Mechanical Iris Tutorial

Tutorial Level: http://lbp.me/v/7-mx19 Have you ever wanted a mechanical iris for a futuristic or steampunk creation, or just to gaze at for hours on end in search for the meaning of life? Look no further. In order to build an iris like the one you see opening below, you need a very special iris blade. http://i44.tinypic.com/vhxqiv.jpg This shape took far too long to create, but it is yours free. Just finish the tutorial level (see link below) and you will be given the special shape in addition to a magical iris portal / door that opens and closes in two different ways with just the push of X and O. http://i44.tinypic.com/20tmbkk.jpg Tutorial Level: http://lbp.me/v/7-mx19 Steps to creating your iris. 1. Obtain the iris blade. 2. Turn snap grid on to 5 degrees. 3. Tweak motor bolt on far left point of the blade. It is very small so you may want to increase the blade size before tweaking. This step basically determines how and how fast your iris will open. 4. Click the square of cardboard, copy it along with the blade, rotate 5 degree, paste it (repeat this step 71 more times) 5. Create a very large thin piece of backing material (larger than your iris), hologram, dark matter, anything will work... 6. Move the back material directly behind this iris. 7. Bolt all of your blades to backing material. No need to do them individually, just select the entire iris & backing material, press down on left stick to copy, and finally don't place - just exit the popit. You should hear the bolting noise. Everything should now be bolted. 8. Unpause and enjoy. If your iris doesn't move, check your motor bolts and try using the advanced unglue tool on the blades. It is possible they became fused during creation. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope you enjoy playing with irises. *You can easily create irises with less blades. Just fuse multiple blades together and rotate accordingly. Creating them with more blades is not likely possible give our 5 degree snap to angle limitation. All irises work best with hologram or sticker material but you can make solid versions that work decently after a great deal of tweaking. *Reversing the direction of your motor bolts will cause the iris to open like a camera aperture. This is hard to explain but just play the level and grab the portal door. Opening with the X button will look quite different than opening with the O button. | 2011-10-27 02:11:00 Author: Unknown User |
This is not something people actually need help for. I mean, it's a very specific case. I would put it in Object Showcase instead. Nice though, it looks great ! | 2011-10-28 02:52:00 Author: Unknown User |
I respect your opinion and don't mind if the post is moved but honestly there are lots of highly specific tutorials. Furthermore, there is even a post on the 1st page right now title "How to make an opening/closing door." This tutorial not only allows you to make an iris. It also lets you make a portal door unlike any other I have ever seen in lbp | 2011-11-04 01:04:00 Author: Unknown User |
Got to take a look on this. I recently spent about half a hour making a 4-leaf iris door (no pictures for now, sorry; it is currently residing in the fringes of a WIP level). It works, but feels a bit cheap on the mechanical side (doesn't close cleanly if not held shut, needs lots of force and clatters quite loudly when actuated). This looks much more interesting to me | 2011-11-04 12:02:00 Author: OrwellianStuff Posts: 90 |
I've tried making them in the traditional manner where an external casing is twisted and the iris opens. Unfortunately the transfer of forces required is just too much for lbp to apply correctly. That's why I just used a motor bolt on each blade. If you want a solid iris, things get a bit harder... er much harder. 72 blade solid versions are inherently glitchy. Try fusing the blade material I provide in the tutorial to make an iris with 18 or less blades Another tip is to make sure the motor bolt is on the super far outside of the blade material. I tried very hard using a massive blade to get it as close the the point as possible, but you may be able to get it even closer. The reason why that's so important is because as the iris opens, any material behind the bolt will rub / bind with other blades. Don't forget to 0% friction material tweakers. Even though glass is still slicker with a tweaker than other material with a tweaker, it is quite heavy. Try using cardboard or wood and avoid using indestructible. It makes things a bit bouncy. Oh, and also you will need to use some logic to keep it from "opening too far" If you want help just add me and swing by some day. | 2011-11-07 03:01:00 Author: Unknown User |
