The Explorers

Hello all, Well, I think I'm finally getting near to completing my latest level. Even though I have other badges on my Earth, I really consider this my 2nd level. Jumper was my first, and the others were just fun projects I wanted to do. So, here is my second LBP2 level. I wanted to do a level about Exploring an uncharted planet - it can be played as a simple platformer, or, for more hardcore LPB gamers - they can go Exploring and look for hidden precious Energy Cells. I also wanted to try and make a level that was more naturalistic. I've seen lots of nature levels that are flats floors and lots of straight lines, very LBPish in design, which is nice - but I wanted to try and make something with a more natural feel. Plus, design has always been my weakness - so, I felt it was time to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Here are a few pics. The beginning of the level. http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/46114/2395343870104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2395343870104171976rkvkkR) The Light Falls http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/49970/2947931120104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2947931120104171976YjYBXH) Bug Canyon (Just find a way across - and be QUIET) http://inlinethumb34.webshots.com/47393/2384743750104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2384743750104171976sQUjEN) Don't rush through, take your time and look around. http://inlinethumb43.webshots.com/46570/2478543880104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2478543880104171976oDhiyz) Next weekend - I was hoping to get 4 people (no one from my friend's list) - preferrably people who have never played any of my levels - to get a key and beta test the level and come back with a mini-review, focusing on any issues or bugs. It would be preferrable if you can post pics (in case you want to show me the problem area) - but it's not required. So, please let me know if you are interesting and have the time next weekend. Thanks in advance to anyone who feels they can help. Catch you guys around. | 2011-11-05 19:01:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

I can't send a key cause you are not on my friends list, and my list is full. So, a lockbox will have to do. Thanks for volunteering. I'll be in contact later in the week. | 2011-11-06 00:57:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

Whoo! Nice to see you got everything working bud! Can't wait to play! Message me if you need a beta tester. Of course, I'll ask you to beta test, but not as one of the four. I need people who have never seen the level. I haven't quite fixed everything, but I'm working on it. One way or another, its time for this level to be done. So, Nov 17, its being published unless it completely breaks. Fingers crossed!!!! | 2011-11-06 02:33:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Just need one more person able to play the level next weekend and report back with any significant bugs. Thanks in advance. | 2011-11-06 20:30:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Wow I was wondering when this was going to be up, especially after I had a brief play of it with you. I know I've already seen the level, alas it was only a brief play since I had to go. But if you'd like me to put more time into playing it properly and looking in all the nooks and crannies then let let me know. | 2011-11-06 21:27:00 Author: LittleBigDes Posts: 920 |

I would rather have people that have never seen the level, and people who aren't on my friends list, that way, they wont feel the need to go easy on it. So, still looking for one more person | 2011-11-06 21:39:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

So, still looking for one more person OK no problem, I can see your point. It's only been up for a day or so, so someone else will come along since it's early days. UPDATE: There was an area where I felt it zoomed out a bit too much. It was at the travelling bounce pad section with a energy cell at the top. I was on a 32" flat screen at the time. But thought I was a bit too small at that section. I'm not sure if there was any tracking from the camera? | 2011-11-06 22:00:00 Author: LittleBigDes Posts: 920 |

I'm not sure if there was any tracking from the camera? Yeah, I usually ask people that question since my tv is pretty large. I know the section, thanks, I'll see if it can be adjusted or not. I think not though, its pulled back in the first place to allow players a chance to see the energy cell in the first place. So, I might just be stuck with that view for that small part. Thanks for pointing it out. | 2011-11-06 22:21:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

I'll contact you later in the week with the access code to play the level. | 2011-11-07 16:06:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

