What's In a Name?

Archive: 26 posts

I was just thinking. My name (PSN, not LBPC) doesn't exactly radiate Good levels. I was thinking of possible creating a new PSN. So I ask you all to answer these questions.
1) Should I?
2) If I did, would it be possible to import my levels in progress?
and Finally) If I did decide to do this, it was possible to copy my levels in progress over...what would be a good name?

I did this myself actually. It takes no more than 10 minutes. (As you can see my LBPC account is Wolffy123 (old account) and where it says PSN: SonofaSack96 is my new account). What you do is create a new account on your PS3, (NOT PSN ACCOUNT, the one you choose right when you turn on your PS3). Then create a new PSN account on that PS3 account. What you can do is copy your whole enitre old profile and make it as your new one. This means all your levels on your moon, your earth, your costumes - EVERYTHING, is on your new account. Only thing that is different is your PSN. How you do that is go on your old account. Go into your "Saved Game Data Utility" (Under the "Games" category), press triangle over your old profile, choose copy, (I may be wrong, mind you), and then go to your new account and paste it in the "Save Game Data Utility". If I'm wrong then just PM me because I'm doing this off of memory. Also, when you enter your pod when you first start the game it tells you that you can't recieve pins or achievements if you don't delete your old profile from your old account. It's up to you whether or not you want to do that. All it does is bug you about it but it doesn't really make a difference. I hope this helped. See ya!

EDIT: You lose all your hearts and pins. You also keep everything in your old goodies bag but its in community objects, not my objects.

I don't think its necessary. As long as you have a name in front of the numbers, I think its fine.

I never really thought about what amount a name plays in people trying your level.

My name is CYMBOL, not exactly a name that wows people, but I still get enough plays.

I have a friend with lots of numbers after his name. He recently got an MM Pick, obviously, the numbers haven't caused him any problems. I think your current name is fine. But its up to you. Sometimes, people just want to start everything over, and that's fine too.

Hmmm, as for a name... CompherMCC? Haha. .

No ideas on that.

Hey CYMBOL.. uhmm, just to let you know, your name is kind of cool. I mean like really, really neat. In fact your name is what got me to try one of your levels 2011-11-03 02:26:00

I'm always thinking that Mr_Fusion implies that I am serious and think I'm better than other players. Where as it is just a nerdy reference.

I hate to say that I may not play a level based on someone's name... It's very rare but a name like xXxHrDQu0rH4xX is a suggestion that I should move on.

But it is really easy to move stuff over to another ID if you have a USB key

Nah. A name is nothing until you give it meaning. It doesn't matter what your name is.

Look at my name. When people first see it, it's meaningless. It's a name. It's not until they get to know me that the name associates with who i am or what I do. Then they make their own associations.

It's the same here. You could name yourself Sackboy_awesome_levels, and no one would care unless you actually made a few awesome levels.

Your name is not what gets you noticed. Your reputation gets your name noticed.

btw Mr-Fusion, i always pictured you as a nutty, doc brown, sort of character.

This is a fascinating subject.

One of the older formulae for a famous-sounding name is a dactylic firstname followed by a spondee or monosyllabic surname. If _ represents a long syllable and - a short one then the name would appear: _ - - / _ _ or _.

For the enterprising individual there's a whole field of corporate linguistics. I'm sure you've noticed company and product names often have no meaning or are from a dead language, yet have a nice ring to them.

I actually think there is nothing wrong with Valeview, it has nice alliteration....

I don't think that many people think too much about numbers, but if you hate them, valeviews, valeviewing, valeviewer. Or use veil instead?

I don't think changing your name is necessarily Valeview.
I have already recognized you from your posts here and there is no difficulty when searching a name such as yours because it has numbers or weirdness. It does have good alliteration and I think wanting to change it to something else that is more "fitting" is an OCD tendency. It happened to me but I just stuck with it. Plus there are a multitude of weird problems that can happen between copied data..

I don't think there's anything wrong with your username. I wish I had the ability to change mine - it's not very unique - just my name then my number. I could get a new PSN with a new awesome witty username.... but I'd lose about 2000 trophies

Your username is unique. I'd be more inclined to change it if it was something immature - that doesn't exactly give the best first impression.

I wouldn't say name's important, especially regarding levels. Personally I look at the level name and description rather than the publisher when choosing new levels to play. That doesn't mean to say I ignore it and have any preconceptions when reading the name before the level starts.

As long as it doesn't involve a 'border', as in a symmetrical start and end like: xXx_LETTERS_xXx you should be fine. When I see a name with a border I assume the person's an idiot, or has a mental age of a 5 year old at best.

