Yeah, it shows guts to release a trailer in the midst of the Arkham City, BF3, Uncharted3, Skyrim, MW3, AC:Revelations and SR The Third month...
If Rockstar hasn't got something totally mindblowing...they'll gather an impressive amount of thrown poo.

Hmmm, been studying that V symbol in hopes of a clue as to the location chosen for this 5th installment of the game. We won't have to wait long to find out anyway 2011-10-25 12:34:00

It will be America again...
My thought is that Beijing, Hong Kong or Mexico City would have been the best picks.

Yeah I would love to see a non-American setting, wishful thinking lol. Considering that since GTA 4 R* released RDR and L.A. Noire - two of the best games this gen imo - expectations are sky high and they know it. Releasing a trailer during a time so saturated with AAA titles means R* has balls and I trust they are going to deliver. Keep in mind Max Payne 3 comes out next year so I guess it's safe to assume Spring 2013 for GTA V.2011-10-25 12:45:00

I think the only other location it could be, is the UK. Like I suggested in my post, if you have it somewhere else, you miss out on the cultural references, radio, and the music. For example, if you were to set it in Tokyo for example, it wouldn't make much sense to hear a lot of western songs on the radio, whilst the broadcasters all spoke English. Plus, you'd miss out on all the awesome cameos.

Most companies would go for the obvious 11/11/11 release date.

Rockstar on the other hand... 11/02/2011 = 11022011 Very classy Rockstar...very classy.

Thanks to Nowgamer.com (http://www.nowgamer.com/features/997273/gta_v_announced_rumours_roundup.html), here's a rumour round-up

GTA 5 Is Officially Unveiled
25 October 2011 - Rockstar reveal the logo for the game, confirming that GTA 5 is in development. The logo was accompanied with confirmation that a trailer will be released a week later on the 2 November.

It?ll Feature MotionScan Technology
21 July 2011 ? The costly ? but impressive ? technology seen in L.A. Noire has been rumoured to be making its way to GTA 5 for some time now. Brendan McNamara of Team Bondi stated in an interview that he believes Rockstar is considering it.

However, when quizzed about whether this meant GTA 5 would likely see MotionScan being utilised, McNamara put some doubt on the feasibility of using MotionScan, ?Grand Theft Auto is incredibly huge, so you?ve got all the problems of how big the cast would be and how many lines you would have to record.?

24 May 2011 ? Rockstar then revealed at the release of L.A. Noire that the tech was far too expensive, and therefore unlikely to find a use for it again. In fact, two job postings at Rockstar North in May seemed to suggest more traditional facial animation methods might be considered for whatever project the team are working on.

Considering the size of GTA games and its myriad characters, MotionScan would likely prove too costly to implement into GTA 5. For now, it seems unlikely that MotionScan will be implemented into the next Grand Theft Auto.

GTA V Will Be A Wii U Launch Title
21 July 2011 ? Prior to E3 2011, when the general buzz for Nintendo?s next console was at its peak, a rumour that Rockstar would be revealing its next GTA game was commonplace, some even suggesting that the game would be a launch title for Nintendo?s Wii U.

The event came and went without any mention of GTA 5, however the rumour remained. During an interview with Take Two?s Strauss Zelnick, Rockstar?s possibility of developing for the Wii U was discussed, to which he replied, ?They [Rockstar] support the platform and they were pretty excited about what they have seen.? Zelnick continued, saying possible Rockstar development ?will be driven by economic opportunity and creative opportunity.?

In other words, if the Wii U proves to be a financial success for Nintendo, then Rockstar will ? of course ? develop for the platform. As such, it seems unlikely that GTA 5 will make it to the Wii U at all, since its more likely that the game has been in development for Xbox 360 and PS3 for many years already.

GTA 5 Will Release In 2012
1 July 2011 ? Rumours began to fly prior to E3 2011 this year that seemed to suggest the next GTA was ready for an announcement. Considering the previous information leaks surrounding the potential characters for GTA 5 and suggestions that it may currently be in testing stage, it is inevitable that Rockstar?s next blockbuster is likely to blow cover soon.

While E3 didn?t see a GTA reveal this is still a sentiment analysts seem to agree with, as Rockstar?s continuation of its contract with Take Two seems to confirm. In fact, Take Two?s comment on the deal adds even more weight to a 2012 release date, in which it stated Rockstar has ?a very strong pipeline of titles in development.?

In response to the contract extension, analyst Jesse Divnich at EEDAR told NowGamer ?Personally I?d go for November 2012. The market has been so over-saturated with FPS that there is and will be considerable demand for sandbox action-based titles for the next 3 years.?

While there?s no hard evidence to suggest that GTA 5 will be released in 2012, GTA 4 was released in 2008, making a respectable four-year gap between releases. That?s a plausible time frame for development, especially considering Rockstar already has its RAGE engine ready to go. We?re expecting 2012, then, and wouldn?t be surprised if Divnich?s suggestion of November turned out to be spot on.

Existing Characters To Return In GTA 5
29 March 2011 ? It's something of a staple in GTA games, as cameos and recurring characters make their way into each entry. GTA 5 will no doubt be the same, but we?ve already seen hints to suggest a couple of characters that may feature.

Patrick ?Packie? McCrery, close cohort to GTA 4?s Nico Bellic, was last seen at the end of Ballad Of *** Tony ? widely considered the end of the GTA 4 tale ? during the credits, as he steps out of a taxi and enters Francis International Airport. Will we see Packie in the next GTA 5, regardless of setting?

Second is the character James Pedeaston, a radio host who was arrested in Sri Lanka for child molestation. A leaked roll call, which is expected to be future characters for GTA 5, highlighted the potential return for this character. The description, intended to inform possible voice actors of the characters, read ?a man-boy love activist who just got released from an Indonesian prison.?

As mentioned, it's highly likely that GTA 5 will feature a handful of cameos and returning roles, so expect to see these two in the next Grand Theft Auto.

There Will Be More Than One Playable Character
GTA 4 and its DLC saw something of a shift in story-telling mechanics, which had players take the role of three different playable characters ? each of who are connected together, briefly, as part of the Museum Piece mission in GTA 4. There?s a chance that this unique feature will actually be a focus of GTA 5, with multiple playable characters throughout the main campaign without the addition of DLC.

To add weight to this rumour, a leaked character list detailing a number of people involved in a Take Two game codenamed ?Rush?, many of who seem a perfect fit for a GTA game. This list ? intended as descriptions for potential voice actors ? even alludes to some likely protagonists.

The De Silva brothers seem like the most likely main characters: Simon, Albert and Kevin De Silva each have a more detailed description, though Kevin?s details don't pin him as a typical Rockstar protagonist.

Another potential main character from the casting call could be Mitch Hayes ? a ?wise cracking, highly successful FBI agent? with ?a sense of humor?. Or, alternatively, Chad, a ?misogynist Beverly Hills party boy. Made money, but not as cool as he thinks he is.?

These are just a handful of the characters detailed, with perhaps many more to come, but it seems likely that there will be more than one main character, especially considering the route Rockstar took with the Lost And The ****ed/Ballad Of *** Tony DLC.

Our guess is there will be three distinct character types: a hard-up actor looking to regain success, the traditional gang character and a dodgy lawyer.

Multiplayer Will Return In GTA 5
8 March 2011 ? A job advertisement for Rockstar?s London office suggests multiplayer could make a return in GTA 5.

The job listing read ?We are seeking a talented Gameplay Programmer to develop systems related to gameplay and player [in]teraction for the multiplayer part of our current next-gen title (PS3/Xbox360)?, highlighting both current generation and consoles as a necessary details.

While this could relate to Max Payne 3 ? a series not known for its multiplayer ? it's more likely that Rockstar is hiring for another multiplayer component its next GTA game, just like GTA 4 and even Red Dead Redemption did previously.

We?ll have to wait and see if Max Payne 3 reveals a multiplayer mode prior to release, but for now it's safe to assume multiplayer will return.

GTA 5 Will Be Set In Hollywood, Modern Setting
7 March 2011 ? The combination of the leaked casting call and registered domain names hint at a number of things: firstly, the likelihood that GTA 5 may well be set in a Hollywood location, and perhaps a return to Vinewood and Los Santos.

For example, many of the characters in the casting call refer to a California/Hollywood setting. Many of the roles specifically refer to Beverly Hills or California, while others describe the types of characters you might expect to see in Hollywood.

Similarly, the use of domain names ? especially ones such as LifeInvader.com, which is probably a Facebook parody ? alludes to a modern setting; a step away from the last time GTA visited a 1990s-era Vinewood in San Andreas.

There?s pretty solid proof suggesting that GTA 5 will be set both in the modern day and in a Vinewood, Los Santos or San Andreas setting. We?d be surprised if it wasn?t.

GTA 5 Will Feature Corrupt Bankers/Solicitors
25 February 2011 ? Prior to revealing the casting call of potential GTA 5 characters, Superannuation found a set of five domain names that seem to suggest possible GTA 5 websites. A month later, another set of sites were uncovered that matched the typical Grand Theft Auto humour.

