Severe computer error!
Archive: 15 posts
I know that quite a few of you people on here are quite tech savvy, so hopefully you'll be able to help me. Earlier on I downloaded the steam version of Gish from the Humble Bundle. When I loaded up the game it was fine, but when I started on a level the game, and my computer froze. Nothing would work, so I had to switch it off manually. However, my computer will not boot up when I turn it on. The computer seems to turn on and start whirring, but the monitor recieves no input signal. Please help me! | 2011-11-10 21:35:00 Author: FlipMeister Posts: 631 |
What version of OS? PC? etc.. Beyond that.. did you check the cable is seated properly? Weird you don't even see CMOS bootup stuff. Can you try monitor on another system just to make sure the monitor didn't go wacky and have us chasing our tails on everything else? | 2011-11-10 22:26:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
if you're computer doesn't work, how did you post? | 2011-11-11 03:55:00 Author: junk-Warrior7 Posts: 276 |
if you're computer doesn't work, how did you post? Computers are not the only way to access LBPC. There are other means, such as mobile devices. I think the Playstation 3 can too. | 2011-11-11 05:07:00 Author: alaskadawn Posts: 101 |
Thanks for the responses so far. To answer your questions... My computer is Windows vista 32-bit. I'm posting on my ipod. And I'll check the monitor later today. I've unplugged the computer at the socket now, just in case it will miraculously help it work again. | 2011-11-11 05:59:00 Author: FlipMeister Posts: 631 |

Is your PC actually booting up and sounding like it normally does, just you're not seeing anything? Do you at least see the BIOS screen briefly when you first turn it on? | 2011-11-11 18:05:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
Do you at least see the BIOS screen briefly when you first turn it on? ^ This. Assuming you don't see anything at all, then... If the computer boots as far as the BIOS, you'll get a single beep, in which case the problem is probably with the monitor or connecting cable. If there's a hardware fault preventing booting as far as the BIOS, you typically get a "beep code" which is a series of beeps telling you what the problem is, which would be one of... missing or faulty CPU missing or faulty memory missing or faulty graphics card ...which is the bare minimum required to get as far as the BIOS. If you don't get any beeps, then it's most likely the motherboard at fault. | 2011-11-11 19:01:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
When the computer starts up, the monitor recieves no signal. However, the computer itself makes a beep quicker than it normally does. I think I might try to upload a video of it from the spare computer, so you can have a better idea of what I'm seeing. Or, on the contrary, not seeing. | 2011-11-12 06:28:00 Author: FlipMeister Posts: 631 |
It might make more sense to first stick the monitor on the other system to make sure your current monitor is actually working. You also never stated if you have checked cables etc.. | 2011-11-12 10:49:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |

If nothing ever appears on the monitor, a video ain't gonna help. If for some bizarre reason the HDD boot is enabling monitor power saving, you could try booting from a bootable CD/DVD. It's probably gonna be a case of swapping out hardware to find the problem, so try another monitor/cable if possible. If your graphics card has multiple outputs, e.g. SVGA/DVI/HDMI, then try a different output. Might help to give more info about the hardware, e.g. What make/model is the motherboard and CPU? How much RAM in how many sticks? What cards (if any) are plugged into its PCI or other buses? | 2011-11-12 15:52:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Unplug everything but mouse, keyboard monitor and power cable from the computer. Then you unplug the power cable, wait 10~ 20 minutes to let the power drain out, then plug it back in and try to turn it on. Hard shut downs usually do that ti me. | 2011-11-12 16:18:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |

Another thought is recovery mode and rolling back to the last save point. For example if your new game trashed all your video drivers etc, the last save point could bring it back. You can usually do that off of a CD boot... ..but then again, without checking if the monitor is working, you're just making things complicated. lol | 2011-11-12 16:34:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