Would you like me to contact a few new comers on my list for you to get one more? If you know someone who you think would be interested, that is fine. But no need to go polling everyone. 3 will work too, and I might do another play through with you if our schedules work Thanks. | 2011-11-07 17:20:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
If you still need a tester I can be one! :> | 2011-11-07 19:07:00 Author: StarrKable Posts: 196 |
Alright, thanks a lot. That will take care of my 4 testers. Thanks, more info to follow. Will get with you guys this Thursday or so, hopinf you'll be able to play it around Sat or Sun and then leave your mini review/feedback. The main focus will looking for bugs. Thanks again, talk to you guys soon. | 2011-11-07 19:35:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Ok guys, I have a lockbox set up, right above my profile pic. I'll probably send you the code Sat night or Sun morning. Please give it a play through. Unfortunately, there may still be some tweaks being made, so, you may not be playing the final version. But very close to it. So, when you get the code via PSN, just go to my lockbox level and put it in, hit X, and you should activate the level link and begin The Explorers. Once done, please post back here with any bugs or game breaking issues. Thanks again for helping. And, if anyone wants me to try there work in progress and offer my 2 cents, just let me know and I will gladly return the favor. | 2011-11-09 23:49:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

Beautiful scenery, Id love to make stuff like that. Excited to play it when its released! Oh, haha, well thanks. I'm trying. Some days I look at and think, "It came out pretty good". Other days I think its all one big disaster. I usually think people are going to hate my levels. So thanks for the encouraging words. | 2011-11-10 17:15:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

This looks neat! How did you get the materials to not look flat? Stickers? | 2011-11-11 23:05:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
This looks neat! How did you get the materials to not look flat? Stickers? Do you mean, how do the edges look a bit rounded? If so, it mainly has to do with the material being a "sponge type. In fact, since most of the level is made up of this kind of material, so ever single piece needed a material weaker to make it none grabbable. I probably couldn't count how many tweakers I placed, and how many times checked for places I missed. My main goal was to try and create a nature themed level (well, on another planet) that wasn't the typical LBP style of squares and rectangles for the flooring and structures. I've always struggled with design. This level was actually going to be my first LBP2 level, but half way through, I felt my lack of design ability glaring through, so, I abandoned it. I finally started it up again, got halfway through and was unhappy and scraped the whole thing again. Well, this is the third redesign and, this is it. I'm not doing this a fourth time! Haha. It's been a lot of fun putting the final version together. I hope a few people find themselves taking time to actually slow down and look around instead of simply racing through the level. Guess we will find out soon. Should ne out this Thursday, fingers crossed. | 2011-11-12 01:49:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

Wow, this looks very good. love how you did the art style. i'll keep checking back on this. *mew Thank you very much. Ok, beta testers, I'm working really hard to get the ending in place by tomorrow evening. Either way, I'll contact you all with a code for the lockbox. If I don't feel the ending is good enough, I'll just have a scoreboard before the real ending. Please feel free to take pics of troubled areas, just please don't take pics of any secret areas if you find any energy cells. I'll post a couple more pics on a bit for anyone interested. Thanks again for all the encouraging words everyone. As creators yourself, you know how helpful that can be. I appreciate it. | 2011-11-12 18:55:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Hey Cymbol! I remember you specifically from your Jumper level! Awesome, by the way. The pics you have here look great, you're obviously much more capable with visual design than I am, if I may say so. If you need any more playtesters, send me the goods and I'll give it the ol' inspection (I have 3 days off starting Monday). Alternately, if you are planning on a review thread for this level, I'll be sure to leave feedback there once it's published for the public | 2011-11-12 19:03:00 Author: EvilWuun Posts: 152 |