Many of these seem related to banking and solicitors, such as carolinabrokers.com, californiahomesbroker.com and myrtlebeachattorney.com. This suggests there will be a larger focus on lawyers and bankers, either as a playable character or a string of related missions.

No offense, but I really don't like that link or anything said in your quote.
Those guys are obviously just working out of rumors and speculations, nothing set.

They kept saying things "WILL" be, as if confirmed, followed by a bunch of text saying such is speculated, rumored, or expected.

GTA will always have a special place in my heart... and of course I'll be buying it day one pre ordered.

But I'm actually more stoked about the imminent release of Saints Row 3.
The Saints Row games have proven themselves to be alot more fun to play - even if they are much less realistic.
Saints Row seems to be taking up the slack where GTA is failing (sheer unadulterated fun)

L.A. again?

Strengthening long-standing rumors for years that the next Grand Theft Auto would be set in Los Angeles or a fictional version thereof, a source familiar with the game told Kotaku today that those rumors are true. GTA V will be set in some version of L.A., bringing the famous franchise to a place that last got the GTA treatment in the series' top-selling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. (So much for our other dream GTA V cities.)

We're also hearing from multiple sources that the game will feature more than just one playable character. That would seem to be a natural evolution for the series. Following the release of the PlayStation 2's Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City, PSP games set in the same cities as those console games let players control a single new character apiece. Those portable games helped establish the idea that there's more than one life worth living in a Rockstar-made GTA city.

Then, following the release of Grand Theft Auto IV the series' creators at Rockstar Games allowed gamers to play as a second and then a third character in the exact same high-definition version of Liberty City. Those who bought the base game and the two downloadable episodes could choose from the GTA IV's menu whether to play as Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz or Luis Lopez. Each had their own lengthy, interesting and distinct playable story. A GTA V that features more than one playable hero would extend this concept further.

Back when GTA IV was being shown to press, Rockstar representatives would stress the importance of the number in the title. As successful as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas were, they noted, it was the game that preceded them, GTA III that was a paradigm shift. They hoped and believed that GTA IV, by being a numbered game would have and merit some outsized influence of its own. If that is still the company's philosophy, then after Grand Theft Auto IV's un-numbered episodes, The Lost and ****ed and The Ballad of *** Tony, a numbered GTA V should again merit special attention. Shifting cities was not sufficient cause for a new numbered GTA before. A change to the series' formula, however, one that gives players more than one controllable character, would.

Rockstar has had a lot of experience with L.A., working with Team Bondi to create a mid-20th-century version of it for this year's L.A. Noire, presenting a drive-able version in Midnight Club and, most famously of all, turning it into the amazing Los Santos as one of three featured cities in GTA: San Andreas.

Rockstar Games did not respond to requests for comment about GTA V today. Should we hear them, we'll update this piece. Otherwise, look for the official trailer for the new game on November 2.

Let's hope this game is a "murder simulator" like the other ones.
So, L.A, or should I say, L.S? Not bad. But I still want to see a next-gen Vice City sometime. VC was my favorite city in the entire series.
Also, is it going to be only LS? I would prefer if they did the whole state of San Andreas in one game, maybe one character centered in each city? Imagine a San Andreas map with the area of Panau Island from JC2:

I can't wait to see more info on this game--I loved GTA IV, but the lack of winged aircraft was a little disappointing. I'd also like to see a weapon wheel like in RDR, because scrolling through weapons one at a time in GTA IV was a huge pain.2011-10-26 23:46:00

Also next October is the 10th anniversary of Vice City. ._.

YES! San Andreas! I was hoping for Vice City, but San Andreas is awesome too.

For what I've seen in the trailer, it looks like the map will be a big one...

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/2461/gta1.png
Huge mountain range, possibly Mount Chilliad? I really hope that you can climb to the top, and not that it's just there to mark the boundaries...
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/1527/gta5.png
Epic picture of Los Santos, but it doesn't seem as big as Liberty City from there...
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6069/gta4b.png
OMG OMG JET FIGHTERZ!!!1
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4126/gta3q.png
Cropduster and a farm, mountains on the horizon. A sign of how big the map might actually be.
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/3203/gta2u.png
Another awesome picture showing the wind turbines. The depth of field looks amazing!
http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/1162/gta6.png
Final picture, Shamal jet and the whole Los Santos. The weather and sunset effects are spectacular.
So far, it looks promising. We have seen mountains, farms, deserts, the city of Los Santos, new vehicles and planes. I'm really hoping for a game as big as San Andreas was in its time. However, we have only seen Los Santos and what seems to be the countryside, but what about San Fierro and Las Venturas? The trailer doesn't show any of those. Is the game going to be set only on LS and its countryside? I really hope not. Look again at the picture with the wind turbines. Las Venturas desert? And the planes, I suppose that the game area is going to be really big for them to be featured (and they're dang quick!). Awesome trailer anyway, really looking forward to the game.

I think that the man in the trailer is more than likely NOT Tommy Vercetti. R* are trying to break away from the old franchise while staying true to roots. They re invented LC in IV, detatching it from III and they will reinvent Los Santos in V without ties to VC or SA2011-11-02 23:42:00

We are very proud to officially announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.

A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.

If the map is REALLY big, then I think that it compensates. And I mean, LS being around the size of GTA 4 and the countryside 3 or more times as big as the city portion, filled with hills, highways, towns and all that stuff we know and love from SA.

And that also raises one question: If this GTA is limited to LS, and LS is a part of SA, how will the map boundaries work? Will the map be surrounded by water, therefore leaving LS separated from the rest of the state, or will it be surrounded by mountains in some points, keeping that SA feeling but also making everyone think "oh how I wish I could go up and beyond that mountain"?

Anyone heard the rumours about the possible release date? It could be 24th May...

http://media.officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk/files/2011/11/GTA-5-ps3-releaae-date-610x275.jpg

The "2405" on the kerb could mean 24/05 (DD/MM format).

Also, the song in the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqS721yggyw) was released on 24th May 1968 (Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogdens'_Nut_Gone_Flake))

Then again, a load of other dates could probably be found and this could all just be a coincidence.

BUMP!

Saw a comment related to this and decided to look it up. Remember the part in the trailer with the jetsky?

Look at the bridge. Possible Golden Gate or that other bridge from SF? I thought that the picture was from the port area of LS at first, but now I'm intrigued. :/

I am taking over this discussion over from now on considering i am the biggest GTA fan here and am therefore dominant over all of you. First of all, it has been confirmed that the new Grand Theft Auto game will take place in Los Santos and NOT San Andreas. This is a good way to split GTA into another Trilogy and to put a different story in San Fierro and Las Venturas. That being said,I expect GTA VI to take place in Vice City and NOT anywhere else, Rockstar Games does not expect to go anywhere else in the serie without first seeing a modern version of what has become of the past cities. Vice City and San Andreas took place in a different eras so that is a good reason to put a game in a more modernized fun version of the GTA cities. Yes, it has been confirmed that animals such as dogs will be in the new game as hunting animals appeared in Red Dead Redemption. The character from the trailer is indeed NOT the protagonist, Rockstar is too smart to give away their next Rockstar. But from what i can tell of his voice, i expect the new character to be a hispanic male, and nothing more. The character from the trailer that appears to be a protagonist is more obviously a character that gives you missions. It is more likely that Rockstar will shorten the release time of GTA V and lengthen the release time of Max Payne 3 considering nobody really cares about Max Payne 3. Rockstars trailer is no less astonishing enough to spark a big hype upon the gaming community. The new trailer reaching an amazing 7 million views on youtube in no less than a week will with no less than a doubt convince Rockstar that the advertising time for GTA V should be no longer than 7 to 9 months as have been rockstars previous release times. The game already appears amazing and i wouldnt be suprised if there were absolutely no delays. Until the next trailer comes out, see you guys later.
Edit: Actually, lets discuss the main character and his story, at the beginning of the trailer the character questions himself about his existence in Los Santos rather than his original existence in some other Country/City which could make him an immigrant just like niko. He said that he saw that kind of life in the movies and wanted to live it out and retire from a life of crime, which must mean that he had alot of experience and must be in his mid 30s just like most GTA characters. He claims that he wants to be a family man, so he probably isnt married and doesnt have any children, which opens the option of dating in the video game just like San Andreas and GTA IV. He also says that he bought a big house, which may mean that his past escapades have made him able to raise a fortune and probably live in the Vinewood area of Los Santos. He claims that he wanted to be a dad "like all the other dads" which is another implication that he does not have any children and is at the age that he wants to settle down a bit, which also means that the man in the trailer(who appears to be in his mid 50s) is most likely NOT the protagonist. After that he says "We'd play ball and sit in the sun, but, well, you know how it is" this statement means that after trying to escape the life of crime he has reached another problem within Los Santos, which may imply that the narrator for the trailer should be the main character. And that statement marks the end of the narration, so we have to wait until the next trailer because that is probably when the main character is going to be revealed.

First of all, it has been confirmed that the new Grand Theft Auto game will take place in Los Santos and NOT San Andreas. This is a good way to split GTA into another Trilogy and to put a different story in San Fierro and Las Venturas cheaply reuse a ton of 3D model data they bought from the developers of L.A. Noire.

