Teh Official RIP thread

Archive: 11 posts

I'm actually quite annoyed that everytime a VIP dies a new RIP XY thread appears in General Chat.
I seriously feel that those threads are not respectful of common people that die everyday, that maybe were TRUE heroes for their families and the people close to them.

So what I ask is a unified thread for the dead VIPS, a "mass grave" to put them all there, all the thoughts, all the pics, all the sentences and not have their threads rotting here and there in General Chat.

nevermind, deleted what I had at first. I hadn't clearly read the OP well enough. Leave me alone! It's still early, hadn't had my breakfast yet.2011-10-24 13:00:00

Yup, they died, it's part of life, like being born.
So what's the reason why no one opens threads when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have the next son? It's a much more pleasant news actually.
I found that this desire of partecipating publically in a mourn for someone you don't know, and is not even friend of a friend is someway morbid.
It really sweeps away the real sadness of the passing away.
It's mystification of normal people and death made business.
Sad...

Absolutely beautiful idea. Never heard anyone think like this before. It is truly sad that only one person has thought of this. Really nice post m8. 2011-10-24 17:25:00

Great idea! May I suggest it say "Celebrity RIP" instead of VIP.
As you have stated the person whose family member or friend has died is a VIP to them.
Their passing is quite a bit more important (to them) then a famous person they never meet.

For those who are curious about celebritys who have died:

I don't agree with something you said. You said that making these "RIP" threads is disrespectful to the common man who's died. How? I'm supposed to look in the obituary section and make a thread for everyone who has died, famous or not? People make these threads because a famous or quasi famous person has passed away, and more people are aware of a famous person than dear Aunt Sally who passed away this morning. No offense to anyone's dear Aunt Sally, just an example. To some, this may be the first time hearing about this person's demise. That was the case with Dan Wheldon's death. I heard it here first. When a famous person passes, I'm not saying it's more sad, but this person touched more lives than if they'd been a regular joe working down at the bank. Shoot, got to take this crew to lunch, try to finish this thought later.2011-10-24 17:54:00

@Omega: while I understand your intentions, General Chat has long been the correct subforum for all sorts of "Talk about recently passed away person X" threads. Redirecting and closing all the other threads would just make more work for us mods, and in the name of what? To prevent the addition of more celebrity gossip?

I think your heart is in the right place... I'm just not sure that an RIP thread is the solution. And I certainly don't run the site, so maybe CC or some of the other mods might feel this is a good idea. Just my opinion. :S

I mean, more than often those are threads opened only for a couple of replies, active for less than a week, that, as I said, go into the void of what is forgotten very soon, because, sadly, VIPs mourn is just gossip that lasts just some days, just for the time of a mass celebration mourn.
Then, more often that not they generate flames.
Anyway...just a suggestion to give everyone their right place without being too intrusive.

So just like 99% of the other threads in General Chat?

If this idea is ever implemented, can we call this forum 'The Ditch'?2011-10-25 03:06:00