Jumper is my only real level - so, after messing around for a long time with side projects and helping others - I'm finally going to put out my second level - how's that for procrastrination?! Haha. | 2011-11-13 01:13:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
@ my beta testers - don't think I'll have the ending done for tomorrow - so, I'll just throw a scoreboard to the part you can get to for now. I'll send beta codes tomorrow evening. Thanks again everyone. Ok, here's a few more pics. Firebugs. http://inlinethumb02.webshots.com/49281/2042428270104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2042428270104171976HQosIp) Since this is your first time being an Explorer, a handler has been assigned to help you along. His ship is a unique, oscillating sphere. http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/47085/2798408300104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2798408300104171976aHwXKe) If you look closely, you can spot a baby Bulbsaurus - harmless creatures, with extremely bouncy shells! http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/49154/2074830230104171976S500x500Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2074830230104171976TFuDij) Unfortunately, so much had to be cut from this level. But I guess that means that Explorers 2 kind of saved the best for last. If you sort of like Explorers, but wished it had more action, more unique powerups, and more creatures - then I think you'll be even happier with Explorers 2. Catch you all soon. | 2011-11-13 01:24:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Ok, beta testers, I'll be sending the code this afternoon. Simply go to my lockbox, input the code and hit X and you'll start the level through a level link. Please look for huge issues - things didn't work, you fell out of the level, etc. Other things like, how was the music, the lighting etc. Things you liked or didn't like in general. If you decide to go exploring for energy cells, how many did you find? Thanks again, I'll probably send the code in a couple of hours to your private inbox I'm LBPC. | 2011-11-13 18:47:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

*tuts* Triple Posting, eh CYMBOL? I've either been responding to posts (such as this one), or giving info. As far as I know, I haven't done anything rude. Either way, this thread is about to be done. Ill delete it when I publish my level in a couple of days. So, sorry if I was doing something wrong. | 2011-11-13 19:20:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Okey, Played through it It was visually appealing and the soundtrack was awesome....the handler doesn't make a re-appearence though Okey, Now... there wasn't any glitches except for some being stuck places... At the part just before the firebugs, If you run to the side and jump, you land on a back laer and can't get back unless you commit sackicide. the firebugs were also pretty confusing at first, I thought the ones you passed were also grabbable bbut my fault reall! all creatinators and grappling hooks were droppable. The energy cells add great replabilty. all in all i thoroughly enjoyed it I personnaly didn't like: the Creatinators at first...I thought they were shot too far out to execute some stuff, might just be that I'm used to them coming out a bit closer. I found two cells, the first and fourth | 2011-11-14 18:17:00 Author: Valeview Posts: 1581 |
Great thanks, I'll check out the area you got stuck, I think I know what you mean. Yeah, Comishguy did an amazing job on the music. I couldn't have asked for anything better. You'll see the Handler again, remember, the ending wasn't in place in your version. So, should the Creatonators be undroppable? Thank you very much for the feedback, very helpful. | 2011-11-14 19:18:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Yes... They shouyld be undroppable. Also: if you fix the wrong place...I took a photo, think I've forgotten to upload it though! | 2011-11-14 19:49:00 Author: Valeview Posts: 1581 |
So, I just played it. Seriously, the visuals are beyond anything else on LBP! And the gameplay was just awesome! This will be definately a MM Pick! I didn't get stuck anywhere...though I had a small problem with the creatinator (btw: Make it undroppable, it makes no sense dropping them and it happens that you drop them by accident. ). To be precise I had my problems with the shooting range. The bounce pads appear quite far away. But it's actually nothing to worry about as it doesn't disturb the flow. It's perfect, buddy! (And it makes me feel unworthy! You're the first one who gave me that feeling...so congrats! ) | 2011-11-14 20:21:00 Author: StarrKable Posts: 196 |

I hope you'll stop by this Thursday for the published version and see the proper ending (instead of the scoreboard just randomly slapped down). There will be some changes already, I'll be removing the scorebubbles from most of the level. And fine tuning a few things that most people will probably never notice. I think everyone has commented on the distance the creatonator fires. Not that it was bad, just not the usual. But it was specifically made to fire in the middle of the gaps, so the player can leap to the middle, and then bounce the rest of the distance. Luckily, no one seems too put off by it. Btw, did you find any energy cells? Thanks again for taking the time to play my level and come back and leave feedback. | 2011-11-14 23:53:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

oh boy oh boy! I can't wait for you to publish this. Looks great! Thanks a lot, I really hope you find something about it to enjoy. If you don't go Exploring, its a pretty straight forward, basic platformer and actually pretty short. I'm publishing this Thursday. Look forward to hearing your feedback. Thanks again. | 2011-11-15 02:55:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