Just fixed that for you.

http://www.examiner.com/playstation-in-charlotte/massive-gta-5-information-leak-from-ex-rockstar-employee

(Number 8 has spoilers for previous games. Avoid if you haven't played)

Hello!

I am a friend of someone who recently got sacked from RockStar North for general misconduct. Because one contract to RockStar covered everything, including secrecy, and his contractual obligaton was now removed, he was legally allowed to spill the beans on Rockstar's upcoming GTA V. And he is making **** sure everyone knows about it.

Here is the info you really want:

1. The protagonist will be one character, and one character alone. His name is (as some rumours said) Albert De Silva. He's a half hispanic man who was once part of a crime family in Vice City. He decided to settle down and have kids in Los Santos. He has one son called Kevin De Silva who is your stereotypical CoD player. He's lazy, useless and shouts racial abuse online and is really into FPS games. Kevin does admire his Dad though.

2. Multiplayer will hold 32 people on the Xbox and PS3. I wasn't told how many were able to be on the PC. Just like in RDR, players will be able to form Gangs. These gangs are not ranked through XP anymore, but via Reputation. Instead of gang hideouts, you can do jobs that range from robbing a launderette to breaking into a military base and stealing state-of-the-art weaponary. The Gang leader has much more control over his or her gang by being able to rank members of their gang and setting more specific objectives to specific members of their gang. Gangs can have their own terratory but this only applies to areas inside the city of Los Santos.

3. The map is about 5x as large as the GTA IV map and the City of Los Santos takes up just under half of this area (so it's a bit bigger than 2 GTA IV Liberty Cities).

The map is (like most GTAs) seperated into three different sections. 4. Planes are flyable, they range from World War 2 fighter planes to Private Jets.

5. Cars and guns are customisable to an extent, for example, you can cusomise a gun to have a supressor on it and you can install nitrous into cars.

Here's some stuff you might like:

1. The protagonist is the "rich guy" from the GTA V debut trailer. You get to learn more about this man in the second when he talks about his troubles. You only see the protagonist twice in the trailer. First time is the side of his face and second time is when he is driving a Deceptor (Audi R8). The people robbing the jewellery store are just with the protagonist. He is driving the van ready to get away.

2. Gunfights are more realistic. When you are shooting a gun out of a window of a car, depending on how fast it's going you will have troubles aiming due to shaking cameras.

3. The game is due in May 2013. A more specific date has not been decided because the game is still needing 6 months to be fully developed. They will have a playable demo at E3.

4. Police chases are now way more than either running or driving. Depending on how wanted you are, police may bring out riot shields and flash bangs. 5. When someone reaches 4 star wanted level, there will be a radio warning on some stations.

6. Radio stations now do traffic reports that are actually correct. So if you don't know what route to take, you can check the traffic reports on your phone or the radio. 7. The in-game TV now has many more channels

8. The protagonist DOES NOT die unlike in the last two Rockstar games.

9. The underworld actually has a working economy that you can contribute too by buying and selling drugs, weapons and illegal cars in single player.

10. The protagonist can take drugs which will have some effects. But smoking weed on the streetwalk will lead to getting a one star wanted level.

11. Police cars will go after you if you're obviousely breaking the speed limit. Having high speed crashes will also damage your health.

Wanted levels:

1 star - police follow you on foot and try to make an arrest. No sirens, no car chases (unless you are speeding).

2 star - police will still attempt to make an arrest. If a weapon is drawn then the police will begin opening fire. Police will use stun guns if a weapon is not drawn.

3 star - Chases begin and the police don't care how they stop you, they just want to do it.

4 star - road traps, radio stations and much more hostile police.Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 24 in-game hours for someone matching your description.

5 star - shoot to kill, arrest only if it's made very possible. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 48 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Few missions become unavailable if you are wanted.

6 star - military vehicles come after you. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 72 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Some missions become unavailable if you are wanted.

Essentially this is on the same level as "MY DAD OWNS ACTIVISION AND HE'LL BAN ALL OF YOU" so take this with a grain of salt.

There's nothing revolutionary at all.

I wonder how many leaks turned out to be true for GTA IV
Plus NDA, that's a whole separate contract... I don't think anybody would want to risk killing their entire chance in the game industry.

Even if that is somehow 100% accurate theres no guarentee it will be by the time the game is done. We're always hearing from developers post release about things that got cut or changed for various reasons.

I believe that the screens were taken from a console, because the GFX seem really toned down on them. Hopefully they will make a PC version that:

1. Isn't just a crappy port;
2. Has better graphics.

A lot of the screenshots have cluttered foregrounds obscuring the background. I'd like to see some gameplay to see how much pop in and fogging there is...

In the tennis and parachute ones especially the terrain in the far background has really low res textures and looks barren.

I wonder if they're going to use the same kind of tricks that Skyrim did by surrounding you with pretty stuff in the immediate vicinity that tries to hide the bad draw distance. The lay of the land was cleverly designed too but sometimes it felt claustrophobic because of it.

Well, draw distance has been a problem since GTA 3 (but mostly SA). Who has never crashed the Hydra into a tree that was spawned from Oblivion just a few seconds before you could pass through it?

In fact, the tennis picture has some visible artifacts in the mansion's shadows, and the mountains in the background seem too low-res for its distance. However, the parachute picture has an acceptable detail decay, at least for console standards. The motorbike screen looks pretty too.

Something that I look forward graphics-wise is the new motion blur/bokeh effect. Motion blur can be noticed in the jet screen and what seems to be bokeh in the bicycle screen. Also, the helicopter screen at night shows amazing lighting effect, and the water in the biplane photo is gorgeous.

GTA V offically announced for Spring 2013

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/45951/grand-theft-auto-v-is-coming-spring-2013.html

Today, we're proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide spring 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V takes place in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California in the largest and most thriving game-world we have ever created set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and for miles beyond – from the tops of the mountains to the depths of the ocean.
Starting next week November 5, 2012, Grand Theft Auto V will become available for pre-order everywhere and fans can expect a host of new information to become available in November.

Look for downloadable desktop versions of the brand new artwork above coming very soon.

"depths of the ocean." Are they including under water exploration?

The long wait is over at last. With the December issue, Grand Theft Auto V fans can pore over every detail we could get about Rockstar Games' highly anticipated sequel. Over the course of 18 pages (our biggest cover story yet!), we introduce the three main protagonists, discuss the groundbreaking way you use them, and explore the reimagined Los Santos – the biggest open world Rockstar has created to date. The massive feature also divulges and dissects many more aspects of the game fans won't want to miss.

Makes me think the 3 characters in IV + DLC were an experiment for this.

I hope you can decide who to play, so if I want I can finish one's story then go for the others, for example. Either have a menu at the start asking which campaign you want to play or an in-game option to change when you feel like. (and not being force-fed the three stories at once, making it difficult to understand what's going on)

Also, I believe these hadn't been posted on here yet:

According to details included in Game Informer's (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/11/08/december-cover-revealed-grand-theft-auto-v.aspx) cover feature, the "expansive environment includes beachfronts, wine country, a large wilderness area surrounding a fully explorable Mt. Chiliad (Oh yes!), a Salton Sea region, a military base (OH HELL YES!)" as well as "the sprawling suburban hills leading up to the bustling urban center of Los Santos."

Officially hyped.

Americana at Its Most Felonious

Q. and A.: Rockstar?s Dan Houser on Grand Theft Auto V

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2012/11/10/arts/10GRAND/10GRAND-articleLarge.jpg Rockstar Games
Michael, one of the three playable characters in the coming Grand Theft Auto V, by Rockstar Games.

By CHRIS SUELLENTROP

Published: November 9, 2012

The Grand Theft Auto (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/c/computer_and_video_games/grand_theft_auto/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) series of video games is a rare cultural phenomenon: incredibly popular (the last version sold more than 25 million copies globally), widely condemned (by politicians like Hillary Rodham Clinton (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/14/nyregion/14hillary.html) and Joseph I. Lieberman) and adored by the highbrow (Junot D?az is a huge fan (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121460385251911957.html)). Yet its creators at Rockstar Games have been able to shroud themselves in relative mystery for more than a decade, even after a Federal Trade Commission investigation (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/arts/television/04arts-GRANDTHEFTAU_BRF.html?ref=grandtheftauto) in 2005, when copies of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas were yanked from store shelves after a fan unlocked some sexual content that had been hidden in the game?s code.

