevator to the correct spot. Pure and simple

Tell me what do you think

I think you're making this far more hard than it needs to be. Just hold the elevator in place horizontally with material, but allow it to move vertically. Then place a follower (tool bag, movers) on it and use a selector with each output going to a tag on each story. Then use things to switch between the story on the selector.2011-11-21 02:35:00

When thinking of it.. yeah, that sounds a bit more simple ; Well then, the advantage in my method is that you do not necessarily need a tight-fitting shaft, like you do with your method (+ the esthetic advantages in certain cases, with clanking mechanical things and visible pistons )

with the follower method you dont need a shaft either, just add a gyro to keep it upright and you dont need any walls at all2011-11-21 15:26:00

Hmm.. yeah, it will work. Just that I want my elevator to look realistic (which means seeing the piston/the winch). Same principle also applies to many other gadgets and gizmos of mine

you can still use a winch or piston for visual purposes, just set the strength of them to 0%, and extend the max range past your furthest floor, that way you will still see them but still have the follower setup control things to make things so much easier and stop at each level neater2011-11-21 19:58:00
