An easier way to get an MM Pick?

Archive: 56 posts

All of you guys know how hard it is to get MM Picked. 3 levels every 3 days out of 4,000,000,000 levels? Insane.. But, if you've noticed, Move levels are getting picked! So maybe if you make a Move level you have a better chance? Or am I just stupid

Discuss.

Yes, MM is looking for Move levels, but that hasn't stopped them from picking regular levels.

As for MM Picks, seems to be feast or famine.

Yes they were after move levels in recent times but I think it's died down now. They got a few to highlight what can be done. I guess move levels have an equal chance to be picked as everything else does now. Of course it's probably easier to do something new with Move stuff and hence get noticed.

Considering how many Halloween levels they picked recently I think it's fair to assume they'll be looking for Christmas levels later in the year. At least if I had to place bets it'd be there for an "easier" Mm pick. The levels still have to be great and stuff.. so yeah. I imagine there would be a fair bit of competition too.

Twitter is a major advantage in getting their attention to play your level also.

The Move Pack just came out, right about now, the first cluster of great community Move levels show up, MM wants to showcase how the pack can be effectively used by the community. All seems fairly standard and predictable, really. So I hope this isn't some sort of jab at MM, here.

TBH, though, I half expected this thread to read;
"Easier way to get an MM Pick?"
'Be on talking terms with the staff?'

I pretty doubt that it's only being in talking term with the stuff.
And not only about twitter.
I doubt that MM picks a level because a creator just twit it, but surely if lots of people rave on twitter about a level, they surely do spark MM curiosity.
I often twit levels to MM/Spaff, but it's only for level that truly amae me, often they were from people I didn't even know.

When the Move pack came out I was wondering if they were going to focus on a few Move based levels. I could see Sony "encouraging" the picking of them to maybe increase their Move sales and Mm too so that more people would want to get the pack.

I noticed something funny.. They changed the comments in LBP.me to have the top 3 highest rated comments right? Well if you were to look at Spaff's top rated comments.. They weren't exactly positive. Also UrbanDevill created an uproar within the community with his new and 4th Mm pick after being gone for months and the top comments weren't in his favor either.

It seems a bit coincidental that recently the comments were changed back to be organised by date by default removing those 3 highest rated comments from the top. Then they go a pick more levels in a small amount of time than they ever had? Hmmmm... lol.

I think it's great though. I haven't played all of them but I saw a few gem's that I am so happy got picked as well as some creators like Riki and Foto who are, in my oppinion, overdue for getting a pick because they are so skilled. They also had the support of well know creators and Mm picks usually do follow a pattern such as that. Although... sometimes it seems like they pick from cool pages XD because most of the time the levels are fairly new.

Anyways to the OP: I'm pretty sure the MM Picking hype was to fish out any good Move levels and say, Look! This is what you can potentially do! or the sort.

I tried getting a twittah to tweet MM but I was too much of an idiot to even know how to tweet... xD

Of course move levels are being picked, it's what amazes Mm with the tools given is the key right?

But I disagree on the notion to base a level that's what is most likely to be picked. I mean, where is the fun in that? Are you in it for creating or for bragging?

Mm picks are pretty much useless for plays unless you're fortunate enough (Mm should add levels in moderation so they have fair play time) to be on top of the list, and man that is one awesome wave to surf .

I kinda frown that up since I consider it egohistic and not close to the community spirit and I won't ever support that.

I'm trying to resist this thread... I have been since it was first posted but... ah heck with it.

Move levels aren't being picked for the fact that they are move levels. They're getting picked for the fact that MM like them. End of.

I didn't go out there with the aim of getting an MM Pick. Sure, I'm thrilled to bits that I have, but I didn't spend two months in create mode thinking - must get a pick, must get a pick, must get a pick.

I thought - Must tell Printz's story, must get that level done, must FINALLY get level 1 published (It's the fourth version - three completed levels were abandoned). I was simply lucky enough that friends went crazy about it on twitter and hounded spaff into playing the level, and double lucky that he apparently enjoyed it. (and following directly from that, unlucky enough to be triple hounded by the anti-move trolls)

So, to answer the OP, no, a move level will not automatically get a pick. Just like, as OEB says, a halloween level or christmas level won't. 'Great' is in the eyes of the beholder, and in this case, the beholder is MM. If they think it's great, they pick it.

Now getting them to play it - that's the trick. I think we need to find out if Spaff has a paypal account that we can bribe him on....

Oh Mr Spaffordshire?????

Yeah, I've gotta say that rialrees level definitely got Mm picked because it's totally awesome, and not just because it's a Move level. Anyone who hasn't played it yet should stop whatever they're doing and go play it right away.2011-11-10 19:21:00

Move tools are new, Mm picks (apart from just bribing Spaff) are about something new. It's not surprising that there a some great Move levels being highlighted. The halloween theme is also a nice touch.

It is a bit cynical to think that by making a Move enabled christmas level you are guaranteed a Mm pick though.

I bought move and haven't really used it since the DLC so lets be friendly about it and say that Mm wants to make sure I get my value for money out of it by keeping me up to date with some great move enabled levels (none of which I have played yet).

Rialrees level is queued, looking forward to some point and click action!

Oh, I don't think anyone is insinuating that any of the Move levels picked didn't deserve it - I think most people are saying that cause a tweet from MM said, "Let us know if you see any good Move levels". Which, I'm sure would be expected.

I for one have been loving seeing so many MM Picks finally being given out. Many to friends, or people I just know as being amazing creators that were loooooong overdue for one.

It's been a great few weeks, I hope they continue highlighting amazing levels.