Thanks for the encouraging sentiments guys. @ the beta testers, tried to contact a couple of you on PSN about a rock you said you fell behind, but I can't seem to find anything, could one of you contact me about, thanks a lot! Also, if any of the beta testers are bored - the full version is now online, those of you with the code can see the ending now, or just wait till the Thursday when its published. If any of you want me to return the favor and beta test one of your levels, just let me know. | 2011-11-16 00:53:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Queued and this time when I write it, it will not be censored, lol. Wish I woulda met u sooner I love beta testing with the creators. I get to dive in their minds and I love working in a friendly environment and with people who can accept constructive critism. If u wanna do a walkthrough together tonight I WILL find time. | 2011-11-16 17:42:00 Author: L-I-M-I Posts: 611 |

Thanks, but it appears the level is glitching. So bummed out. It was perfect the other day, I've only made the slightest changes, now, spawn portals are randomly changing. Not even sure how to fix that. May not be published tomorrow. | 2011-11-16 19:07:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Just to let you know it may not be a good idea to publish Thursday as PSN is due to be down for maintenance. | 2011-11-16 19:40:00 Author: LittleBigDes Posts: 920 |

"PSN Maintenance scheduled for Thursday 17th November until Friday 18th November 16.00PM- 06.00AM GMT" According to their site. Since the first hour or so is crucial to your level being picked up by the community I would hold off. Bare in mind the time differences in time zones across the world too. | 2011-11-16 23:04:00 Author: LittleBigDes Posts: 920 |
Oh, and someone that beta tested, left a comment, saying the level was awesome. Can you believe someone booed it? The level isn't even unlocked yet and people are already booing positive comments. Sheesh! | 2011-11-16 23:09:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Oh, and someone that beta tested, left a comment, saying the level was awesome. Can you believe someone booed it? The level isn't even unlocked yet and people are already booing positive comments. Sheesh! Seriously!? It should be made that people cannot rate comments or reviews unless they've actually played it or the level is actually published to the public. If you haven't played the level or even been a beta tester with a key how can you even know if you like the level or not. | 2011-11-16 23:51:00 Author: LittleBigDes Posts: 920 |
I'd really like for there to be a "Whiny Little Brat" pin thats shows up on a profile for booing 50 comments. Level looks great, looking forward to it. | 2011-11-17 00:57:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |

If you haven't played the level or even been a beta tester with a key how can you even know if you like the level or not. Yeah, any time I've been lucky enough to get on Cool Pages, I've had spam booers who boo every positive comment, doesn't really bother me. Some people really let trolls get to them. I really have no problem at all ignoring them. I just had to mention this one cause it was so ridiculous. Oh well. Haha. | 2011-11-17 01:02:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |

And thanks! I guess Thursday is a PSN maintenance day, so I suppose I'll release it Friday. Hope you find something about it to enjoy. | 2011-11-17 01:12:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Well, good news, bad news. Good news: I plan to publish The Explorers tomorrow around noon tomorrow, Friday, 18 Nov. It's had to cut out tons of what I had initially planned, but the thermo kept forcing me to cut back. So, I hope you guys will still enjoy what made it in. Bad news: I had knee surgery last week (which, even though I was in serious pain, allowed more time for LBP, and actually helped take my mind off my misery). Unfortunately, some serious complications have occurred, and they'll call me tomorrow morning with whether they want to do another surgery tomorrow night. So, I still plan to publish, but there is a good chance I won't be around the first couple of days. Hopefully, the level doesn't glitch, cause I won't be around to fix it. I do plan on checking LBP.me from my phone in the hospital the next day, and hope that more than just the ten people from this thread have checked it out. So, if you get a chance to play it, leave a review, good or bad - it will give me something to read in the hospital. Take care everyone, catch you around. | 2011-11-17 23:25:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