With Grand Theft Auto V, the first major title in the series in five years, coming out next spring, Rockstar seems more eager than it has been in the past to talk about itself and the maturation of its work. Rather than being inspired solely by gangster films and TV shows like ?Miami Vice,? the Grand Theft Auto games now try to capture, albeit in heightened form, aspects of contemporary life. The new game, set in a fictionalized Los Angeles called Los Santos, tackles the aftermath of the credit crunch and the housing crisis for three criminals, each of whom is playable. (Previously, the games focused on a protagonist.) Yet it's still Grand Theft Auto: In a demo version one character pours a ring of gasoline around a truck and lights it on fire.
During a recent conversation in SoHo, Dan Houser, Rockstar?s head writer and vice president for creative ? as well as the brother of the studio president, Sam Houser ? spoke about what he and Rockstar are trying to achieve with Grand Theft Auto V, how his Englishman-in-New-York status informs his writing, and whether he thinks the studio has changed with time. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Q. What do you want people to get out of the games that you make?
A. Obviously, we want them to be entertained. We want them to be stimulated, questioned, amused, all of the other higher and lower things one gets from entertainment.
Books tell you something, movies show you something, games let you do something. Open-world games have an enormous strength, creatively. As well as letting you do something ? run around, fly a helicopter, be the hero, be the antihero, whatever ? they also let you be in the world, passively. So we?ve taken some of the things the director used to control within the movie and handed it to you as the consumer of the medium.
We have a vision for what we think interactive entertainment can become, and each time we get closer to realizing those ambitions.

Q. What is that vision?
A. It's the stuff we?re trying to realize with this game. It's a world brought to life, in which you are able to exist and explore and have the benefits of some kind of narrative pull-through, a world that exists and doesn?t exist at the same time. We?ve made something that sort of is Los Angeles and sort of isn?t. And that?s deliberate, that it isn?t an exact replication of it. We wanted this post-crash feeling, because it works thematically in this game about bank robbers. And that seems like it's going to endure through the next year.

Q. Do you start with a place, or with the qualities and themes you want to address?
A. The longest part of the process of making one of these games is making the world. If this wasn?t the right way to do it, which I think it probably is, anyway, just from a pure production standpoint you have to start building the world as soon as possible. We start with the place, and then the characters come out from the place.

Q. How does the new, three-character structure help you get closer to the ambitions you have for the medium?
A. Just at the conceptual level, the idea was three separate stories that you play in one game. The next bit was, let?s not have the stories intersect once or twice but have them completely interwoven. It felt like it was going to be a real narrative strength: you get to play the protagonist and the antagonist in the same story.

Q. Is it fair to say that your games are satires of American culture?
A. I think it's fair to say that they are set in a world that is a satire of American media culture.

Q. Does your Britishness give you a perspective on this country that illuminates your satire?
A. I don't think anyone in America really understands what growing up in Britain in the ?70s and ?80s was like. Eighty percent of the television was American. Every movie you saw was American. Even though there are all these great British pop stars, 95 percent of them sing in American accents, and they all sing in an American idiom. So there was a great love of America, and maybe some junior-partner resentments for it. But it's a very different relationship compared to America?s contemporary relationship with Britain, where a few small things are cherry-picked and told how wonderful they are.
My brother and I have a certain perspective as people from London who then moved to New York. But the guys in Scotland at our Rockstar North studio, they have a different perspective, as people who never lived here. And then Lazlow Jones, who writes a lot of the satire with me, is a good ol? boy from Oklahoma. The games have always been, in some ways, a British response to Americana, rather than America. But it's not just that.

Q. You?re now 39. Has growing older changed your approach to video games?
A. In terms of whether we?re too old to be prancing around in allegorical spandex, no, I don't think so. I suppose our reputation as a company was that we?re profoundly antisocial, histrionic and looking to be controversial. And we simply never saw it in that light. We saw ourselves as people who were obsessed by quality, obsessed by game design. I would use as Defense A the game called Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. For us, that was as important as any game we made, if for no other reason than showing that we could make an interesting game about anything.

Q. I hear the episode when a fan unlocked some hidden code inside Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and ended up prompting a Federal Trade Commission inquiry was traumatic for your company.
A. It's quite hard having your in-box read by lawyers, in a country where you?re only a resident. It was a really tough time, it shook us to our core, and we found it very, very unpleasant to go through. As anyone would, being told off for stuff when you felt it was the medium you worked in that was under attack, not the nature of the content.

Q. There are people who still aren?t delighted by the treatment of women in your games.
A. Of course. But is their argument that in a game about gangsters and thugs and street life, there are prostitutes and strippers ? that that is inappropriate? I don't think we revel in the mistreatment of women at all. I just think in the world we?re representing, in Grand Theft Auto, that it's appropriate.

Q. Are there games you play in which you think, ?Oh, I?m going to steal that,? or, ?I?m going to do that but do it better, do it right??
A. Anyone who makes 3-D games who says they?ve not borrowed something from Mario or Zelda is lying ? from the games on Nintendo 64, not necessarily the ones from today. But I would argue in that regard we?ve certainly been more sinned against than sinning.

Q. I think of you guys as a particularly cinematic studio.
A. I suppose what we?ve borrowed from cinema is cinematography. We haven?t borrowed a lot structurally. We?ve borrowed from TV structurally, we?ve borrowed from long-form novels structurally. Even a short game like Max Payne (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/15/arts/video-games/max-payne-3-from-rockstar-games.html) is 10, 12 hours long. It's several action movies back to back, in terms of how the story works.

Q. The closest thing to Grand Theft Auto I can think of that someone is doing in a different medium is the work of David Simon, who has tried to capture cities, in ?The Wire? but even more so in ?Treme.? It's quite different, but TV is similar in the sense that people spend 30, 40 hours with a show.
A. I haven?t seen ?Treme.? I never even saw ?The Wire.? One of my weird disciplines is that I don't really watch a lot of those shows, if they relate to what we do. I only watched a tiny bit of ?The Sopranos.? No ?Boardwalk Empire.? No ?Breaking Bad.? Wherever it's too close to crime, gangster, underbelly fiction, and it's supercontemporary, I decided, for professional reasons, I have to avoid it.

Q. At this stage in the process, what?s left to do with Grand Theft Auto V?
A. We are editing, fixing, removing, replacing, adding, avidly. It's the equivalent of, if you wrote a book, and you had two million spelling mistakes. And you had to do them by hand, in a language you didn?t understand. But once it's working, you can sit there and watch the world go by. I still find that magical about them. You don't get that with anything else. The life might be fake, but it's still the closest we?ve come to a living artwork. I think that?s the core appeal of them.

Two helicopters swoop down over the city, zigzagging between looming skyscrapers. They are searching for a third chopper, and they find it, hovering beside an anonymous government building. Quickly, the craft glides away from its pursuers while a gunman leans out and fires back.
This is an aerial shoot-out, hundreds of feet above the densely crowded streets, a breathtaking action set-piece, befitting the most vainglorious Hollywood blockbuster. But you are in control; it's your movie. And as shots ring out, one chopper spirals out of the sky, black smoke billowing from its shattered tail. In the background, a neon pink sunset detonates across the sky.
This is Grand Theft Auto (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/grand-theft-auto) V, the latest title in a series that has dragged video games (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/games) kicking and screaming onto the cultural agenda. When the first details started leaking across the web last Thursday, social media channels went into meltdown as gamers scrambled for titbits of information. Many will be talking about little else for the next three months.
Developed at Rockstar's Edinburgh studio, with input from several of the publisher's other developers around the globe, GTA V is another darkly humorous crime adventure, crammed with sleazy gangsters, corrupt politicos and dodgy cops. While GTA IV took place in Rockstar's cold, shadowy version of New York – the ironically titled Liberty City – the latest title heads cross-country to Los Santos, a monstrous, sprawling pastiche of Los Angeles.

Here we meet lead character Michael, an ageing bank robber who fulfils that most fecund of crime-fiction archetypes: a crook who's made good, retired to a fancy house, but now misses the excitement of the old days. In the demo Rockstar shows us, he starts out sunbathing by the pool like Ray Winstone in Sexy Beast, the city shimmering in the distance beyond his landscaped gardens. The player is able to get up and explore the bleached stucco mansion, passing the tennis court (you can play a match if you like), then bumping into Michael's bored wife as she clambers into a sports car on the front drive. "If you want to know where I am, read your credit card statement," she yells as tyres squeal. "I'm feeling lucky, I'll check the hospitals!" he calls back. And slowly but surely, his previous career begins to beckon.

The basic structure is similar to previous titles. There is a series of missions which have to be completed to tell the over-arching story, but when you're not taking part in these, you're free to explore the environment; driving the endless roads, discovering mini-games, meeting characters, and generally getting into trouble. But GTA V will also make some radical structural changes.
In the past, players would have controlled a lone character all the way through the game. Here, you have three, switching between them at will. Alongside Michael, there's Franklin, a young kid working in vehicle repo for a bunch of Armenian gangsters, and the fascinating Trevor, a psychotic career criminal with a shady military background.
These guys all have their own skills and specialities and will often attempt missions together, the player sticking with one character throughout the task, or swapping back and forth, relying on the computer to control the others.
Why the change? Why three characters? "It was partly just to do something totally new," says Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar and co-writer of all the Grand Theft Auto titles since GTA London. "Partly, too, it was because at that point we were deep into the work on the two DLC episodes of GTA IV, and we thought, well, the bits where all the stories crossover is kind of cool, so why don't we just do that in one game? So okay, let's just do multiple characters. With Michael we wanted this older guy who's still tough, but he's retired. That's a great way to start a game – at the end. That seemed fresh.
"Franklin was the next one we came up with because we wanted a younger character, just so he could be the guy on the up, contrasting with the guy on the down – one could mentor the other. And in some ways, I suppose, Franklin is most like your traditional GTA protagonist. And then out of nowhere, the idea of Trevor came to us. He is the guy who does everything awful, relentlessly! He has his own charm, but he … he's a relentless maker of mischief. Not without some principles though, but totally different principles to Michael – an exact opposite take on what it means to be a protagonist in a GTA world. Michael is more about ego and Trevor is more about id, I suppose".