The direction is clear: Sony has a product to be sold (move controller) => MM makes DLC that uses the product => MM favors levels with new product. Economic calculation.
But that doesn't mean that they picked bad levels. Anyone can make some kind of move level and do the tweeting, there are already a lot of these levels, but not everyone will get the MM pick.
The only problem in favoring this move (and holidays) levels is that some good not move (and not holiday) levels remains unnoticed by the MM.

Personally I would love Mm to play my levels because I like the idea of showing off my work to the people who gave me the tools to do it, but I wouldn't want one of my levels to get Mm picked again because of all the negative attention it brings from the worst elements of the community.

It happened to me when Space Assassins Vol.1 got picked and having a load of cocky little turds writing "u r ***" and "sux balls" all over my comments page didn't sit well with me. Some people can let it wash over them, but I'm kinda like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. It irritates me to the point that I feel an urge to grab my shotgun and shout "get off my lawn!".

So personally I feel Mm picks are a double edged sword. Nice to know that 1000s of people are playing your level, but not so nice when all the abuse starts flooding your way.

I thought that was the desired account to tweet things to, while tweeting things directly to your account was like spamming you when you're trying to do non-MM-pick stuff.

Unfortunately, a popular and well-made level will attract a lot of hate. It's most likely down to jealousy, so I wouldn't take it to heart, Clint

I mean, what have these haters ever accomplished on LBP? You have an MM pick! Stuff the haters! When I look for levels and I see comments like "omg dis lvl sux".... I don't think "Oh, this extremely intelligent sounding person deems this level to be unsatisfactory, therefore I shall not play it"..... my point being that stupid comments like that aren't going to put folk off your level.

I am pleased with the increased frequency of MM picked levels, I even see a couple RPGs up there. I guess this would at least give some hope to those trying to get MM picks out there. I see a new one about every three days or so.

In answer to the question,

I dont think there is an easy way to get MM picked, simply because for new creators, there isnt really an easy way to get noticed. Personally, you probably want to just get more active in the community, and meet more people, and increase your chances of getting noticed. That an make sure you make a really good level. Get opinions on it and make it better before presenting it to MM.

If the recent picks were any indication, your level doesn't have to be on the cool pages to get picked. It just needs to "wow" one of the representatives.

I agree with RPG Maker. Just how active do you have to be. My F4F thread is doing quite well. Or you can spy on me on my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/littlebigdes/) or lbp.me profile and get to know me.

But I'm also known for making very good cookies and Malteaser cupcakes will those help

Overall I'm quite happy to see this new burst of levels being picked especially from those that are not known very well in the community. Gives hope to others that are not known and have hidden gems for a level lost in the community.

UPDATE: As for all the hate I would ignore it, especially if you love the game enough to go on. With love there hate, with ying there's yang. So you can't have one without the other.

Even though Spaff did post here and say he would play our levels, that doesn't mean that he will MM Pick them. He and the others still have to like and be impressed by the level to get it Picked.

But I'm sure one of us here will get Picked (If not already)

I'm just happy enough when a friend tells me they think my level is as almost or is as good as a MM pick. one of my buds even told me once they tweeted one of my levels to MM or something, that was more then cool enough to hear. long as even a small handful of people enjoy my levels then that's good enough for me. of course sense I'm a artist,story-teller and a all around dreamer, i make stuff pretty much just because i want to see my dreams & ideas real and so on. but it's still nice to know people enjoy your work even if your like me and just make levels mainly for yourself. I never once worked on a level thinking i hope this gets MM picked. not that i have any problem if one ever did. it be cool sure. but it's not really important to me. all i like to know my levels are good enough that they are equal to the level of a MM pick level or something like that, and that's good enough for me. *mew2011-11-13 19:44:00

Yeah, but they are kids. Kids are only relevant for their older age potential, not for their current state. You can savely ignore everything a kid says and nothing will make a difference.

Nine circles of hell, everytime I go check LBP.me I see MM has been handing out Picks like candy! Has the flow of brilliant levels increased that much since the Great Summer Drought? Makes me feel bad for not being able to log into the PSN and play them all.
This sucks! In the last two months I've been home there were no MM picks at all, and as soon as I set my ******* feet in another country they start coming from all directions! What the hell! Its just like those all those times I discover people decided to throw a party in my absence.

I'm sad to see the MM Picks surge, go away so quickly.

I've seen a few tweets, recommending levels. Only about 12 in the last few weeks.

Our spotlight team goes through tons of levels every week. I am sure the guys at MM are busy dudes, but I see no reason why, after lunch each day they can't play one recommended level.

I'm just worried we will be waiting til the end of Dec, get tons of X Mas picks, and then silence again through Jan.

This is a community game, and MM is the biggest member of that community, and I think most people would agree, every one is happier when they actively engage with the community they created.

Spaff tweeted about being in the US for Thanksgiving.

Anyway, I don't expect MM to play levels all day. One or two a day. Maybe during lunch. Some of our spotlighters have jobs and family and manage to play through tons of levels every week and leave reviews.

I would just like to see MM be a more constant presence in the community. Not just stop in every few months.

I really do hope to see them more often in the future.

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if Steve's new level got picked. It's a bit short, but has a great presentation.

I can think of a few older ones that I think deserved an MM Pick.

There are a lot out there that deserve at least a considerations, so I hope Spaff and crew take the time and dig deep. There are countless gems out there.

Hmmm, after viewing the latest MMPICKs, (which are great levels) it seems this list is pretty much not going to happen.

Most of the levels played were not from this list, or, in any order from the tweets I've seen.

Ah well, we tried.
