An Unexpected Turn

Archive: 21 posts

Well that time as come when I bare my ineptitude to the LBP2 community and pray for a kind hearted sole to forgive my inadequacies. This is a simple level with little in the way of invention and few pitfalls, but what it does well (hopefully) is demonstrate my keen eye for detail; although to be perfectly honest this offering may appear somewhat myopic.

How do you make this snazzy? i had it up once but what you see here was there also so i went back in and deleted this... but the snazzy bit disappeared too.

Lol the sanzzy comes with putting in the level code into a showcase or F4F post. I think you can still do it by editing your post here and clicking on 'go advanced'. You should have options to make this a F4F or level showcase. It will then pull the info from your level and place it here. Also add in some images for some added 'snazzy'. Go and play your level, whilst in your level take 3 photos and then find them in your pop-it and hit 'upload', they will then appear in the level preview on lbp.me for you to use.

EDIT: I see you've found the pictures so I'll delete the oen I put in as they're the same.

Yes, you just republish over the top. But I'm not sure if you can change anything in the title of the level but I guess you're title is fine. Keep a back up as well just incase.

lol. thanks. it's weird don't you think? by the way, when i want to make adjustments, do i just republish over the top of the existing publication?2011-11-10 13:09:00

Yes Gribble
Also, in the pics...did you use move materials, or just edit LBP2/LBP1 materials with decorations, other materials etc.?

can you explain a little clearer. when you say 'move' so you mean materials from the 'Move' pack? and what do you mean by 'edit' materials with decorations? i do know that the thermo is fit to burst and judging by the fact that 9 people have played it and only 2 people are on the scoreboard, i think i'll probably have to edit it a little later. i think i know the problem if their getting stuck... or just leaving because they hate ME! *wipes away virtual tear*

Ah Yes, Materials from the move pack! sorry about not getting that across clearly!
By "edit" I mean did you add on decorations. this was mainly directed at the first picture, with the green moss on the walls...

yeah, it's strips of the new wavy line material with the moss covering some of it to make it look a little more realistic. i use it to better effect later on in the level.

i've fixed the part near the second lot of spikes, you can now see where to jump and grab. i republished with 3 people playing it. i hope i didn't kick out 3 potential hearts!

No, you can republish while people are playing. They'll simply continue playing the previous version till they are done.

Anyway, congrats on your first level. Many people never have the will power to complete their levels. So, no matter what, its an accomplishment.

Will queue it up and try later today.

i've encountered a problem. when i play the level on my moon it works just fine, but when i play it on my world material is missing from the last section. i have cut two trees down and taken some materials out and hidden that section with a thin layer in the front, but it still goes missing. is this a regular occurrence? if later on you don't come across this, could you let me know please.

Well, since I haven't played it before, if something is missing, I wouldn't really know.

However, there are a few reasons why this could happen, high thermo, high complexity, you don't have it glued down and its falling, or you have it glued to something that gets destroyed and its getting destroyed with it.

I wouldn't know without looking it. I'll be on around 5pm EST if you want help troubleshooting.

it's certainly not the glue option or the destroy one, but when i pull out a little it does tell me it's too complex and the thermo isn't that far from the top either. i thought you could fill the thermo though

I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but no. Not really.

In fact, complications, strange glitches and technical issues begin around the 3/4 mark. The higher you go above that. The more likely you will find strange, inexplicable things occurring.

Sometimes, nothing will happen, and sometimes, things will disappear in playmode or not work, etc.

First thing you need to do is ensure that you are certain there is no mechanical way it could disappear.

If you are absolutely certain, than it could be a thermo or complexity issue.

I have the same thing going on in my current level. Everytime, I end up having to delete something or choose to emit something later to lower the thermo.

It's hard to explain in writing. Let me know if you want help, if not, no big deal.

I have to second (if not stress) what Cymbol has said. I never knew this when I published my first level. Mine still suffers a bit from high complexity and thermo (the odd lag with 2 players+ sometimes). Sensors and emitters stopped working at one section in my level and I'm still yet to finish tweaking, finding rogue materials left behind etc and republishing. But since it's last update it's been fine. It may be a case of taking down your levels complexity. Rather then building out of a continuos layer of material or huge chunks of sections, I would suggest slicing sections up and joining the seams withthe corner editor. Better still joining them behind thin layers to hide them. Then adding destroyers at the start of your level to destroy stuff that a player has past and cannot back track to. This then frees up thermo. I did this in my own level and don't mind showing you.

aughghghgh!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. that's probably why i've only had three people actually finish it. i'll slice it up and layer it, but it's going to be such a finicky job and i really wanted to get on with a new level... Darn that thermo MM

thanks guys, will edit it when i unclench my fists

i might take you up on that help you offered CYMBOL, i'll just give it a few shots myself first

an unexpected turn indeed... why did i call it that?

Yeah, you may want to take it down til you get things sorted.

Did you have beta testers? Friends, or ask people here to try it and report back?

My biggest recommendation to anyone, beta test your level. The more complex it is, the more you need to do it.

Da for people not finishing, unless its extremely easy, you can count on people not finishing. So, don't look into that too much.

Alright, offer is on the table. Good luck bud.

thanks again Cymbol. i didn't beta test it with anyone but myself 'doh' although a friend of mine just finished it and had no problems...so who knows. i'm going to slice it up and nuke the beginning if necessary with a destroyer once the player is at a point of no return. trouble is, there isn't a point of no return, i designed it that way lol.
