Frightasia: Walt's Dungeon

Now that the contest is closed, this is no longer and F4F thread. Thanks to everyone for your good advice! This level has undergone some changes, mainly in the first half, but the whole thing has been fine tuned.

This a good level, but it did take me a while to get through. I spent a long time stuck in the water section, but I have ways had trouble navigating water, for some reason I never knew how to switch layers(?).

The rolling jelly plasma bit was tricky to time. I got through my first time without hassle, but then got stuck there for a few minutes the next play through. The mushroom people that grab you are really cool but you have no way of knowing what they are or do until you jump onto the platform. You do get some time to try and shake them off though, so it's a nasty surprise I guess you don't have to go far to get back to them, but if they dragged you off and you just landed back below them it'd be better than dying... It's the same result really, but the potential feeling of a cheap death is negated.

Great visuals in the next part and a clever way to depict violence, it feels pretty Disney somehow. I loved the elephant section and the powerup was a nice touch. Bothe these sections were pretty easy and straight toward. The part with the lightning was most frustrating as I was unsure in the direction I had to head in. You do a good job of highlighting the grapple points but the deadly orb is hard to see so I died without seeing it the first time. The second time I died but saw it, the third time I got run over by the enemy in the bush, then I spent several lives trying to swing over the bush before realizing it was the wrong way. I then found it quite difficult to get past the orb. This is potentially the most difficult area, as it is towards the end but a few of those deaths didn't feel like my fault.

The final battle was fun and not too tricky. Over all I really liked the level but it did take me a while to finish maybe 20mins including deaths. It has great design and some awesome sticker work, well worth playing especially to see the elephant section!

From the moment when good old uncle Walt greeted me at the door dressed in his bathrobe and some weird devil horns.... I knew this was the sort of level for me. An original take on the contest theme, a dark translation of the disney cutsey disney vibe into something slightly more sinister and satisfying. The use of the Fanatsia subject matter gave plenty of room for creative expression and all the sub-sections really shine and leave no doubt what the original film being referenced is. I did consider entering this contest but would have jumped over the line of what was an acceptable dark version of a disney tale with both feet rather than hitting the target perfectly as this does.
The rolling plasma bit is fine when approached with timing and a one jump at a time approach. The racial stereo type mushrooms made me lol, fuuny stuff.
The highlight was the cartoon bubbles gameplay mechanism, done perfectly. A great ending to a well made perfect interpretation of the theme. Hearted!

@ Mr_Fusion, thanks. Originally, the mushrooms didn't kill you, and I'm inclined to put it back that way - I don't want cheap death. I did change the forest area after you played and messaged me about the orb. The orbs where actually zombie cherubs which I electrified, but that made it impossible to see them, and as you said, a little too hard. Now the cherubs just follow you, and if you stand in one spot they start slapping you. Again, this was the original idea, which I changed because I was afraid my level would be too easy. I agree that I went too far making it hard there. Also, if you die three times, the electrified centaur stops coming out of the bush. 20 min is too long, but hopefully making the forest easier will shorten the gameplay.
Thanks again, I'll leave you feedback probably tomorrow, for Miserable Flying Weather? I already have for Temporal Experiment.

@EnochRoot, Thanks! Fantasia is is a bit racist, and I wanted to make fun of that (and how dated it is), hopefully without being offensive. Were you able to get through within 15 min, or is it too long? I'll get to your feedback in the next 1-2 days, your level looks nice.2011-11-03 20:37:00

@pookachoo; slapping cherubs sound great and link back to the mushroom guys. If you're worried about other hard parts, the ninja stars could fall slower...

If you haven't played Miserable Flying Weather yet and you have time take a look. I'd be quite interested in your thoughts, especially after you have seen elements of the next part. Maybe you have ideas about the structure of gameplay/cuts scene/explore.

@Mr_Fusion Yeah, the ninja stars are cutting it a little close. I did play Miserable Flying Weather, might have left a review, but I didn't go to your feedback thread. I'll give it another play...2011-11-04 03:06:00

Soo, here comes some feedback-action! :3

You know, the introduction of your level with Walt was very good! Liked it very much!
(Though I suggest that you make the trap door actually disappear instead of moving away.)

The level was very nice as well! I especially liked the part with the bubbles! Very unique and I've never seen something like that before! Niice!
About the scenery...it was all in all quite good. But in some parts it looked a bit plain. I think you should do something with the 'jelly-part', I don't know, it didn't look so good for me.

The part with Mickey and the wizzard was very nicely done!
I would use more light effects at the final fight though as everything looked quite dark and some light effects would look definately quite awesome!

All in all a very good level! I like!

(For F4F...choose one, though it would be nice if you play my newest one. :3)

Nice job on your LBPC5 contest entry level. It has a nice mixture of Halloween and Fantasia.

VISUALS:
The paint artwork is well-done, especially Walt at the beginning. The level also has neat lighting, but maybe you need to add some additional lighting to this level including the right side of the dancing mushrooms and the boss' arena.

SOUND:
The custom music at the beginning is a nice introduction to this level. It also has great interactive music usage.

GAMEPLAY:
The platforming gameplay is fun and challenging. There's some good ideas in this level such as the bubbles where players must clear them out with the creatinator. In the flower shooting the poisonous gas part, maybe you should adjust the off mode's colors better so that players can be aware of the hazards.

OVERALL:
This level has good visuals and gameplay. Good luck on the contest. A yay.

Nice level you have here i quite liked the part with the mushrooms though they where a little irritating because they kept pushing me off the edge into the death fog but still i thought the models were very well done same with the elephants.

One of the parts i most like though where the bubbles i thought it was very clever the way you use them and can pop them with the hat that shoots arrows.

The part with mickey was fun as well and i liked the simplicity of the boss fight.

Overall a fun level. No need for F4F with any of my levels.
