Music galleries: How pretty do they need to be...?

Archive: 17 posts

I was just wondering in passing how much value players put upon the visual presentation of music levels/showcases. I've started mulling this over since I've been trying to update my own music gallery (mainly to eradicate the irritating glitches it has), and I decided to take the opportunity to "spruce up" my gallery a bit (admittedly, I was inspired by some of the snazzier galleries out there, like Velvet--Audio's, comishguy's and Festerd_Jester's). I've found that quality presentation and style isn't what people come to a music level FOR, but it can add charm and a sense of fun to a showcase and makes the whole thing a bit more memorable...

Does anyone agree? Do you like your music galleries plain and simple, or whizz-bang crazy awesome with pretty pictures and special effects? How much effort should a music creator make??

EDIT: I think I may have been thinking of schm0 when I said comishguy. But it's all good.

I don't think it needs to be too extravogant, the main thing for a music level (in my opinion) is accessability. It needs to be easy to activate and gain (if you're giving them away as prizes) each track. Obviously, you don't want it to be untidy. If you're music is quite genre specific (eg retro, fantasy etc) you could design your level with a theme that matches.

I think all you really need is a controllinator and a way to select each track. schm0's music showcase is another one you should check out, it's fairly simple in terms of design, but it works.

Or you could just stick a load of bounce pads down, like in tabycatmeows level.

EDIT: As long as the music is good, it shouldn't really matter too much. Think of all the unattractive well-respected musicians

I actually do think it matters. Let me use an example I learned the other day: in the US many years ago, there was a Presidential debate. The two presidents, Kennedy and Nixon, where going head to head live on TV and radio. The Presidential campaign was getting ready to end, and Nixon was the favorite; most people thought Nixon would become the next President. HOWEVER, during the debate, everyone who listened to it on the radio said Nixon won the debate; but everyone who watched it in TV said Kennedy won the debate. Why? Kennedy had a professional hair stylist and makeup artist work on him, and he bought a brand new suit just for the occasion. Nixon, however, was wearing an old wrinkled suit, no makeup, and he was sweating like a marathon runner on the sunny side of Mercury. After that debate, Kennedy's ratings went up, even though it was clear to anyone that only listened to it that Nixon won, and Kennedy went on to win the election. How did he win? Women. After watching him on TV, many women changed sides and they ended up being the deciding hand in the election. President John F Kennedy won the election because he looked better than Nixon.

SO I kinda got off track there, pretty long story...Anyway, the point is, if someone looks good, people tend to like stuff more. It just... Triggers something in the brain. They get more attracted to it. If you want higher ratings on your music level, Id say yes, spend more time working on visuals.

People are less prone to hate something if it makes them horny, so I'd say visuals are pretty important if you want good ratings.2011-11-17 13:50:00

So in other words, his level should be extremely sexy so everyone likes it?

Yessir! I recommend bikini/speedo models dancing to the music.

I don't think you need anything too fancy at all. It is all about the music in these kinds of levels anyway. But yeah, there needs to be a decent amount of effort put into the visuals, even if they're pretty simple.2011-11-17 15:14:00

I think it does matter, but shouldn't be the focus...knowwhatimsayin?
It shouldn't put you off the level anyway!
Put a decent bit of effort in, but don't stress too much

I'm putting an arcade in my music gallery!

I thought your galleries were fine Weirdy. I may be restating my review but I thought it was put together something like a scrapbook, with all the pics and separate album jukeboxes. No real need for a fancy menu type thing.

I love the music galleries when they have good music. Most of them are just the run of the mill type where you move right and try out different songs. It gets boring.

If you want to do something like that, use only one or two materials, and a constant theme between "stations". Make it clean and easy to use. The music should be the focus, but the first thing people experience in a level is the visual aspect of it, so make that visual appeal showcase the music.

One thing I have not seen, and I think would go over really well, is a media player style implementation. use sticker panels to create a track list, standard player buttons, and maybe toss in some visualizations if you have the room.

That could be a really interesting project and would make a nice level kit for people to download and use.

You don't have to put a lot of effort into it to make it look nice. Just a black background with the controls and a menu would work for me.2011-11-18 12:22:00

This sums up your answer quite well. As ATM is pointing out, no decorations work for some, while as others need something to see while theyre listening to your exellent music. If it were my decision, I would make it look to fit the theme of my music and try my hardest to make every inch of my music showcase level as captivating as possible. To be completely honest, most of the people that will be playing your level will listen for an adverage of about 2 minutes before they get bored and leave. (Taking into account that a majority of the community are in between the ages of 8-13.) So adding some pretty visuals could help make those players want to stay and explore whilst expeiriencing your wonderful tunes. It would also leave a big "wow" factor when giving the player an impression of you as a good visualist AND a good Musician.
But, this is just my opinion. At the end of the day, it all boils down to what you think would work best for your level.

I think they better be as pretty as the music.
Probably people can distracted by bad looks and rate down music or vice versa but will be hard to resist some nice produced piece of music complimented by a beautifuly decorated level.

If it's not an Advant Garde work of visual genius, I will get it removed and deleted forever.....

Not really obviously, but if the visuals are an eye sore, it makes it hard to listen.

No, it just has to be functional.
No overlapping magic mouths, etc.
