PSA: Ad Revenue and Hosting Fees

Archive: 36 posts

Woo! We successfully raised the $250 we needed. We're good for another three months. If you'd still like to donate (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/donate.php?do=paypal) (we could definitely still use it), the offer will remain open for the next few days. Otherwise, we're good to go! Thanks to everyone who donated!

--------------------

So, I'll cut right to the chase: LBPCentral is having a financial problem. Although we host ads on our site, GamerDNA (the company who serves our ads) is having "internal problems" and thus refuses to pay us (me) until they sort it out (http://i.imgur.com/QunuX.gif). I honestly feel that's absolute hogwash, but what can I do - I'm just a poor college student with no money to fight them. I have threatened switching ad companies if they don't pay soon, but even so, I have not received a payment in over two months (they pay monthly, supposedly). As such, LBPCentral is in a bit of a pickle.

As I mentioned, I'm a college student, so I'm eternally poor. Without those payments, I can't pay our hosting fees, and I can't ensure LBPCentral will stay up.

I hate asking, but at this point, I don't know what else to do. We don't even get any donations anymore - there are one or two active subscriptions, but nothing that really would put a dent in this. We (I) pay quite a bit of money - about $250 every three months or so - for these servers, and I simply do not have the resources to afford the next round without the ad payments.

So, here's my proposal: to anyone who donates (or subscribes - click Donate (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/donate.php?do=paypal) in the navbar for more info) $10 or more, I'm willing to offer double donor status and a free Ultimate Upgrade from the Market (which includes things like a bigger avatar, editable custom title, etc). Not only that, but if you can donate $50 or more, I'm willing to offer lifetime donor status. Yes, I'm serious. From now until we've earned enough to afford the next payment, if you donate $50 or more, you will have donor status for life.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for being a part of this community. One way or another, I'm sure things will turn out for the best.

Holy **** CC!
Why didn't you talk about it earlier?
When is the next payment due?

Things will turn out for the best for sure, but crap, you should have warned us earlier

Because it's not the community's job to think about these kinds of things. That's why I'm here. I'm supposed to handle things like this. But with college added to my plate, my financials have gotten really crazy. So this is literally my last-ditch attempt. I hate doing this, but I don't see any other options.

I noticed donations are made through paypal. I don't have a paypal account ( I know it probably wouldn't be hard to set up) but I was wondering is there another way.
For people who don't or can't set up an account. Can donations be made any other way?

Your embarrassed to ask for our help? We use this site you created for us everyday, and we all love it. You should never be embarrassed or shy to ask for financial help from the people who love the site. Though Im only 16, Ill try to do what I can. I for one would be mortified if this site shut down for a while.2011-11-07 13:56:00

Not that I'd endorse, no. Paypal is fairly universal - I don't know of any major countries that can't use it. And it's safe, for all involved. All I see is who donated and how much - the banking details are protected by Paypal. That's why I use it for almost all of my internet transactions.

EDIT: Plus, as shropshirelass mentioned below, you don't have to register to use it. Just go through the process as a guest, it'll work the same way.

Well, you live in the US right? Could you perhaps provide a PO box or address or something for fellow Americans to send letters to?2011-11-07 14:05:00

Just to clarify, though, you don't need an actual Paypal account to make a donation. You can do it by debit/credit card as a guest. I know this works as I've just done it - I'd forgotten my PayPal password and so clicked on the pay as a guest option instead. 2011-11-07 14:05:00

Thanks.
I was just curious. I know many of our members are younger and may not have a credit card etc., and given another way to donate I'm sure they would.

How much time do we have?
I have to go to the bank, since I use pre-paid credit cards and must refill it...and today is already too late to go

EDIT: I managed to squish 4$ out of the card...everything that was left because I don't know when I can go to the bank

Also, at least for this period I suggest to not disable the banners for the donors, and look out for someone else providing ads.

Don't rush. If you can afford to help, great - if not, don't worry about it. We'll figure it out.

I donated just now. Never used Paypal before, I always figured it would be one of those sites loads of people use, yet it's a pain in the butt that never works properly. Like Megaupload.

Anyhow. Consider it an early Xmas present.

If I wasn't a student as well I'd help, but until I get some more money in (which won't be for 2 weeks or so :/) I can't really afford too... If you still need it then, I'll be more than happy to put a bit to it.2011-11-07 14:59:00

Ugh, this sucks.

Sorry CC, but I too am one of those eternally poor creatures known as a student. I'd love to help, but my finances scream "No!"

Good luck, here's hoping for the best!

EDIT: Wow! That was fast! Things like this solidify my theory that this is, in fact, one of the best online communities ever!

Love you guys! <3

Okay guys, we've raised enough to afford another three months. If you'd still like to donate (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/donate.php?do=paypal) (we could definitely still use it), the offer will remain open for the next few days. Otherwise, thanks to those who donated (feel free to make yourself known - otherwise, we'll protect your privacy), and thanks to everyone for being so willing to help. It's really a testament to the quality of this community that we can solve a problem like this so ridiculously quickly. You guys are awesome! 2011-11-07 15:03:00

Are there no lawyers who frequent LBPC?
We need donations of their time and expertise!

I would seriously suggest carry through with the threat of switching ad companies... if there is a viable reputable alternative choice. It's probably a pain and consumption of your valuable time... but I'd play hardball.

As an aside, I can hardly wait to see what my 'DaddyWarbucks' pin looks like!

Let's just say, as long as LBPCentral exists in some form, we'll find a way to recognize those who have helped keep it around.

Now, please CC put somewhere a termo gauge with the funding situation like many sites do, so that who cares about it, can check how the situation is going and act to prevent it, without hurrying like this time.
Also, check those idiots at the ad service, and start to think if it's the case to change.

I've been thinking about doing that for quite some time now, actually. Problem is, donation tracking products are usually quite expensive. I may have to come up with my own way to track it. I'll play around with some ideas, see if I can come up with anything quality.

Yeah I agree, switch ad companies. Theyre being douchers, and so they need to get what they deserve. They dont pay you, they dont get to advertise. You need to make them (*puts on sunglasses*) PAY.2011-11-07 15:38:00

Man, we don't need the shiny thingie, but you can just update a post manually.
Times are what they are, crap, so spare the money and go with a typed weekly updated post.
Do it the redneck way! j/k

I have two ideas.
1. Ask Media Molecule. It's in their best interest that these forums remain open and active. They make enough money that I'm sure they could donate $1000 a year and it would not hurt them in the slightest.
2. Someone already mentioned this, kind of. Set up a P.O. box and ask people to mail 1(one) dollar. Just a buck. Might work.

Also, don't close the pay pal thingy. 3 months goes by pretty quickly nowadays and it might be a good idea to leave it open for people to donate whenever they can. Shoot! running late, got to go.

It is most certainly not coming to an end, I promise that. We're set for at least another 3 months, and by that time I will have sorted out the issue with GamerDNA. We're fine now - thanks entirely to the generosity of the LBPCentral community.

Man, im away for a couple of days and we hit a financial crisis. My presence is needed

In all honesty though I need to thank all the donators and the generosity of the community.
Im only 14 so finding and giving money can be difficult, but believe me I would help.

Just because we've met the current crisis doesn't mean the donations need to stop.
(hint, hint)
I'm sure there are lots of things CC would like to do but, as we all know, it takes money to accomplish.