This provides an interesting gameplay dynamic, but it is also about story. Instead of telling one tale which heightens toward a single dramatic finale, GTA V cuts between these three interlocking narratives, drawing parallels and distinctions between the men. And instead of one set-piece conclusion, the game is structured around a series of five or six mega-heists which take place throughout the game, and which other missions lead up to. The idea is to get gamers into big set-piece thrill-fests like GTA IV's Three Leaf Clover much more quickly.
Some of the artwork Rockstar has released shows the characters jumping out of a van with gas masks, overalls and machine guns, bringing to mind Michael Mann's movie Heat. Like that film, this seems to be a game about professional criminals and the weird working relationships they maintain amid the testosterone and violence.
Relationships seem key. In GTA IV, some people felt all that stuff got annoying – looking after Niko's cousin Roman, taking calls from gangsters wanting to hang out, catching up with girlfriends. There's no romance this time, but the phone is back ("we've evolved it to reflect the modern world with smartphones," says Dan), although it seems the interplay between the main characters will be the focus.
"You have other people you can hang out with, but the main people you choose are the other protagonists," he says, stressing that the intricacies are still being worked on. "If you're playing as Michael and you want to play a game of tennis, you can call up Franklin and ask him. You are actually getting to see the main bulk of the story and also spend time with these people off-mission – that side of it gives it a vibrancy that's a lot stronger than with Roman or anyone else.
"On the emotional narrative side, it's stronger just because of the nature of the rest of the game, and on the mechanics side, hopefully we've just designed it better, we've smoothed off the rough edges of it and made it a stronger part of the game".
On the subject of Roman, there have been rumours other characters from previous games will turn up in GTA V. Dan says that no one before GTA IV will be in it – the move to HD created a schism in this fictional universe, rendering CJ, Tony and co, as mythical characters from a bygone era. But will we see stories from the previous game looping into this one? "I think that might be too mannered," says Houser. "Nico had a particular kind of story and we're trying to make this different. We might allude to things from that world, but we didn't want it to feel like, well, here's the opposite of an immigration story – we wanted a fresh take on what it means to be a criminal in this world of hyper-real Americana".

It looks like there will be a new approach to music too. Inspired by Rockstar's successes with Red Dead and Max Payne, missions will now be accompanied by an interactive score rather than radio play. "We though could do something interesting if we scored missions in GTA," says Houser. "Obviously we didn't want to lose radio stations, so we thought we'd do both.
"Exactly how we're going to balance between the two we're not entirely sure yet – we're still trying to figure that out. But we have some very cool people doing the score, different people, who will work in the same stem-based system that we used in the other games".
You forget how important music is in this game – and then you watch the GTA V demo and see Trevor leaping into a battered old truck and screaming off into the desert playing Radar Love, and it all comes back. It will be interesting to see how a score competes.
Meanwhile, there's another reason why there are three lead characters: GTA V is too geographically immense for a lone protagonist to explore. This is the largest environment Rockstar has built, big enough – as many previews have pointed out already – to contain the last two GTA titles as well the publisher's vast Western adventure Red Dead Redemption.
Like LA itself, Los Santos is a patchwork of neighbourhoods with a downtown area, a gang-infested southern district, and the prosperous areas in the hills. But the game world extends out into the fictitious state of San Andreas, Rockstar's interpretation of southern California. There are farmlands, deserts, villages, mountains; there is even a functioning ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Trevor lives in a stinking shack out in Blaine County, a deserted coastal region, modelled on California's Salton City. The first time we meet him, he's on the john having a noisy bowel movement; Rockstar never shies away from these sorts of details.

Importantly, the whole map is open from the start. Players can take a chopper and fly out over the hills, parachuting down onto the peak of Mount Chiliad. They can jet-ski, mountain bike, play golf, exercise. They don't have to, they just can.
The city streets are teeming with mini-tasks and money-making endeavours. During our demo, we watch Franklin driving around downtown and notice a Gruppe 6 security van pull into a petrol station – we can turn that over for some quick cash, but will inevitably attract some fervent attention from the cops.
Out in the sticks, beyond the city limits, the feel is more Red Dead Redemption, with dynamic encounters amid the wilderness; Game Informer's recent feature on the game mentions hitchhikers and broken down cars; all potential traps for unwary explorers.
"Environment is important," says Houser. "Games are very geographical – they present space almost better than they present time, and we try to use that, to showcase variety between different landscapes. It's this idea of a digital holiday: being able to explore spaces that don't really exist is one of the the things that's fascinating about open world games. It's not just about doing the activities we've set, there's also a sense of being there.
"If we've done a good job, the shoot-outs are fun but so is cruising through the world in a car you really like, listening to music – if these elements feel somehow consistent with each other, then we're on the right path to something cool".
And, yes, the shoot-outs do look like fun. In the mission we're shown, Michael, Trevor and Franklin have been employed by a covert agency, the FIB, to swipe a prisoner from another set of government operatives. It involves piloting a helicopter to a downtown building, rappelling down a rope, smashing in through the windows, and getting back into the craft with your confused and terrified hostage.
Michael is the one doing the smash and grab, while Trevor pilots the helicopter and Franklin lurks on a nearby rooftop with a sniper rifle, picking off enemy targets. Again, you can keep swapping between them, grabbing different aspects of the action, or you can stick with one protagonist, concentrating on your own key skills. It's exciting stuff, it's what we've always loved GTA for – that sense of freedom, of anarchy, in a functioning world. The sense that extraordinary things will happen.
We don't know much else about the missions yet; but Houser is keen to stress one key aspect. "We've focused on variety," he explains, "I don't think players will say, 'I'm constantly being told what to do, and I go there, I do it, I leave and I do everything in exactly the same way!' I definitely don't think that will be a problem".
And space is important, space is a big issue. Some have already questioned why GTA V needs to be so huge. But Houser bats the concerns right back. "We wanted to make a big place, as much as anything, to allow you to fly," he laughs. "A lot of the decisions, we're talking about them here on a philosophical level, but they're also practical decisions, too: we're making a game. You have to understand the medium. On an obvious level we wanted somewhere big so you can fly properly – we have a lot of missions that involve flying, in helicopters or whatever, it was logical. Also, Jet skis work better around LA than they would in New York.

"We're using the environment to let us have toys we couldn't have had otherwise. And equally, we're using the story and environment to introduce missions that can be more extreme. In some ways we wanted the game to have a larger-than-life Hollywood feel; the stories we heard in LA, we wanted to capture them in the game. If the place isn't informing what we're doing, we're not using it correctly."
Los Angeles. Los Santos. After the bleak, chilly despair of GTA IV this an enormous tonal shift, recalling the sun-streaked abandon of GTA: Vice City, the eighties-obsessed PlayStation (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/playstation) 2 masterpiece that some feel is the best title in the series. And although the follow-up to that title, GTA: San Andreas, explored a little of this place, GTA V already feels like it has plunged into the decadent heart of the city like no game before it.
Driving around the intricately detailed streets, we spot tributes to landmarks like Muscle beach and the Hollywood sign, we see mime artists and weirdos patrolling the pavements, there's a guy dressed as Jesus – that guy is really out there in Santa Monica, posing for photos with tourists. There are dodgy fast food joints with names like The Lucky Plucker, there are juice bars and boutiques. The sense of place is incredible; a sort of skewed, woozy take on the real thing. Los Angeles. Los Santos. The two are inextricably linked, but it is LA that the game is really thinking about.
"Since 2008, we've been going out there for for a week or two at a time with different groups from the team," says Houser. "Our researchers did an incredible job of finding us some of the strangest people – retired cops, people with a knowledge of the LA underworld – and we'd hang out with them ... just to see what happened. Whatever skill we have is in taking all of that stuff and amalgamating it into something that feels cohesive. There can't be any particular science to that – the interpretation of the world is our skill, that's where the art is. There's enormous pleasure in wandering about in LA with people who've done crazy things".
Perhaps only a video game could capture the essence of a contemporary city in this way. Houser shies away from such hyperbole, he knows GTA V must function as a game more than anything else, but the team working on it have wider ambitions, too. I ask him if GTA means anything. "I hope so!" he laughs, "otherwise it's pointless! Without being too annoying and avoiding the question, hopefully the games say lots of different things; but I think that for us, the correct response is to turn the question around and ask, what do they mean to you?
"It's not for us to sit there and say, well, this is what it's about. We've got lots of themes we want to explore, be it about advertising, about dreams, immigration, about being an assassin and what that means – some of which will work, plenty of which will probably fail. But it's not for us sit there and say that. Our statement is the game".
Baudrillard would love the version of America that Rockstar has constructed, a hyper-real theme park of violence, corruption and excitement. But you don't have to think about it. You don't have to think at all. GTA V might be about friendship or ambition or regret, but it also looks to be a game in which you can blast through the streets in a truck, boot filled with guns; a game where you can pilot a jet fighter over the Californian landscape; where you can bike down a mountain or jet ski into that fluorescent sunset.
GTA has always been about possibilities. That is why it is so exciting to see the series return, amid the indie titles it has inspired, and the Triple A titles that have grown up in its shadow. Grand Theft Auto pushes at what game worlds are, it is inarguably ambitious. Yet sometimes it just wants to blow up helicopters above the streets of downtown Los Santos. And that, in the end, is absolutely fine.

