|New Spheres| Act I -3: Madhouse gone Mad!

Archive: 12 posts

Could it be? Oh yes! The third part of the New Spheres - Series is finally out now!

A little bit about the level (I recommend that you play the previous levels first):

As Sackboy enters Eve's Asylum...

...he sees that the inmates are roaming free destroying everything and terrorizing the nurses!
When he gets deeper in search of Eve he meets a few of the inmates and helps the nurses to recapture them again.

But the escaped inmates aren't the only problem:
One of the 'New Villains' (whose silhouettes were visible in the introduction) shows himself as he seems to have a problem with our hero as he uses scary voodoo magic to leave a shocking mark! (That's what you get for disturbing a supper.)

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5342/einfoto.jpg

But that's not all:
The mystery of the escape of the inmates is revealed and the main villain of the series is introduced for the first time!

You don't wanna miss it!

(Well, that's what you call promotion, huh? )
Anyway, this time the level isn't as long and also isn't as difficult as the previous one.
And just a hint: Don't become desperate on the boss fight. Dying is the best way to learn the pattern.

Reviews/Feedback/Suggestions are like always welcome!
They're making the stairway to perfection!

Well, here's a review, at the request of the Creator

The series New Spheres has obviously been an ongoing project, and you've certainly invested a good deal of time creating a very decent extension of the regular game. I just finished playing what you've published so far, and I gotta say that was a good time. A bit loooong, a bit hard at times (particularly parts of Act 1-2), but otherwise a fun plotline to follow backed up with decent gameplay.

Act 1-3 of New Spheres deals with a small section of run-and jump at first with a boss-fight, and quickly becomes a series of plot cutscenes with running in between, more or less. This is not a bad thing from the point of view of someone in the process of playing the entire series, since the story is intriguing enough, but it will turn players away that are interested more in straightforward gameplay. Not saying it's a bad thing, I would just expect a bit less fanfare on this entry than the last, since only a core group will really be able to appreciate it.

The gameplay, while brief overall, was well put together and executed. The boss fight was a bit hectic, and at times I felt a little cornered by the blue things (I guess that IS the purpose of a boss, though), but it worked smoothly, and I wasn't at all confused as to what I had to do. I didn't notice any glitches or bugs anywhere, so you must have wired something up correctly

The scenery of the level started out a little bit bland, and looked as though you may have been pressed for time while decorating it (the very start of the Asylum, before the elevator). It's not bad, really, it just didn't catch my eye and make me go "ooh". The second half of the asylum, the interior garden-thingy, was a bit of a treat, and quite a bit more pleasing to the eye. The contrast between the two sections worked out well, and it felt like an appropriate shift in gameplay to go along with the cutscenes.

The movie bits themselves were well done, though it did strike me at times that you may have been able to get away without using a movie camera for some of the actors dialog. The story holds up well, but at times when meeting the other inmates it dragged on a bit (sorry, Corey the Coward, I just...didn't feel for you) ;p

In the end, I found this level to be an all-around solid addition to the New Spheres series, if a bit lacking for the masses in gameplay. It looks good, plays good, and furthers an interesting story with one of the original Curators as a spotlight character. If you don't mind a plot-line, the New Sphere series is a good one to keep your eye on. Yayed and Hearted, I'll be back for more

I was able to play this last night as well. I liked the intro that is done during the elevator ride up in the beginning. The character introductions, for me coming into this series mid-stream, was good to know as I'd be interacting with all of them in the course of the level.

I noticed that once the elevator reaches the top there is a part of the level to the left that slopes up so I immediately tried to run up that way to see if anything was hidden up there. If you move to the back layer on this slope and slide down you will get stuck in between the slope and the elevator. I couldn't get out as the sackthing was in a constant falling animation. I tried to suicide but that took me back to the beginning of the level and the elevator was a one shot deal so I had to restart the level.

A little corner editing on this slow to eliminate that narrow gap could easily clear up this issue. I liked the lighter, greener sections of the level. They had small bits of platforming gameplay and was a good match to the story levels of the same theme. I liked looking through the level for the hidden point caches though they seem to be in mostly the first half of the level than the last parts.

The boss fight in the middle was interesting but pretty frenetic. There was lot of hazards spawning, moving and flying around so that it took a bit of time to figure out what to do or how to survive. Also the speed at which the attacks changed and came was pretty high in parts so that when I came out of the checkpoint I might die a few a time or two before I could even hit the ground to start moving.

Overall though the boss fight was interesting and offered a good challenge.

I have a question about the bouncepad that is at the Angry Andy section, is this an activated bouncepad or a regular one? I jumped onto it but didn't get any bounce action going on and then immediately got hit by Angy Andy. There isn't much time to experiment once you can move and the lighting/color filter made it hard to know if it was a blue bounce pad or regular bounce pad.

Though this isn't a problem I found that at the last tree where you meet Eve you can jump down and land in the tree's branches underneath. Also the end scoreboard/truck can be run past and you can run right for a while but there isn't anything to see except a wall after a while.

The level is interesting and I liked the use of the materials, music, Eve character and set design to give it the feeling of the Eve's Asylum section of the main story levels. The level is more interactive than being a straight platform level. It is good for people who are interested in the characters and storyline rather than those just wanting to run/jump and get score bubbles.

Good work.

A bug! :@ (Sorta...)
I'm gonna fix that one. :>

Hmm, yeah, I know what you mean. :/
I guess I have to slow down the attacks and the sequencers for the attacks to make it less frenetic.

Thanks! :>
Wasn't easy to make that boss fight so I'm glad you liked it!

It's a bounce pad which gets activated when you press the X-Button. Hmm, I guess I should have mentioned it...

Also the end scoreboard/truck can be run past and you can run right for a while but there isn't anything to see except a wall after a while.

Hmm, perhaps some bubbles to make it worth the 'journey'?

Well, yeah. It's kind of a story level as Act I - 2 was a plattformer (and not an easy one ) and I wanted to get forward with my story.

I've got new badges for my level! They're way more simple but I also think that you can actually see this time what's on it!

What do you think about them? :>

(Lazy me, just copying and pasting my post from the other thread. )