Yeah, like that guy who tried to join me who had H4H in his username. He was soooooo anoying. I accepted him only to tell him to stop annoying me with requests, and first of all why are you trying to join someone you don't know at all ? You just typed random letters and though, hey, this guy's name's pivottt, let's annoy him ? WTH!

Then I expelled him and tried all of his levels and rated them. Not BOO'd them because he was annoying. BOO'd them because they were all H4H empty levels. Wow. I mean, this guy made his username with H4H in it. Why???!?!!?!?!?

I'm pivottt, because... I used to like Pivot Stickfigure Animator. Not that I regret chosing this username. In fact, when I though "what username should I take" I remembered "oh, I used to do these animations on this program and I thought it sounded great". Then I thought "yuk, not a number at the end... hummmm, yeah, 3 t's"

Why 3 T's ? Remember those games where your data has a 3-letter name ? And since my name is jacque, I allready had one game called Jac, one Jak, one Jck, one JJJ, so I just pressed a random key and it was T. So since then, everytime I found a game with 3 letters to type, I wrote TTT. So the fact that pivottt ends with 3t's isnt totally random. I chose it because I randomly selected it years ago. So I don't feel it doesn't fit.

Whathever, I'm weird. Oh, and sorry for my spelling, I speak french and I'm too tired to read what I write...

Yeah, it makes you seem serious a bit, but your name never gave me any kind of impression of being egotistical.

Oh, haha, well, thanks for giving on of my levels a try then. I appreciate it.

Yeah, Cymbol is the main character in a book I'm writing (a bit if a fairy tale), and the name heavily implies and ties to the word symbol. So, when trying to think of a user name, I tried a few that didn't work, then after thinking for a bit, "Hmmm, I need a name that means something to me, some kind of symbol... Oh!" Haha.

So CYMBOL it is.

@Valeview, I like your name, I say keep it. .

Lol, the funny thing is I hate when people call me 'sir' in real life.

Cymbol; your name is good and so is Pivottt's. Both names have spilling mistooks but are still memorable, I don't think your actual names make me want to play your levels but I quickly notice your name popping up around the place pretty quickly.

This thread has spiralled away from being help and a reason behind names, and the perception they give off. Which is also quite interesting.

....not Batman? or xXX_B4tMaN_XXx?

xXx__xXx

To Ali_Star :
Seriously, I don't know that TV show but it reminded me the soup nazzi (nothing racist, it's the name of a show based on a restaurant).

He means his PSN ID, not his LBPC ID. You can't change that.

I don't know if you'd find it interesting but the main antagonist in an anime called Gasaraki is called Symbol.

It's interesting the psychological implications that a name carries; I remember joining the Minecraft server I moderate and having the server Admin following me invisible for my first few hours of playing. He assumed that "Evil One" carried the title of a griefer (understandably) and kept a close eye on me.

In the end, I explained, as I have many times, that my name comes from a time in real life when there were two people (me being one of them) with the same name living under the same roof. A few of our friends decided they needed something different to call one of us, and started calling me Evil One in reference to some of the more...twisted conversations I've brought into the house. Not to say that I'm actually a twisted person, rather that the other fellow is a polite, rather unassuming guy and in contrast I have a...slightly sick sense of humor.

As far as changing YOUR name, Valeview, I wouldn't bother. I actually kind of like it, and was surprised when you complained about it. It conjures images of foggy fields and plains leading to decrepit castles for me. Honestly, giving the content of the game, it's rather appropriate; I wonder what mystic vale you'll reveal to us?

Yeah, I like the name Valeview too.

Mine is just because everything else I put in was taken. It's Hebrew and Arabic for a few different things depending which transliteration method you use. I don't like it.

I honestly started re-thinking my name after I had heard about the origins of "Lockstich"'s name...2011-11-06 18:30:00

I don't actually have the first clue as to the origin of Lockstitch's name, but I can say with a certain amount of confidence that, were his name anything else, his levels would have been just as successful.

I would say that when I find a level using the in-game database (not LBPCentral), I won't even notice a creator's name until mid-way through the level. It usually happens something like "I recognize this style....who made this? Ohh....." or in the case of a new creator I don't recognize, my next move is to finish the level and blast through everything else that person has published. A good name is one that's easy to remember I think, and yours certainly is.

I find it hard to remember names that are unpronounceable, or contain a long string of numbers. Yours is pretty short and tidy, I wouldn't have trouble remembering it. My name comes from my real life nickname, Pooka. To most people though, it's just a silly sounding word.2011-11-07 23:26:00