What are the chances that the parachuting guy is trying to LAND on the train?

The first thing I'm going to do is climb that mountain to see if there's any side missions up there.

I still remember this one moment in San Andreas. I was watching my friend play, and he was going up the mountain, and reached the clearing about half way up with the log cabin (I seem to remember it being during a mission and there was a shootout). Suddenly, out of nowhere, there is a plane - which crashes and explodes, obliterating everyone in sight.

watched this a few minutes ago. They make it look good, I'll give them that. I was highly disappointed with GTAIV, so I'll probably be slower to get this until I can see more gameplay footage and see previews/reviews for it. Thanks for posting!2012-11-14 16:24:00

Dear all,

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team

Question is, now how will the PC release (if there's one) follow up?

I'm kind of split about having animals in the GTA games. Because they are so much about the glee of a rampage, and I remember way back with GTAIII -- this may have just been an excuse at the time -- but Dan Houser said that the reason there were no animals in GTA was because the developers felt strongly about animal cruelty and did not want to enable players to cause it, which simply meant keeping animals out of the game since they weren't going to program unrealistic stuff like invincible pets. I think the same thing went for children. The first GTA to have animals at all, I think, was GTAIV with the pigeons. Which of course, you could shoot. Then of course there was the hunting and things with Red Dead, and I figured, okay, they've evolved the philosophy, or it fits a slower and less glee-rampage-y game like Red Dead. Okay.

Actually I'm not split, I really don't mind hitting the odd pooch in a game that lets you do pretty much anything else. But I wonder to what extent Houser's claim in GTAIII was a real thing. Maybe in the last decade or so he got mauled by a pitbull? Maybe there will be a kind of hokey "invincible pet" limitation to this one dog and no other animals are in the game. The dog is the focus of various escort missions by some rich California character, pick him up from the groomers, take him for walkies, evade the gangsters without the dog getting harmed...... uh......

Bleh. Now I've just made myself bored. GTA missions have kind of done all they can do, structurally, haven't they?

Well no, because now we'll have (potentially) 3 characters to play with in the missions.

With regards to animal cruelty, the animal killing in RDR did serve a purpose (ie for hunting), and is obviously relevant to the time period. However, hunting doesn't apply when you're dealing with urban environments like LA, New York and Miami. The only animals that would make sense in those games are common household pets.

Maybe people (PETA included) are getting over the fact that pixel structures resembling animals =/= real animals. Remember when they attacked Super Mario for wearing a cartoonish raccoon costume?

Don't forget that the game will also have forests, mountains, desert and redneck trailer parks.

Yeah, it's funny how they'd get so up in arms about us murdering animals, but won't care if we murder hundreds of innocent people.

I can imagine my GPU melting.

I'm unsure whether I should buy it for PS3 or PC.
On the PS3 side, it will surely come earlier, and driving with the triggers as pedals is the best video-game driving experience I could ever want;
On the PC side, there will be awesome mods, custom soundtracks, but we're not sure when it will be coming.

...which you can also do on a PC, easily. Also, driving with a racing wheel is the bestest video-game experience you could ever want, but you'd need to get a good wheel, and that would probably set you back $200-$300. Or, you could just get a cheap Xbox controller for $15-$20, and all Xbox controllers work on PC.

It's up to you, but for me it's a no-brainer. I could never not get this game on PC. It's just 500x better.

Looks quite impressive. I'll be surprised if the story or characters are as good as Sleeping Dogs though, that game is on another level. The combat was great as well, so Rockstar have a fair few things they can learn from the SD team.

Also I think a big problem for me is when we play games like this, a lot of us tend to project ourselves as being the main character to an extent, so when that character is really nasty and does lots of horrible things for no good reason, there's serious conflict there. Personally it really puts me off. I liked Vice City as Tommy Vercetti had a lot of attitude but he needed to be as the people he was taking on were killers, but he didn't do nasty things for the sake of being nasty. Playing as a character like Trevor though is a whole different story, he comes across as being an obnoxious bully.

I sure don't project myself as someone who runs around firing rocket launchers and running over old ladies.

That's funny, to me Trevor looks like the best character out of the three. The others just seem like Tommy and CJ again.

Haha, glad to hear it, that would be quite.. disturbing. Of course many of us play games in different ways and for different ways. I appreciate not everyone does the projection thing, so for some it's not much of an issue.2013-05-01 17:01:00

They all seem to have their quirks. Franklin does look to be a bit of generic want-away gangster, but I am in no way gonna write him off yet.

Rockstar have just announced that there’ll be two additional versions of Grand Theft Auto V when it releases later this year on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Anyone pre-ordering the game (regardless of version) will get the Atomic Blimp to pilot. However, the two additional versions will come with a big pile of other goodies.
The Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition includes: – Full retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V;
– Collectible SteelBook with Exclusive Artwork – features custom color and metallic treatments to bring out the detail of the Michael, Trevor and Franklin artwork created exclusively for this SteelBook;
– Blueprint Map – exclusive, 21.5″ x 26.75″ map displays a blueprint view of Los Santos and Blaine County;
– Special Ability Boost – Michael, Franklin and Trevor each have a unique special ability. With this boost, the special ability bar will generate 25% faster;
– Stunt Plane Trials – single-player Stunt Plane Trials let players take on additional aerial challenges spread throughout Los Santos and Blaine County;
– Bonus Outfits, Tattoos and More – Michael, Franklin and Trevor get bonus outfits in their wardrobes, character specific tattoos at tattoo parlors, and special deals from shopkeepers across Los Santos and Blaine County;
– Additional Weapons – when visiting Ammunation stores in single-player, merchants will have special weapons in their inventory available for free: the Pistol .50, Bullpup Shotgun and melee Hammer.
The Grand Theft Auto V Collector’s Edition includes the contents of Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition plus: – Grand Theft Auto V Security Deposit Bag with Logo Key – inspired by the heists in Grand Theft Auto V, this custom 10.75″ x 8.5″ money bag features a pop-up style lock and laser cut logo key to secure important items. The reverse side features a pressed Rockstar Games logo on the security mount with a framed ID window;
– Grand Theft Auto V New Era 9FIFTY(TM) Snapback Cap – this exclusive New Era 9FIFTY(TM) cap features an embroidered Los Santos logo on the front, a stitched, black Rockstar Games logo on the wearer’s left side, a Grand Theft Auto ‘V’ logo applique on the opposite side, and snapback closure for an adjustable fit;
– Custom Characters for Grand Theft Auto Online – get classic Grand Theft Auto characters to use within the Grand Theft Auto Online Character Creation System;
– Unique Vehicles and Garage Property – players will instantly receive a garage to store custom vehicles. In single-player, the garage will be stocked with the 1930′s style Hotknife hotrod and the CarbonRS sports bike. In Grand Theft Auto Online, players will get the high-end Khamelion electric car.
The Grand Theft Auto V Collector’s Edition comes packaged in a collectible outer box featuring a foil embossed Grand Theft Auto V logo on the top and finished with a matte, scuff-resistant film lamination housing all of the contents.
The Collector’s edition will be $150, whilst the Special edition will be $80. We’re awaiting localised pricing but that should give you some idea.

I'm a bit on the fence about this one. On one side, GTA V might be the only game I will buy this year, and I want to make a big deal of it. Wasn't caring too much about the in-game contents until they mentioned the Hotknife.
But on the other side, this edition will probably be a rarity in Brazilian stores, and the price will likely be astronomical. I might wait for the price to be revealed before I can be decided.

I believe that Los Santos is going to be way more sparse than Liberty City. In LC the buildings were all close together with very little space in between. Whereas in LS the buildings have plenty of space between them, and the blocks are larger.

Also, that's just the Los Santos portion of the map.

Some folk have way too much time on their hands.

Anyway, I'm sure Rockstar weren't lying to us about the size of the game world. I think we can say for certain is that it'll be more fun to explore than GTA IV.

That's not even the whole map. There's still more to the south and more to the north, so it's not like that's all there is to the map. I highly doubt the map ends right outside of what's we know.2013-05-31 18:35:00

Nope, GTA gameplay is never shown before launch. Better this way IMO, it keeps the experience as surprise. I think that GTA is one of the few franchises that can enjoy this benefit.

Good news, everyone!

Rockstar posted an "Asked and Answered" on their newswire today. You can check it out for yourself here (http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/50871/asked-answered-gtav.html).

TL;DR made exclusively to LBPC by your local secondary source for GTA V news (me :3 ) :

1. Michael, Trevor and Franklin have each their own lives, as well as own character circle, missions and activities. When switching during free roam, you might find the other character in an unexpected scenario. You can even hang out with any or all of them during free roam.

2. You can find the other characters on free roam, or call them. Obviously they have "plot armor", but should you ever manage to "kill" one of them, they will simply respawn fresh at the local hospital.

3. Common editions of the game will get the usual game map with basic info. This map will be double-sided. Special editions will also get the blueprint map with extra info.

4. Rockstar is trying their best to begin selling special editions in Brazil, but haven't managed to close a deal so far because our customs basically suck.

5. There will be lots of weapon customization options, and even more vehicle customization options.

6. Xbox 360 version will ship with two discs, one for a mandatory 8GB install and another to play. PS3 is one disc for install and play.

We need some gameplay!

7. I take that back. They will indeed be releasing gameplay videos before release. Now I just need to build enough willpower to prevent myself from watching it...

8. PC/next gen release details are still as confirmed as Half-Life 3.

9. We should be expecting details on the multiplayer soon. It's called "Grand Theft Auto Online" by the way.

10. They aim to create a fun, fair and cheater-free multiplayer experience.

11. Differences between Xbox 360 and PS3 versions should be minimal, to prevent further console wars.

12. Anyone that was afraid of more delays needs to get their stuff together. It's September for sure.

The surprising source for this round's latest batch of GTA V information is longtime Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu.
We had extensive coverage for Franklin's pet dog, Chop (http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/11661/article/gta-5-a-closer-look-at-chop-the-rottweiler/). Now, Famitsu confirms you will be able to replace Chop's (or any other pet dog's) accessories, such as their collar. You will also want to keep your eyes out for them, though, because you can lose your pet dog. Wild animals will also be in the game, and you can choose to hunt them. Famitsu says there will be more than 15 animals, although it's unclear if they're referring only to wild animals or to all the animals for the entire game.
Outside of this, each character will have a particular walk, adding to the realism, and overall animations for these will be improved. As earlier revealed in some character art, there will be an underwater mission. Trevor and Michael will get to go to this mission together, in jet skis.
FInally, Famitsu confirms GTA V's Japanese release date of October 10, 2013, for both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.
The more details are revealed, the more sim like GTA V seems. It also seems like Rockstar is going for a strong international push, given all this exclusive information shared with Famitsu. Grand Theft Auto appears to be one of those evergreen franchises, but Rockstar still has to face the Japanese gamer's stiff resistance with Western games. The Last Of Us itself recently saw very strong sales in the country at launch, only for it to dip in succeeding weeks.

Nobody is going to post news? Alright.

First, the official website (http://www.rockstargames.com/V/) has been updated. Three new panels are unlocked: "Local Artisans", "Exclusive Country Clubs" and "Serenity and Wellness".

Second, new screens:

Third, there was a leak. Sony made pre-loading of the digital version available, and the hackers have already exported the game files and tinkered a bit with them. The game wasn't cracked or anything, but some text, audio and video files could be accessed.

The tank on the bridge at the end of the trailer has the TC's cupola on the wrong side of the turret by modern standards. Poor loader will have to push rounds into the breech with their left hand.2013-08-31 01:31:00

Would recommend Shopto if you're looking for a speedy delivery. With GTA IV my friend received his the Friday before the Tuesday(the release date), and everyone says they're always a day early at the minimum!

On the other hand, my friend has preorder at Game and he's received an email declaring that Game nor any other reputable retailer are allowed to dispatch anything before the 16th.. Luckily shopto don't tend to listen to those things, and I've had no such email

Sounds like they're not very reputable.

I'm happy to wait to release day anyway. As long as I get it on the Tuesday, I'm happy. I've booked the week off work (not JUST for GTA... I have other things going on too ) so if it's delayed and I only get it on Friday or something, I'll be peed off.

I dreamed once that I was playing as Trevor, stopped at a river, then nicked a random sub that was parked by and went for a ride.

Last night I dreamt about a zombie apocalypse. I shot a zombie multiple times in the face with a shotgun, but it didn't seem to do anything. My group was getting a bit surrounded. Luckily someone in a helicopter lifted us to safety.

I saw a dream last night where I chased a rainbow-colored truck, driven by an obese, naked man with a horse-mask on.

Dreams are funny.

Some people are putting up videos from early copies.

There's snow and ice
Driving mechanics are arcadey
Cars appear to take less damage
You have to explore to uncover the in-game map

I saw the map. Daaaaaaaang. But I'm like you, I want to explore on my own and discover things. What I wish they'd do though is be able to have more than one waypoint on the map or be able to save locations like in a GPS or something. You see something while on a mission and be able to save that location to come back to later.

The flat turret faces and the location of the GPS (although it appears to be shared since the TC lacks an independant sight in the screenshot, despite it not being in an elevated doghouse) gives that away as a Leopard 2.

Some guys over at GTAForums have already played the game, here's some Q&A (no spoilers) :

Current Suggestions/Questions

Can police sirens be toggled? Yes, the sirens can be toggled by holding the "horn" button.
Is the map as big as R* said it was? I have yet to explore most of the map, and have only left the city once, I headed into the area above Vinewood as Trevor. The map feels huge so far, and it took a good long while to get out by Trevor via car from South LS.
How is the framerate? The framerate is stellar. It hasn't dropped once on me, much better than IV.
How are the texture? any pop ins? The textures look great, I haven't seen any pop ins yet. They're crisp and clear, especially during a clear sunny day. The game looks next gen for sure, yet shows some signs of age, like some of the ground textures can be a bit blurry depending on their scale. (Tiny rocks on the ground, little arrows on the road)
How's the draw distance? Massive, you can see the mountains from across the map, you can the the harbor in south LS from the Vinewood sign very clearly. There's no sh*tty blurry effect on the screen like there was in GTA IV.
How much depth is there to car modding? Surprisingly in-depth, spoilers, rims, bumpers, tune-ups, (Like turbo chargers) colours, etc.
Is the Airport Enterable? Yes. (Note: You will receive a 3 star wanted level if you go onto the tarmac. It is unknown at this time if the wanted level can be subverted, I.e. getting a pilot's license, and being allowed onto the tarmac.)
Can and how do the characters flick people off?
Can you shoot rival gang members to start a gang war? I shot some Ballas, but it didn't start a turfwar/gang notoriety type of thing. That may be something for later in the story, like in San Andreas.
Is Union Station in the game?
Are there multiple types of firetrucks?
Vigilante/Paramedic Missions?
How does driving feel? http://gtaforums.com...s/?p=1063288423 (http://gtaforums.com/topic/588458-gta-v-amalmosta-no-videosimagesspoilers/?p=1063288423)
Do cars instantly explode if their gas tank is shot? No, they will begin leaking fuel, and like in Hollywood, you can shoot the gas trail, which will ignite, meander its way back to its source, (the car) and then the car will blow up. Gives you some time to avoid the other wise insta-death of past GTA games.
How do the aiming mechanics feel?
Can you go prone?
Can we gamble at casinos/dogtracks?
Check the bumping into pedestrians issue?
Driving time across Los Santos?
Driving Time Around Map Perimeter?
Apache Helicopter? I have yet to encounter one, BUT I have seen the annihilator make a return, as well as the buzzard. There's advertisements in-game of military grade hardware, specifically, one appears to be a Russian Mi-something hind. Oh, and one in-game T.V. commercial shows off Apaches flying together. (Sorry about that slight leak Deff, I saw it while testing out the T.V. just now. Good chance they're in.) http://www.lifeinvad...k_cache_n_carry (http://www.lifeinvader.com/profile/warstock_cache_n_carry)
How soon can you access aircraft?
Custom soundtracks for PS3?
What are the control schemes?
How is the melee combat? http://gtaforums.com...s/?p=1063288243 (http://gtaforums.com/topic/588458-gta-v-amalmosta-no-videosimagesspoilers/?p=1063288243)
How bad is the gore. Descriptions? Dismemberment, blood stains. Huge splatters can appear on the wall behind a shotgun victim. Also, shotgun to the face = OH GOD WHERE'D HIS FACE GO?! I have yet to try this with sniper rifles.
Can you drift? Yes.
How is the vehicle damage? Varied. You can receive anything from a small paint scratch, to full body deformation, and tire removal. (Bump into another car, get a dent and a scrap, let a train hit you, or hitting a semi head on at a 100mph, will result in major body deformation, remember the swing set of death from GTA IV?)
What kinds of animals? So far, I've seen various species of dogs, cats, deer, cattle, birds, and goats. (I am still exploring, have yet to explore the water properly)
Can you have custom control schemes?
Do police shoot at 1 star? No, they will attempt to arrest you while on foot, and will chase you in vehicles if you get in one yourself. If you resist arrest long enough, you gain a two start wanted level. (Resisting arrest, I.e. being within police sight, without losing your wanted level for a certain amount of time, will spark them to use lethal force)
How diverse are the hairstyles?
How is motorcycle physics?
Can the music score be turned off?
Can you enter the prison?
Can you go diving from the start? You can certainly head to the beach, and dive in, but I've yet to encounter a scuba suit, so my adventures were short lived, the waters were murky, I suspect it was because I didn't have a scuba mask. Lung capacity is also a trainable skill.
Is it easy to identify enterable buildings?
Time to cross the map via flight?
Are rv's enterable?
Can characters get stains and debri on them? Yes, both dirt and blood, as well as the "wet clothes" look from being in the water.
Does Michaels Family roam the house?
Can you put ped's in the trunk?
Can you hold peds hostage?
How's the ped A.I.? Surprisingly responsive. Run through a boardwalk full of people, and watch as they flinch, jump out of the way, curse you, brace for impact, realistically slid up and over your hood and land on their feet on the other side with a scared look on their face. You'd think you were really running over a board walk full of real people. So many types of reactions. Not just the usual, "AHHHHH" *Barrel roll out of way*
Animal A.I.? Ahh, this is a good one, I experimented with deer in the hills north of Vinewood, deer will sniff the air, and flick and turn their ears and tails like real life deer. They will rear their heads up if they hear something, they'll get spooked and run away if they spot you, and they even grunt and huff like real deer.
How are the animations? Do they look stiff? The animations will actually surprise you. I don't want to say much, but they look VERY life like. I can't believe the amount of detail the R* team have put into them. They're so natural and fluid looking, that I keep forgetting this is running on 7 year old hardware.
Are there hydraulics?
Can commercial planes be flown? I'm not sure yet, private jets for sure, and there's advertisements for bigger planes in-game. Also, Warstock shows a big cargo plane known as the "Titan" as part of their inventory. http://www.lifeinvad...k_cache_n_carry (http://www.lifeinvader.com/profile/warstock_cache_n_carry)
Can you drive a train? Yes, you can also climb aboard it for a free ride around LS and the country side! (I climbed onto one of its empty carts, and walked around on it RDR style.)
If you crash a plane wing into a building does it break off? So far I've only flown one plane, it was a private jet that I stole from the airport in LS. I crashed into the ground lol. (My Y-axis wasn't inverted, I went down when I meant to go up.) The wings, cone, tail, and rudders all fell off as it exploded, parts went everywhere.
Is there basketball?
Can cop cars be modded?
Can police lights be toggled without sirens?
Silencer for Pistols? Yes.
Are there stealth attacks?Yes, (One example: I equipped a knife, and crouch walked up to the back side of a hooker, I was given a prompt for a stealth attack. Trevor stood up, and stabbed her in the neck.)
Can you toggle your seatbelt?
Can you park vehicles in the garage any way you like?
Is there snow in the mountains?
Can you smoke pot outside of the house?
Can you do BMX tricks?
Are tow trucks operational?
How is the concentration of peds? Varied, the country is sparse, as it would be, and the inner city is bustling with activity, the city really does feel "alive." If you don't have a wanted level, (Wanted levels cause there to be less NPCS around.) head to Vespuci beach, you'll see hundreds of NPCs on the beach. (Okay, maybe not hundreds but it's certainly congested)
Are cops strict on laws of the road?
Have you seen police arresting random NPCs? Yes, I had a gang member punch me in front of a cop to test this, he jumped out and arrested the gang member, and put him into the back of his squad, he then drove off with him in the back.
Is the camera centered for driving?

You saying that forced me to search for some. I'm looking forward to using the money I've been saving for something important on this game.

I have only now gained really much hype for this game. I have replayed the entire GTA IV trilogy, RDR + Undead Nightmare AND L.A. NOIRE +DLC during the past one and a half weeks. Judging by the aging of their games and how much content GTA V appears to have, I can only suspect that I'll play this game for a long time after I get it. However, that's too far for me.

What do I do now? How do I kill time?

I'm franticly rushing to finish Assassins Creed 3 before V gets delivered and marathoning Breaking Bad because Netflix offered me another free 30 days.

Expect reviews at 3PM (UK time) tomorrow.

Really? How come? I'm on my free trial at the moment. I don't need to marathon Breaking Bad because I'm up to date with it, but I've been watching quite a few other shows on it too.

I read they're using real gang members to do the voice acting this time round. I'm all for giving people a second chance, but celebrating something so evil in such a way, it's not conducive to anything good. They glorify gangs and drug dealing too much for my liking, and it sends out some really bad messages. How can you say crime doesn't pay when you're paying people for having been a gang member? I would feel very uncomfortable playing this game knowing what some of the people involved have done. It does looks like a lot of fun and well made apart from that and no doubt it will break a lot of sales records. I just hope Rockstar Games tries to balance things out a bit somehow.2013-09-16 11:17:00

Depends what kind of gangs they used,

Seriously though, from an artistic point of view, I totally understand why they would do such a thing. Rockstar is selling you a world with GTA games, they are their own little realistic universes, filled with unreal events to make it fun and thus a game. Given that, it makes complete sense to record authentic gangs rather than fabricating clich?d counterfeits.

However, whether this is morally just or not is up for debate. On one hand it is the questionable life-style and behaviour that got these gangsters the voice acting gig, on the other these people legitimately offered their time and service for a genuine and legal cause, and to not reward/pay them for that is almost as morally debatable.

Personally though, I think it's a non-issue, a 'choose your battles' kind of thing. Morals aside, I doubt Rockstar's decision will have any significant impact, for better or worse, beyond a slightly more realistic virtual environment.

Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate them wanting to make it authentic, I can understand the reasons for that, but I think it would have been a lot better if they had at least taken the precaution of hiring people who stated they were EX gang members and no longer involved in committing crimes. I agree it's good that they are earning money legally here, but if they're still involved in crime, then that money is likely to be used to directly fuel further crime unfortunately. And it comes across that Rockstar are perfectly happy for that to happen and they support that life style. I don't know how much of an impact these actions will have, it's impossible to measure, but I hope you're right.

I can't get it until the next time my family goes into town.. and if I can convince my parents to pay the extra $10 I don't have..

The stress of waiting is killing me even though it's only been out for almost 3 hours here.

EDIT: I'm reading articles about GTA V and I just read something about people being astonished about the violence in the game since there's a scene where the player (I'll just put it in a spoiler just in case somebody doesn't want to be spoiled about something they do in the game. It doesn't reveal any of the story though.)
pulls somebody's teeth out.
It really irritates me when people do this. It's a rated 18+ game. What makes it any different then a movie where they do even worse things and some of those movies are only rated 13+.

I just find this article not necessary.

The article also says a few other things the player does. Anyway, here is the link to the article: http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/staying-in/video-games/gta-5-torture-row-teachers-2278689

Yeah, people completely ignore the facts:
It is rated 18 for a reason. If a higher age could be given it probably would be. Parents should keep kids away from these games. Heck GTA V is the first game in the series I've got since 4 came out before I was 18.
Films are worse, I'm sure I have seen a 15 rated movie with something along the lines of that spoiler.
Other games are worse. Media seem to latch onto GTA because it simply sells more than the even more violent games.
And it is hardly a case of the player doing these actions, if anything it will be a button mashing quick time event.

Anyway, I've got it but I've got some other stuff to do today so I'll be on it later.

Not true unfortunately. The player is the one doing these actions and has to do so in order for the game to progress any further. Quite a few articles regarding it at the moment, it sounds really nasty and there's no reason for it to be in there. Looks like it's just there to grab headlines, easy advertising.

Worldwide sales of the latest entry in Rockstar's open-world crime series, Grand Theft Auto 5 (http://www.joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-5), have surpassed $800 million in just 24 hours. This figure represents a new day-one high for both the series and parent company Take Two Interactive.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/09/18/grand-theft-auto-5-makes-off-with-over-800-million-on-day-one/

Grand Theft Auto V has become the fastest selling videogame in UK history, it has been revealed.
Chart Track data shows GTA V sold a staggering 1.57m units during its first day on sale, breaking the previous record set by Activision?s Call of Duty: Black Ops, which managed a mere 1.41m when it launched in November 2010.
These sales figures mean Rockstar have generated upwards of ?65m in revenue on the ?170m game so far. The numbers also mean that in its opening 24 hours, GTA V made more money than the entirety of the boxed retail games market for the previous two months.

Take-Two Interactive announced today that based on internal estimates it believes Grand Theft Auto 5 sales have surpassed $1 billion during its first three days at retail. According to the company, the game is the fastest product to achieve that milestone.

If the estimates by the Rockstar Games' parent company are correct, it will have beaten the already ridiculous achievement by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year, which hit the billion milestone in 15 days (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/05/call-of-duty-black-ops-2-1-billion/).

Take-Two announced on Wednesday that Grand Theft Auto 5 had sales of $800 million in its first 24 hours (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/09/18/grand-theft-auto-5-makes-off-with-over-800-million-on-day-one/) (compared to CoD: Black Ops 2's $500 million (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/16/call-of-duty-black-ops-2-500-million-24-hours/)).

Also, we're just using Call of Duty here for comparative purposes. Don't you worry. Call of Duty: Ghosts (http://joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-ghosts) is still going to do plenty fine, with GameStop recently noting it as the "most pre-ordered" game of the year (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/09/09/call-of-duty-ghosts-tracking-to-be-most-pre-ordered-game-of-y/).
